They offer you some panna and a liquid chocolate to go with it that makes a different. The area around the gelateria is quite dead, but the gelateria itself is lovely and very organized. Until our trip to Emilia-Romagna, we had grown accustomed to thinking that Grom - opened in New…read moreYork several years ago - was an appropriate standard bearer. No more. In our two weeks traveling through northern Italy (sadly excluding Florence), we had an awful lot of gelato (and all better than Grom), but La Romana was arguably the best we came (well... more like stumbled) across. The peach granita in particular was chock full of small chunks of peach and huge fresh fruit flavor. Pistachio was probably among the very best I have ever had too.

I was searching for a gelato place in Ferrara. One of the other top places in Yelp is no longer…read morethere. We were getting a bit desperate and we find Grom a bit uninspiring so we stumbled on this place and if you're a chocolate lover especially as it relates to gelato, look no further! My son loves straciatella (chocolate chip) which strangely enough they don't have so the woman took their fior di latte and then went to their dark chocolate fountain and added a bunch of chocolate. I saw one that said coco which I thought meant cocoa powder and it turns out it means coconut. I generally hate coconut but it was actually really good! My impression is that the coconut was fresh or at least high quality. Also as a flourish they put the cones underneath the dark chocolate fountain which made them taste that more delicious. Also for you chocolate lovers out there some of the flavors of chocolate gelato were single origin (e.g., Peru) and had cocoa percentages (like 70%) A fabulous place for high quality gelato!!

Grom makes really really yummy gelato. I love arriving in a totally new (to me) city to find a Grom there ready to meet my gelato needs - it's much more efficient than trying every other gelateria in town hoping to stumble across an exceptional one. That doesn't mean I ignore the other places - I love getting a recommendation from a local for the finest little mom-and-pop gelato shop in town, too. There's room in my heart (and belly) for multiple gelato suppliers. Favorite flavors include dark chocolate (cioccolato fondente), salted carmel, and pistacchio. The fruit sorbets are delicious, too.
