I was curious to see how Chinese cuisine would fare in Newcastle, compared to other cities and Chinois is a solid performer. Not without flaws though, considering the location and the apparent popularity for business dinners, I thought they let themselves down a little.
I visited for a work lunch, mid week, and while there were 3-4 big tables dining, I really did think they seemed understaffed to cope. The food was really very slow coming out, and the first entree was well finished by the time the last one arrived...inexplicable 20 minutes to make longer to cook San Choy Bow than a mixed entree plate!?
The mains too were staggered, although this was welcomed as the 6 mains overwhelmed our table. But to get water or more drinks was a real chore.
On the plus side, the food was good, with some dishes being as good as any other Chinese restaurant I've tried. In particular, the Black Peppered Beef and Malaysian Curry dishes were fantastic. As was the Satay chicken, although I felt the soft shell crab was a let down.
Chinois may not be the most authentic chinese restaurant and certainly cater to westernised chinese tastebuds.. but they do it well. Just don't expect a smooth ride. read more
