Back in those days it was called the Prince of Wales but other than that not much has changed. It's a nice if slightly small place. It seems to have suffered in recent years following the opening of the North Wales Theatre five miles down the coast in Llandudno but still attracts the odd name or half decent play. It also now doubles as a cinema to keep the money coming in. Hopefully Theatr Colwyn will be around for years to come.

I also played here when I was at school. picture this; there are seconds to go before the curtains…read morego back, the 'technician' drops the mike on your leg. you raise the ball of your foot to lift your knee and stop the mike falling on the floor. the curtains come back you start to play, with the mike kind of ballanced on your knee. and your leg starts to shake due to nerves. this is amplified terribly but you carry on and finish the song because you are to nervouse to sort it out and start again. man i was a bad performer. but i was young darn it. um anyway, this is a medium sized venue. they also show films in addition to the shows and pantos. a good community vibe. am dram i believe too. go and catch a show. support the theatre. popcorn available.

This was the best Saturday night alone in a strange town I've had in a long time. The movie wasn't…read moreone I had been interested in (Stuber), but the theatre looked so fun I thought, "Why not?" It certainly beat staying in my hotel room. I got there a little early and ordered a glass of wine at the bar, which also has beer, whiskey, and the like. They have popcorn available in both sweet and salty (or mixed, if you're like me). There were some locals there having a drink as well, and it was great! The theatre is all painted in murals, with fun old-fashioned seats and a very good visual and sound systems -- super up-to-date -- and I was able to take my wine and popcorn with me into the theatre to enjoy during the movie. They even have a couch, if you prefer to lounge. Everything was clean and well-taken-care-of, and the prices were amazing. Entry was only £5 (£6 for the balcony). I come from the US, where popcorn is $8, so being able to get a nice glass of wine and a good-sized box of popcorn for £7 was great. All in all, this is a fun night out in an unexpected and quirky place, and I'd even suggest it for families, as it's inexpensive enough to take everyone, and super fun.

Actually I say the middle of nowhere, that's just what it felt like during the 20 minute drive in the dark - it's actually on the edge of Ellesmere Port, but that's hardly a hub of civilisation in itself. It's the typical retail park scenario, you know the kind of thing - windy roads, lots of roundabouts, a steady breeze sweeping the tumbleweeds past as you're dazzled by the neon glow from Burger King, Nandos, Pizza Hut, Frankie & Benny's, Bella Italia, and the other usual suspects. The cinema experience itself was just like any other Vue, I just hate this universal trend towards corporate blandness that insists on building these huge conglomerate retail parks in the middle of nowhere.

It's annoying to get to without a car as the buses can be quite bad and sometimes don't show up at all. If you can get there then it is a far better venue than any cinema nearer to the city. With a large number of screens there are a lot of films on offer at any one time. In fact last time we visited, my wife ended up watching a different film to me, and this worked out great with only a 20 minute wait for one of us. The food is obviously a massive rip off, but that is true of every cinema these days. Luckily the rest of the retail park offers a range of restaurants to suit al tastes so it is worth eating before or after the film rather than spending a similar amount on a drink and some ice cream.

They only allow you to consume food purchased at the cinema and it's severely over priced. 2 drinks, 2 bags of sweets cost me the same as two adult tickets.

Nice comfy seats in the main screen, the second screen has the older style seats, for me that adds to the ambience. Films change on Friday, I usually go mid week and the cinema is never crowded. Ticket prices are reasonable, I wouldn't say the refreshments are expensive I got popcorn, sweets and a soft drink for about £3 which I don't think is too bad. I'd like a bigger selection of chocolates to choose from though.

And the Dukes has a fine program of arthouse and independent film that just isn't available anywhere else locally. However they do show popular films and have great Sing a Long nights where they show the Sound of Music etc. This cinema isn't about how much popcorn and coke you can ram down your face, it is about watching good films amongst likeminded people. Add to that the fact you can get a drink from the bar and take it in with you and what more could you want. Support this place and other local businesses. The Dukes is one of the things that makes Lancaster a decent place to live in
