Probably time for a re-review. I haven't done a write-up since this place changed locations, moving from the shopping center with the IGA to the neat little white building across the street -- and that was years ago at this point. The long lapse is partly because I always have trouble reviewing places like China Fun. It certainly fills a certain niche in this remote-ish Vermont town. The folks who run it are really great. They're totally upfront about making and serving Chinese American food rather than the real thing. Serving sizes are enormous -- and prices are unparalleled in an area near two ski mountains, full of subpar $20 salads, sized for (small) rabbits. It's not really a genre I enjoy, but perhaps once a year, in December, we have to pay homage to Jewish Christmas by ordering from this place. The food is consistent. We know just what we're getting. Mooshu pancakes are not completely out there in terms of authenticity. (They even include a few slivers of wood ear fungus.) When I eat the food, I think about the tiny population of this town, the -25 degree temps that winters sometimes bring, the racially homogenous demographics of the area, and the Trump flags waving from a few area homes even in a state iconic for its progressivism... China Fun is not a Hakkasan, a Din Tai Fun, a Yin Ji Chang Feng, a whatever -- but this food tastes like resilience and grit. And that fortifies me. read more

This is your typical Chinese restaurant and with this being said, it is a good one. If you are craving that standard Chinese-American food you will not be disappointed with this place. Most people have their orders as take out, but we decided to dine-in on our visit. It was about 6:1 ratio of take out to dine-in. The seating area is limited; however, it is not a problem with the number or take out orders. Do not be confused by the lack of people in the restaurant to busyness. It was a very cold evening and the restaurant was struggling to keep warm. The food is well prepared, but lacks a wow factor. First and foremost, if I could give this establishment a 0-stars rating, I would. It's that awful - the customer service and the food. I ordered four items and of those four, two were not what I asked for. When I returned home to eat, I opened the containers and saw that one of the items was a completely different dish, and the other was not made how I was told it would be made. When I called the restaurant, the manager informed me that they are distributing old menus that don't have accurate descriptions. I asked, "Well, why didn't you tell me what's actually in the dish when you know it's the wrong description on the menu?" He told me "You're getting more stuff, you should be happy." I said "No, I'm getting another dish that I don't want with ingredients that I don't want." He then said, "I can't do anything about it. You should be happy with more food." What type of customer service is this??? Why not reimburse your customer for false advertisement? Why not provide the correct meal? Instead, you tell me that I should be happy and its my fault that I didn't know that the menu was outdated?? Whomever this person is, he should not be the voice of the business. Then there's how the food that I received tasted - ABSOLUTELY BLAND AND AWFUL. Myself and my friend both agreed that the food is tasteless and since they're putting the same ingredients in the dishes we had, there was nothing to differentiate one dish from another. I ordered Veggie Fried Rice, Fragrant Chicken, Shrimp Lo Mein, and Kung Pao Chicken. With the exception of the Shrimp Lo Mein, they all contained the same ingredients. It was an absolutely awful experience and I will not be going back to this place. I usually don't write reviews but I want to tell all Vermonters to not support this business which does not care for its clientele and has disgusting food. This establishment should be avoided at all costs. The customer service is horrible and what makes it worse is they don't care. I get concerned when I read reviews due to the lack of objectivity but in this case I had to share how rude, offensive, and insensitive the management behaves. The food quality is marginal at best, but they have a monopoly in Waitsfield/Warren. If anyone wants to open a take out only Asian cuisine establishment, there is plenty of business in the Valley. Oh, and we gave them the benefit of the doubt on a few occasions, but received the exact same out come. The worse service and marginal food quality. All of this transpired prior to and during COVID. It was a real loss when they closed down at the beginning of lock down. I thought we lost the only place for good, cheap Chinese food that is flavorful and varied. During our 3 days stay at a beautiful BnB in Waitsfield, we were craving some Asian food, so I got on Yelp to see what our options were. There weren't many options so we decided to give Chine Fun a try. We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was given it's extremely affordable price. We ordered a hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, General Tso's chicken, and Szechuan chicken with garlic sauce. All were very tasty! For the only Chinese food restaurant in the Valley, they could give horrible service and mediocre service and people would still go there.. BUT THEY ARE SO NICE HERE. They are very kind and nice people without that nasty attitude you get at most restaurants in the area that act like they are doing everyone such a HUGE favor. The service is prompt, the food is well wrapped, timely and prepared when you call. You don't have to stand around and get treated like a leper because you are ordering takeout. I would love to give them more stars, even their pricing is good and portions are not cheap.. Kung Pao - with shrimp String beans - with pork Wonton soup (We actually ordered egg drop, but that's what we received) Fried Rice - with shrimp Mixed veggies - with chicken That's what we ordered. Overall food was good. Flavor was tasty and maybe a bit too oily. Service was fine.. ...until I asked for chili paste. One of the sons. (i'm guessing?) gave me a small plastic container.. (1oz probably) which was maybe half full.. and I told him we have 6 ppl.. and that we're THAI! He goes back.. and says "i'll fill it to the top". SERIOUSLY? We spend $60+ and you're gonna be cheap about chili paste? I even tipped $5.. prior to this incident.. but I guess that really doesn't make any difference. Way to screw up a customers experience. I was really considering putting fewer stars; however, I don't feel it's fair for one persons mistake to fall on the entire business. Like I said.. the food was still pretty good. read more

I am normally a fan but I ordered cold sesame noodles, they were the worst example I have ever seen. They had bid globs of tahini or some type of paste in the noodles, I just closed the container and put it back in the bag. The man on the phone had an attitude too. I suppose if I were a tourist I wouldn't be writing this but normally I love the food here and the young guy who is usually on the phone. I like the Hot & Sour which is not too spicy hot, and hardly sour, and with lots of flavor and veggies. Good marks too for the Egg Drop soup. Hunan Beef and Hunan Shrimp are good choices. Kang Pau beef is also a winner. Other Hunan entrees are tasty and not too spicy hot - unless you ask them to make them hot spicy. The white rice is good for chop sticks.
