When you just need some good good. Hot and fresh China Gourmet in Oak Ridge is my to-go go-to spot after a long day at work. They have the fried comfort foods and also lots of steamed veggies and meats. I get sauce on the side for low sodium option. Have you tried dipping an egg roll in spicy mustard and duck sauce? This is mmm so good to me. Wonder if anyone else likes this combo. A few of our favorites for a week night dinner: sweet and sour chicken, Szechwan chicken (sauce on the side), orange chicken, fried egg rolls, egg drop and wonton soup (not pictured), Kung Pau chicken (not pictured). I've been eating food from here for a couple of years now and have always been impressed with the quality and quantity of the meals here. It's been takeout only for a while since the pandemic but last week I found out the dining room is open and full service has been restored. We went in for dinner tonight and was not disappointed. We had crab rangoon and spring rolls for an appetizer. Both were very good. Karen had tofu and veggies and I had broccoli in garlic sauce, extra spicy. I thought the spice was not as strong as I like but it was still good. One thing I like about this restaurant is they offer brown rice. Some area Chinese restaurants say they have brown rice but end up bringing you fried rice. I am so disappointed to write this review. Everyone has been talking about this place, and I was very excited to try it. I was ready to love it! Unfortunately, it was terrible. Terrible. My husband said it was the worst Chinese food in the Greensboro area, and I have to agree with him. I ordered hot and spicy chicken, orange beef, and crab Rangoon. I ordered the chicken extra spicy. It didn't taste like anything. There was no garlic, no flavor, and no spice. It didn't taste like Chinese food. The orange beef was soggy and blah. The crab Rangoon was greasy and tasteless. All of it was bland. It was so bad that I just threw 28 dollars worth of food in the garbage. We each ate one crab Rangoon and a few bites of our entrees before we put the lids on the containers and threw it all away. Now we are trying to figure out what we will eat for dinner. Ok food. I ordered the bourbon chicken . It was just ok and rather dry for bourbon chicken. I was expecting more. The restaurant is nice on the inside. The prices are average. I probably wouldn't come here again. Only way I would go is to try something different and hope it is better. I think they just added some generic sweet sauce on the chicken. I really wanted to like this place as it was recommended to us from the people whose home we bought. We just moved to the area from Greensboro and we're looking for our new favorite Chinese place. It's definitely not this one. Let me start by saying the service was friendly and prices reasonable. We got take out so I'm not sure of the restaurant. I got the wonton egg drop soup with had no flavor, steamed dumplings which also had no flavor ( my husband said, "well these leave A LOT to be desired") and almond chicken which looked and tasted like it was cooked yesterday and reheated. China Gourmet has the benefit of being the only Chinese food in the immediate area, so I stop here when I don't feel like driving far sometimes. A chicken with garlic sauce combination dish and crab rangoons are my staples at any Westernized Chinese place. China Gourmet's rendition of the chicken with garlic sauce features a skimpy portion of chicken, tons of vegetables, and a sweeter and waterier type of sauce that I personally don't prefer to the thicker, richer type of sauce. The crab rangoons don't have much of the filling, which is the part that tastes good. And the egg rolls are pretty dry. It'll satisfy a Chinese food craving, but if distance wasn't a factor, I'd almost certainly choose somewhere else for Westernized Chinese. read more

So I love a good sit down chinese restaurant. They have expanded this restaurant to have a great sit down area and a yummy upgraded menu as well. Super kids menu( I posted a picture of the $5 sesame chicken kids meal) I enjoyed the seafood delight with sauce on the side. China Gourmet's Chef Gerry is originally from Fujian province, which is right on the straits of Taiwan. He came here 20 years ago with his parents and has recently redone the entire restaurant. Chef Gerry is also the owner and speaks perfect English. He is very likeable so I will be coming back. We tried the Spring Egg Rolls, slow braised bone-in Spare Ribs, Hot & Sour Soup, Jasmine tea, Combination Fried rice, Mongolian Beef with shredded green peppers, onions, & scallions in a spicy traditional brown sauce, and pork Egg Foo Young (the sauce for this is served on the side which is just as well as it was watery with a very peculiar unpleasant flavor.) I ended up eating the Foo Young with hot sauce and Soy sauce. (The Foo Young is battered and then deep crisp fried.) The Mongolian Beef was a bit sweeter and not very spicy than I am used to and did not include the crispy pan friend cellophane noodles. Soup was good as were the Egg Rolls. The Spare Ribs were tasty but a little dry perhaps a little too well done. The fried rice was good. There were many kid items on the children's menu making this a good choice for bringing your children. On Thursday, apparently it is 10% off (the special!) I ask Gerry if he takes requests for authentic cuisine and he said he needs two-day notice. By the way, their Hunan Sauce is a spicy brown sauce with ginger and black beans. I see this happening to some garlicky beef in the near future. Their menu is large so I think it make take a well to see what they do best. The menu is tailored to NC tastes so to get more authentic one has to know something about the menu. Our server was only 17 but has obviously had the food and knows a lot about the menu and how things are prepared so get ready to ask questions to avoid bland or dull tastes. read more

China Gourmet has delicious food with comparable pricing of other area Chinese fast food. One menu item that is spot on (where many others lack) are their fried wontons. Yummo!!!! The only downside, and the reason for a 4 rating vs. 5, is the wait time. Even when I call ahead (and drive 15 minutes to get there), I am always having to wait another good 15 minutes. The upside to that could be that its fresh and made to order, thus may be the reasoning for such a long wait. Delicious food nonetheless. Placed a to go order and it was ready when I arrived. My friend ordered Beef and Broccoli Combo and I ordered Chicken with Garlic Sauce. We also got an order of steamed dumplings. The food was good quality but lacked real seasoning. I could barely taste the garlic in mine, my friend had to add soy sauce to his. If you're looking for Chinese food in Oak Ridge keep driving. You would be better off buying frozen Chinese from Lowes, heating it up halfway, sitting it on the counter for 10 min and then eating it. They said it would be 20 minutes then over an hour later we were still waiting. Ultimately it was mediocre Chinese food, definitely not worth the wait. I gave it 2 stars because we were so hungry that we were just happy to get something in our stomachs. Next time I'm in the mood for Chinese I'll slap some sense into myself and get the Chori Pollo at Rio Grande instead! read more

I'm from out of town. My family living there orders take-out from them sometimes, so when I was there to babysit the kids, while the parents were out of town, I was instructed as to what to order for the kids plus whatever I wanted for take-out for one of the dinners that week. It was a birthday dinner for one of the kids (she had had her celebration over the weekend before the parents left, but they wanted her to have a special meal on her birthday proper, as well, and this is what she wanted.) #TheyDon'tLikeOutOfTownersWithOutOfStatePhoneNumbers Sooooo... I picked up my cellphone and called to order. I ordered the kids' choices, and added my own, which was Shrimp Fried Rice. Usually, this dish is bland, so I always order garlic sauce or teriyaki sauce (yes, I know teriyaki is Japanese, but sometimes a restaurant will carry something similar). The young woman on the phone took the order, took my phone number - which clearly was out of state, and said the order would be ready in 30 minutes. I said Great! It was 6:00. One minute later, I receive a call from the restaurant - a man this time - and he was irate that I had asked for sauce for my Shrimp Fried Rice. He explained that it is SUPPOSED to be bland. I explained that I don't like bland, seasonless food, and wanted the dish cooked in teriyaki or garlic sauce. He started yelling that this was a CHI-NEEEESE restaurant (that's not me, that's the way he said it)... not Japanese. So they don't cook with teriyaki. I said that was fine, just cook it in the garlic sauce. He SAID NO. Because it's supposed to be bland. He said he would put it in a container (it was a very, very small container) - on the side. AND then he charged me for the sauce, nearly 3 dollars! He also wanted me to answer if I knew where he was. I said yes, I know where the restaurant is. He yelled, "Where?! Where is it?" I was really taken aback. I have never been treated like this by any restaurant. I told him where his restaurant was. He then yelled that he wanted me to give him landmarks to prove I knew where he was. I gave him a few, and he demanded that I give him even more landmarks. I told him that I knew where he was. He hung the phone up on me. I made sure to get there at 6:30, so I could get back and get the kids ready for bed after dinner. They did not have my food ready. He decided that he wouldn't cook our order until I arrived and paid for it first. I paid and waited, and waited. What else could I do? This was an 8-year-old birthday girl's special request for Chinese food on her birthday. They didn't give me my order until 7:15. No apology. No nothing. I had to rush back to feed 4 kids. I didn't get back home until close to 7:30, and it was a school night, and the birthday girl and her younger brother were in elementary school and needed to be in bed by 7:45. As a Chinese American, I normally don't write reviews about Americanized Chinese restaurants, because they all the same. But this one is so far the worst in the region. I walked in on Sunday for the first time and asked if they serve lunch special, the young lady told me yes so I ordered 3 take-outs and paid. A few minutes later, she told me that she was mistaken, that they serve combo on Sundays only. The difference is 6 dollars (3 nasty fried egg rolls). The owner firmly told me that either they gave me a refund or I pay more, with a straight face and no apologies at all. I made the mistake by paying and let go. I opened the food at home and quickly found out that the rice was not fully cooked!!! We tasted the food which is standardized American-Chinese food, with extra sugar and grease on everything.
