I was intrigued by the synopsis because it mentioned taking place on 9/11, but the storyline goes well beyond that fateful day. The Mercy Seat. First, the theater: a small, intimate area with only 3 rows of seats. I've always enjoyed smaller theaters as you get ThisClose to the actors. Next, the play itself - clearly a unique display of two actors taking us on a roller coaster of emotions through their relationship. Having recently come out of a 6-year tie myself, I was able to relate to both characters and became submerged with the plot. At the end of the show, there is a small gathering area where the actors meet and talk with audience members. I shook hands with Aleks and listened intently how he explained to a small group of women how he mentally prepared for the character of Ben - stating several times how he was an a-hole and had to continuously remind himself of that. As I listened to him, I sensed that male-bashing bias that I've come to hear all too often. It's true that the character of Ben had been in a 3-year relationship with this woman while his wife and children are home. But the woman he is having an affair with is just as guilty. She made the conscientious decision to get involved with a married man who has children. She may be coming to the realization that she wants more, but Ben is not at fault for this. Furthermore, we hear Ben talk about his kids at several points throughout the storyline. So while his mistress (and boss) apparently fulfills certain destinations for Ben within the bedroom, he still loves his kids. I can relate to Ben. I was in a miserable marriage for years but didn't have the spine to leave them because I love my two boys. So from my perspective, Aleks doesn't give Ben enough credit. It takes two to tango, and Ben clearly has more to lose than his mistress. With that said, I would like to congratulate both Aleks and Ray-Anna Ranae on an absolutely brilliant performance. They are wonderful and thought provoking. Exceptional acting and directing. It's an up close and personal experience every time. I love the sets! We also love having several restaurants within walking distance where we can have dinner before the show. It makes for the perfect date night or night out with friends.

We went to this one because it was relatively close to all of us. It's a small venue. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, and the play was entertaining and funny. The cast were all great and they stayed in the hallway afterwards to personally thank each person who came. It was a great experience and I left really feeling like I had seen something special.

We've already seen "The Jungle Book Kids" and "101 Dalmations" at J*Company Youth Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in UTC. I was surprised at how professional these performances were! The kid-actors range in age from about 7 years old to 18 years old. They are surpisingly very talented in acting and singing! The stage decor and costumes were delightful as well. We got a group of 20+ to go together as "Family Day at the Theatre." All mommy's and daddy's enjoyed the performance but most importantly ALL OUR CHILDREN WERE ATTENTIVE AND EXCITED! Our children, ages infant to toddler, really enjoyed the performances ... imagine that! We plan on continuing to attend the plays in the 2008-2009 Season (and beyond) and maybe later...enroll our daughter in classes (beginning at age 4). The J*Company 2007-2008 15th Season included: High School Musical; The Jungle Book Kids; AIDA; and 101 Dalmations. Next season, 2008-2009 includes: Pocahontas; Into The Woods; and Fireflies. Plan ahead! I have one more hint ... each ticket is $16.50 (for anyone older that 2). However, if you get together ALL your friends and buy 20 tickets at one time ... the tix are ONLY $10.50 a piece! It's not just a "cute kids' dance class". This is real classical ballet, taught with care, depth, and European tradition. The founder, Eglė Špokaitė, was a principal ballerina with the Lithuanian National Ballet and has performed all over the world! Their head teachers, like Katia Anishchenko (trained at the Vaganova Academy and danced with the Mikhailovsky Theatre in Russia) and Tinatin Mtchedlidze (from the State Ballet of Georgia), bring incredible knowledge and professionalism to the classroom. You can truly feel that you're learning from people who've lived and breathed ballet their entire lives. What I really love is how genuine their recitals feel. They're not just about showing off! They're meaningful, artistic performances. The costumes are beautiful and varied, the choreography thoughtful, and every production feels like a complete story. Through these experiences, the students get to understand what real ballet is. Discipline, teamwork, grace, and artistic expression. Yes, BISD follows a traditional European style, which can feel more structured or strict compared to most American studios. But to me, that structure is what helps the students grow. This place is cash or check only so be prepared for that! I came and took an adult beginning ballet class and it was fine. I think it is slightly expensive and the member fee is high. I paid for a membership with Malashock and was under the impression that it covered all 3 resident companies at San Diego Dance Place. However, the Malashock membership apparently does not crossover to San Diego School of Ballet. I will probably come again after I try other different ballet studios in the area.
