It looks French from the outside, but really it has all sorts of food, from French to English to Mediterranean (having Turkish coffee and some Turkish-style meals). You order at the till like a pub, but pay at the end like a restaurant. It's usually fairly quiet, so it's a good place to get some work done (just ask for the WiFi password), and makes it the go-to place for a lunch meeting. The manager is friendly, welcoming and attentive. My only gripe is that they just take cash (at least last time I was there). ... But their prices are so low this shouldn't be a problem in most cases. ;)

But I have to say this was the sorriest example of a Harvester I have ever encountered. The staff were sullen and surly during my visit, and moved at a glacial pace. As we placed a drinks order I started to wish the ground would open up and swallow us whole each attempt on our part to be cheerful seemed to send the bar tender into an even worse misery. Then we come to the food. I only wanted a snack, but the two incredibly wizened potato skins which arrived were a charred blob not remotely loaded with the promised cheese and bacon. These disgraceful specimens were arranged on a bed of what looked like an entire shredded lettuce, simply drawing extra attention to their pathetic state. They were not worth the menu price at all, so I sent them back to the kitchen (something I have NEVER done before), and recieved my refund with a smash of coins onto the table and a not-quite apology. I grudgingly give this place one star, purely for the burger and fries eaten by my companion, who assured me they were delicious.

On a wonderfully not-foggy night drive up to York, I had the pleasure of needing to spend the penny (was that right?), so I exited into the first service stop I saw. I thought it would be a duff, scattered bunch of gas stations and fast food places, but it was actually one of those huge service centers that likens to a food court of a mall. I took a quick gander around. Why would I get Subway or Burger King when I could get fish and chips or a pie from this Harry Ramsden's just as quick? Dog's bollocks indeed. Since I had just eaten some fish and chips the night before--of course--I decided to go with the steak and ale pie! I haven't had that yet, so I figured now would be a cracking time to do it. After waiting in the tiny queue, I was gobsmacked when the cashier told me that they were out of my steak pie (how is that even possible at a fast food chain?). I didn't fancy waiting 20 minutes for one to be made, so I got the next best thing, a chicken pie! For less than 10 pounds, the pies come with a side of chips and mushy peas! Crikey! Mushy peas! Not exactly my cup of tea, but they sure were quite mushy. I thought the chicken pie was blinding! It definitely wasn't like the ones you find in the freezer section of your local supermarket. Super savory and with wonderfully contrasting textures in each bite. Perfect for warming up the soul from the biting winter weather outside. The portion size was just right, and my only complaint was that the outside crust was a bit burnt. I wish there were some Harry Ramsden's in the States--it could replace one of those rubbish burger joints. Next time I happen upon one of these in the UK, I'd probably want to try their "World Famous" fish and chips. Cheerio!

It was really hard to chose a meal, as everything was so appetising! Most of us ordered a starter and a main - the portions were super generous, so by the end of the meal not only we couldn't fit a dessert, but were hardly able to stand up to leave!! Each dish was delicious - we ensured that we tried a few between us. I can't vouch on authenticity, but the taste is definitely there! Service was super friendly!!

It tasted more like a velvety citrus-y mayo than the tart, cooling tzatzikis I've had before. The chicken gyro was as big as my head. Comes with chips inside the gyro.
