We stayed in town for a little over a week and used up our first few days on different excursions. We found what we really wanted on our last few days was to relax and take in Juneau. With salmon jumping about, it only made sense to find some fishing gear and relax and go fishing. We drove up to the location to find it empty and were a little disheartened that maybe they were out doing an excursion themselves. We called and left a message and Paul called us back 2 mins later. My party of three had a great time thanks to Chum Fun! Guides Jay and Josh took us to a great spot, and my brother-in-law caught a 12-lb chum salmon. They then took us to the pier by the hatchery where I (fish story alert) almost landed a huge fish that got away when it swam under the pier and snapped my 30-lb test line. The owners Paul and Michelle are extremely friendly, and their knowledgeable guides make sure everyone in the party has a chance to land a salmon. Came here on a whim after seeing people fishing from the pier next to the Hatchery. We rented a pole and went fishing. Great was good quality and had no issues. They showed us what and where to fish and since the Chum was running it was easy Pickens. We caught about 8-10 fish and had a blast fishing. This is a must do if you have the time. Hosts Paul and Michelle are fantastic people, really hard-working folks who are very hospitable and set you up well for fishing and cover every detail on how to cast and set the hook from a private floating dock. Unfortunately, June 9 in 2023 was apparently too early for salmon to start migrating this season and no one in our party of about 9 got even a bite. So go later in the season. Salmon migration timing depends on many factors and with so many locals also fishing from shore with no luck either, it's likely the runs could have started any day. Paul and his wife were AMAZING!!! A FUN, reasonably-priced and all around great fishing excursion in Juneau. They accommodated everyone in our party with rods, jackets (we didn't need them), shoes--everything. We even got to stop at the hatchery on our way to the fishing shore. Totally different than going on a charter boat where you have to share rods and they cast for you. We got to do everything ourselves and actually had to take a break because our arms got tired from all the fish! Please note that if the cruise tells you they are full, they aren't--they can accommodate as many people that want to go. Princess Cruise had them capped at 8 people and our group was 16. For what you're paying you're being ripped off. They pick people up and drive them down to a public dock where they can see fish but the likelihood that you will catch something legally is slim. Save yourself a ton of money and catch a ride to the hatchery because that's where they're taking you. There a guy that rents fishing poles for cheap so that will save you 75% of the cost. read more

I wish I could give them zero stars. We booked Chum Fun for salmon fishing while in Juneau on an Alaskan cruise. It was the worst day. We didn't catch anything. One of the "guides" brought his dog. He was throwing a stick in the water for the dog to retreive right where we were fishing. The dog actually got tangled in my line. We asked about moving locations and were told it wasn't possible. We were fishing off their private pier behind their office, so we weren't able to move around to other areas. Another employee showed up with the owner and started killing crabs on the pier for their dinner. We were chatting with him before leaving and lamenting that we didn't catch a single salmon when he said, "well, we didn't think you would. It's the wrong time time of the year. Come back in a few months." What?? Why did you offer an excursion for salmon fishing if it's the wrong time. Biggest waste of money and time for our entire trip. read more

Last year my wife and I decided to go with Chum Fun Charters for some fishing. We were supposed to visit a fish hatchery as part of the tour and then go to a good place to fish. They did not take us to the fish hatchery, as advertised, and we wnded up fishing on a dock just behind their office. We fishes for almost three hours with six other people. None of us got a bit in three hours. They did not offer to take us to another place where we might find fish. It was a complete waste of time! It appears from reviews a few years back that people were catching fish. But it appears that many of these people were fishing in other places, not on the dock behind their office. read more

We came to Juneau for the first time with very little knowledge about where to fish and it's fishing regulations. I also didn't have a lot of money for fancy boat charters so I decided to book the affordable tour with Chum Fun. We went with another company the day before and was very disappointed with the experience. I couldn't leave AK without getting a good fishing experience for Kings, even is we were at the end of the season. Charlie (the wonder dog) joined us, we went to a locals spot for fishing, had a great day out. If you want to experience fishing like/with a local, you should use these guys. Family business, great equipment. You meet at the downtown office and head out from there. All experience levels handled (I had hardly any experience, hubby had plenty). We visited Juneau last week and used Chum Fun Charters to fish and we are so glad we did. This is a small family owned company that treats you like you are family. Paul and Michelle are amazing people. They make sure that your fishing experience is catered to you and that you will catch fish. The day started with a tour of the salmon hatchery which was really interesting. Paul has an extensive amount of knowledge about fishing and was able to answer all of the questions we had. We then moved on to fishing. We spent time practicing casting and he was there to make sure that we were all set up and ready to fish. Our fishing experience was top notch. Had an amazing time with ChumFun! Family owned/run and perfect for those who have a few hours to do some fishing without having to jump on a boat/float plane and burn a day/ton's of cash! Located maybe 5 minutes from downtown Juneau and they come and pick you up right at the docs or even possibly hotel as they did for us! Your fishing within 10 minutes and they supply everything from rod/reel/tackle and even rain gear. They worked with our children to get them up to speed and had them casting like pro's in no time. We hit a couple spots and caught Salmon/bottom fish at both places. A hatchery tour comes with the experience and is very impressive/informative---super cool! Afterwards they cleaned/prepped the fish (eagles took care of the scraps as they're all over the property!) and sent it to a packing house to be shipped home to us when we get back. Tons of fun! Paul and McKinley were great and patient with our two girls 6 and 10 who had never fished before. Everyone caught fish and had an incredible time. Paul warned us ahead of time that this particular time of year the a lot of the fish weren't great eating so it was mostly catch and release but we did get two that were good enough for smoking. Even the hatchery tour was great as they were enthusiastic tour guides who seemed to be authentically enthusiastic about everything we saw. Highlight of the trip so far! read more

My wife and I fished from the shore. This excursion was called "Shoreline Fishing". We fished last Tuesday, September 3rd. I was quite disappointed! There were three couples and one single guy. The owner, Paul, his wife, and assistant were very friendly. After providing us with poles, tips, and fishing apparel none of us caught any fish or got a bite. This includes Paul and his assistant who also fished. We fished on one side of the river and on the other side during the last half hour. I know that no one can guarantee that you will catch fish, but I think something else should have been done to enable us to catch fish. We were depending on the expertise of the guides.For example take us to another lake or location early on. Possibly, try some live bait or provide a way for us to purchase fish. I enjoyed the fishing, but too much money was spent for the excursion and a license to end up with nothing or not even a bite. On the other hand, it was a diappointing and discouraging fishing experience! Maybe I expected too much, I don't know! So, I'm not blaming anybody for what happened. I found Chum Fun to be a great (and simple!) alternative to the expensive charter boats. Paul, Michelle, and JP were engaging and friendly, and made me feel welcome and at home. Fishing from shore is a nice option for people (such as me) who have little interest in trolling for salmon (boring!) but still want to fish when they visit Juneau (just a personal preference--there's nothing wrong with trolling for salmon--I've done it before, and in my opinion it's fun but not as fun as shore fishing). I find the simplicity of shore fishing to be relaxing and peaceful in a way that boat fishing just can't provide, and a much better way to get up close and personal with the landscape and feel in touch with the essence of Alaska and its fish. Paul and JP know where the fish are and provide all the necessary instruction for catching them, and their equipment (spinning gear) is great quality and in excellent condition. They also match their guidance to your level of fishing experience, whether it be rank beginner or highly experienced; in my case, I've been a fishing fanatic for over 50 years and have extensive experience in almost every type of fishing and every type of equipment in use, so for me fishing alongside JP and Paul was like being with old fishing buddies who were showing me their favorite fishing hole. It was well worth it for me, and I plan on going with them again the next time I visit Juneau. read more
