St John's Lutheran Church, LCMS - The octagonal church, designed by Alden Dow in his "Michigan Modern" style, is striking.

I have not visited St. John's in person, but I have communicated a number of times with its senior…read morepastor, Pastor Kempin, and he is a very considerate person who clearly cares greatly for his congregation--and even random people who contact him via the Internet! Pastor Kempin is very well versed in both Scripture and the understanding of it as found in the Lutheran Confessions. He is a blessing to all who encounter him. Oh, and yes, if you're into architecture, this is not your average church, and it is rather striking, both inside and out, having been designed by Michigan Modern architect Alden Dow. The building is octagonal in shape, with the altar (and the pastor) located at the center.

I am writing in regards to my experience with St. John's school…read more Preschool and kindergarten were awesome. The kids did really well, as a parent I felt very involved and accepted. Not to mention the preschool and kindergarten teachers were very caring and genuine people. So I assumed this would carry on into first grade. Not the case. I don't attend church regularly so I did anticipate a frosty reception initially. When that didn't happen in the younger classes I naively presumed everyone else would be just as friendly and warm. For the first two weeks of school I would walk my child into class and the teacher would turn her back or walk away. No acknowledgment or opportunity to introduce myself. Very awkward. In the beginning, I would get math and spelling papers returned to follow my childs progress but that even stopped. I know for certain that from spring break in march to the end of the year I did not recieve a single one of my child's papers back. Odd to me when they had a spelling test every friday and we worked on spelling words 6 nights a week. I would have loved to know how my child still only got a "c" in spelling when we knew those words inside and out. I tried communicating via classroom app and a paper to send notes to the teacher in her class folder asking about not receiving any graded papers in a long while. No response. We have spent this summer preparing for public school by going to sylvan learning center to try and get caught up. $$$$$ not cheap but an excellent place. Just seems like a school that appears to be in need of better enrollment would make an effort to communicate to new parents. Especially parents that may not have had much religion in their lives but wanted that for their children.
