Dating from 988, and set on a natural bend in the river, Bouillon Castle dominates the small town of Bouillon in Wallonia, southern Belgium.
It was from here that the unlikley combination of Godfroi de Bouillon, his mother and Peter the Hermit set out on the first crusade in the late 1090s.
The castle is surprising large - you think you've seen most of it but it just keeps going on and on - with great views of the town below. It is great to explore for adults and little ones alike.
If you still have any energy, Bouillon is set in a natural amphitheater and there is a great walk up the hill by the river to a viewing point above the town. read more
