Here you will find the remains of the walls of Castillo de San Cristóbal. Whats left is now located…read moreunderneath Plaza de España in Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, so there are a few steps to go down but a decent hand rail.
There is only about 30 minutes of a walk around the museum as there is only a few metres of the wall (castle) left. But there is plenty of information about the island's history and defence system. It is managed by the Council of Tenerife's Independent Board of Museums and Centres. Admission is free.
The biggest attraction of great interest to visitors is the legendary El Tigre cannon. Although not historically provable, legend has it that El Tigre was the cannon used to fire the shot that took off the arm of Admiral Horatio Nelson, killing one of his officers along with quite a few of the crew. El Tigre has lived on in the memory of the people of Tenerife, so how true that is i'll never know.
I have awarded 5 stars as this is the only piece of the castle left. (the rest was removed last century) and for the restoration of the cannon and the well laid out history of the defences. As I mentioned earlier this is only a 1/2 hour visit, and worth visiting if you are passing.
