Ornate gate that marks the entrance to Portland's historic Old Town Chinatown
Dedicated: November 8, 1986
Designed by: architect Yu Tang Wang and artist Sun Chau.
The gate was fabricated in Taiwan, shipped to Portland, and assembled on site in about a week. It's about 38 feet high and 52 feet wide. Two bronze guardian lions flank the entrance, representing yin and yang.
The gateway contains elaborate dragons and other mythical figures; the front inscription says "Portland Chinatown," while the reverse carries "Four Seas, One Family."
While the gate itself is beautiful, the area leaves a lot to be desired. Rundown and dilapidated buildings and structures dot the area. It is said the area suffered widespread permanent closures during the COVID-19 pandemic and became a central hub for Portland's houseless population. Hopefully revitalization will happen at some point. read more
