On Friday, July 18, my son, Service dog, and myself came to the church to attend the services of my…read morefriend of 50 years, Mr. Edward Hood.   Upon entry to the church, a Deacon told me that they don't allow dogs in the sanctuary. I told him that she was my service animal and then I showed him credentials and then he allowed me to enter.   I took a seat in the sanctuary, and shortly after you, Rev. Owen's, interrupted the service to out me in front of the whole congregation, all of my fellow Saints, friends and the family of Mr. Hood.   Saying "The lady with the dog, you have to leave, we do not allow dogs in our sanctuary".   I was told to leave the sanctuary and go sit in the hallway.   In my 66 years of life, this was the most embarrassing, humiliating hurtful and discriminative act of my life, and for it to happen in Church, the house of the Lord, a place of love.   I hold my head down in shame for the ignorance of people who don't try to understand one another and their disabilities or life 's challenges.   Rev. Owens, trusting those who are on duty, your deacons and ushers that were at the entrance of the sanctuary, this never would have happened.   This absolutely could have been handled with decency and respect by asking your deacon or usher to confront me in private.   This episode has caused me a tremendous set back with my mental and physical health.   And a suggestion to you, moving forward being a man of God, approach situations diplomatically with love all disabilities are not visible.  Trust who you have put in charge at the door.   My service dog Zena has been trained, well-groomed and cleaner than some people.  I have invested in her so she can help me during times like Friday, July 18.   My thoughts and prayers will be with you to become more compassionate in situations like this.

I recommend disregarding the older negative reviews and giving this church a chance. I think you'll really love it.

UPDATE I am still as…read morein love with FOL as always. This review is for the fellas. Are you a fan of Fantasy Football? Do you listen to ESPN Fantasty Football Podcast? The 06010? If you know what I'm talking about this season (2012 season) you may have heard mention of "the official pastor of the 06010". This pastor who plays fantasy football and uses terms like "whoa crazy crazy" in his sermons and you may have asked yourself...I wonder where that church is. Well you found it! Its FOL! We are a vibrant and lively community that love Jesus, Love the community, and love fantasy football. We have a simple vision at this church to be called, trained, and sent into our neighborhoods to show people Christs love. However we also believe this should not be done alone but in a community and as such, we also have a high value for deep relationships and friendships. The guys often play poker together, fantasy football, etc. The women have hang outs, potlucks, etc. Then we all do stuff together as well. It allows neighbors, friends, and new people to check us out in a safe non-threatening way. If you are at all interested after reading this, please check us out. We meet at Stevens middle school on Santa Fe in Long Beach at 10am. Just ask for Franky, and I'll come say hello!

The praise and worship is beautiful and non- performative like when the ex wife was leading it. In fact, when she was there she made a comment that just turned me off completely. She had been invited to an award show to sing and so she asked the congregation to pray for her because " this ain't like Sunday morning this is the REAL DEAL right here!" What??? Here I am thinking that Sunday morning is the REAL deal. If YOU'RE real! Like I said, the atmosphere is different. I have been attending and I enjoy it.

It's Sunday, so why not write a review about a church?…read more My good friend invited me here because the play he wrote was going to be featured here as a part of Black History month. At the last minute he asked me to close the production by singing a song. The play deals with the issues of HIV/AIDS in minority communities and the church's response to people dealing with the disease. Get ready here comes the sermon part of this review.... There is a new HIV infection occurring somewhere in the world every 6 seconds...can you imagine that? African-Americans account for 50% of the new HIV infections Black and Latino women are one of the fastest growing populations of newly diagnosed HIV infections. Young adults between the ages of 13-25 are the second largest age group of new HIV infections. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now, but get tested...OK? So the event took place in the parish hall, and boy did it bring back memories for me. The checkered and speckled linoleum floor, metal folding chairs and tables, large coffee pots and styrofoam cups, and the big kitchen that was staffed with the older church women. Women in the church kitchen always looked happy to me, don't know why that is. Maybe they're happy to be doing something for others. Anyhow, all the church folk were standing around, chatting, sipping coffee and some were standing in line for food. Another person in the play who was sitting next to me was taking in the scene and said "People will come to church for the food and for the love." The people at St. Luke's certainly made us feel welcome, there was a lot of love. The fried chicken lunch and complimentary Red Rooster hot sauce wasn't so bad either.
