**Scott is the BRILLIANT STUDENT WHISPERER!!** We first sought his services years ago, when my son…read moreneeded to improve his scores for admissions applications to independent high schools. Fortunately, my son is quite bright--but he suffers from ADHD and lack of self confidence. Scott immediately bonded with him--he's pretty amazing in his talent for putting kids at ease and finding their strengths--and he set up a super effective study and skills-building test prep schedule for my son. Scott also gave him super smart inside knowledge on how to pace himself, with strategies for both answering multiple choice questions as well as managing testing time constraints. My son improved his scores by 50%!! And my son thinks of Scott as a true friend and mentor, as well--trusting his judgment and sage advice completely. Fast forward, my son is now applying for colleges and that lack of self-confidence has returned. On top of that, he's super stressed out and depressed about the whole process and his ability to get into the colleges he'd aspired to get into, even though his grades and test scores should admit him into some pretty good schools. Again, Scott to the rescue. He helped my son really think deeply and analyze what he wanted out of a college and his future. And Scott knows SOOOOO much about *all* the different colleges and their academic environments, teaching atmospheres, stress levels, and the kinds of students who might succeed there--he is able to give great advice about what might be the best fit for someone, based on their personality and abilities. Scott was able to get my son to step outside of himself and his insecurities, and come up with a plan for his future that he feels confident about pursuing--most of all, a college plan with options that my son truly believes will make him happy. We can't say enough wonderful things about Scott except that we feel blessed and lucky to have him in our lives. THANK YOU, SCOTT!!

The impact Scott had on my son went well beyond college essay preparation/production. Pre-Scott, my son could barely write a coherent sentence and through the magic of Scott's teaching methodology and in a relatively short timeframe, the improvement was dramatic. The counsel, candid discussions, and direction Scott provided paid huge dividends in the classroom and in daily written communication (emails, texts). My son became a more confident writer and student which of course, carried over to everyday life. As he heads-off to college in the fall (UCLA), I'm forever grateful to Scott for the life-changing role he played in preparing my son for the next chapter and beyond.

We did a proctored practice SSAT test with this outfit. The results were depressing, until we…read morerealized that they completely mis-scored the tests. You can imagine the initial parental panic when our kids landed in the 4th percentile. We have twins, and they both brought back the tests, which were different, even though the answer keys were the same. Spot checking the correct answers showed that they totally messed up. Plus, their scoring method is suspect. In the real SSAT, you lose 1/4 point for a wrong answer, and get 0 points for leaving it blank. In their test, it's 0 points no matter what. I have no idea about the quality of their tutoring, but given that a monkey would have scored as well as our kids, anyone's real SSAT scores are bound to go up. UPDATE: We got corrected scores the next day from NW. And according to them, apparently they do take into account blank answers in the overall score, even though it's not reflected in the reporting details. Hopefully they will have cleaned up their process.

Absolutely perfect!…read more We had an amazing experience with Nurturing Wisdom in general and with the incredible tutor, Megan, in particular. Despite a bad SAT score when she started, my daughter was able to get her ideal score at the end, even more than what was expected in the initial contract. Megan is very professional and at the same time dedicated, patient and kind. I was afraid two hours of SAT tutoring in the evening would be too much but my daughter never complained and always felt she learned something from each session. I highly recommend Nurturing Wisdom. They are all very kind and dedicated. The price is totally worth it.

Kids are under so much pressure these days compared to when I was in school. Granted that was a…read morelong time ago but it is true. My daughter is in the sixth grade and pretty much a straight A student, except for math. She began slipping behind this past semester and was getting a C in math. This stressed her out far more than me however I convinced her and myself that we could tackle this together. That was until I learned the hard way that this common core BS it literally the most confusing math I have ever encountered. We gave it a week of me trying to teach myself and then her. And then another week of me getting absolutely frustrated. And then by the end of the second week I threw in the towel and started searching for tutors. Initially I was set on getting her a private tutor like I had done for my son 8 years prior. To my surprise and horror? Private tutors were running upward of $140 for an hour of in home tutoring. Ok. They make more than I do. I then decided that was insane and I switched gears settling on Sylvan at West Portal. The start up was pain free, she had her assessment and then headed full steam ahead with the small group math tutoring 2 days per week. There was only 2 months of school left, she had a C- in math going into it and finished the semester with a solid B. The best part of all was the confidence boost she got along with that B. The staff at Sylvan were friendly, easy to communicate with and never tried to push packages on us that we didn't need. Her assessment was so helpful in that it picked up area's where she needed help that she didn't know she even needed help in. The prices were very competitive and although I was hoping to get her the 1:1 tutoring I was limited by the cost and reassured that she would likely do just as well with the small groups. They were correct. There was not a single tutor that Lily did not click with. They were all patient and kind providing updates along the way with her progress. It was all around a great experience and she will definitely return for the math homework group in the Fall. I would recommend Sylvan to anyone who's child is falling behind in a subject and needs a boost. The money spent was well worth it and my girl went into the summer feeling great about herself and her grades.

I thought I paid for one-hour lesson, but the teachers end the lesson 15 minutes earlier than the lesson schedule. The 15 minutes time period is the waiting time for students to get picked up. Sylvan also forfeit your lesson if you missed a lesson. that means they will charge you for the lesson your kid didn't attend. we as parents, already are stressed so much for our daily expenses, but when our kids need help on their homework and school assignments, we send our kids to tutoring. One of my younger kid's parent persuaded me to enroll my kid in Sylvan because she could get some referral lessons once I enrolled. We got the 500 hours package because the price is a bit less than regular price. There are regularly 2-4 kids per 45 minutes lesson. My kid don't get much actual help in one lesson because she needs to share lesson time with other kids. We still have some purchased lessons. I won't renew after all purchased lessons are used for sure and definitely won't refer any of my friends to Sylvan. Sylvan entices students for a prize or gift to ask their parents to write good reviews on the internet.
