When I went into the the golf shop a young man (early 20s) came in after a few seconds and asked if he could help. I explained that I was just stopping by to check out the course. And asked the rates. I was informed the regular weekend rates ($35 walk) and that there was also a twilight of sorts at 3 pm (everyday). I then asked about the 4 rounds for $70 (nice offer) and was told it expired last week. I had printed off a coupon/offer in anticipation of stopping into the course to possible play and/or check it out Saturday - there was no expiration on the coupon. Black Rock did not look like it was that great in terms of condition so I left. After all why would I travel all that way again if not for a better golf course, more friendly staff, or some other compelling reason? And w/o the offer there would be no reason to go back. There were very few players on the course. I would have played with the offer or as an alternative an offer of early twilight if I waited a bit. Sadly this experience is not unique amongst golf courses these days. A young kid running things in prime time (noon on a weekend) and having no clue about how to get a person to play today, enjoy themselves, and come back in the future. PS - I did get a follow up from the pro (Scott, I emailed him my thoughts). He offered a free round in the future which is nice. I may take him up on that at a future date, but I just wish GCs would appreciate golfers a bit more.

We play the Senior Special for $25.00 with a cart on Tuesday. Wonderful experience. With a little improvement in the cart maintenance, this would be 5 stars for me.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a golf fanatic. You know how some people go to parties "for the food"? Well, I…read moreplay golf for the beer and for the cigars. And also because my boyfriend is an avid and MAD-talented golfer. So what you are going to read here is a non-golfer's review of a golf course. What's pretty, what's not, and any other random thoughts that come to mind. If you want a technical evaluation of a golf course, including whether the tee boxes are level (apparently that's important)... this is NOT the review for you. I suggest you read the other reviews here (if there are any) or go buy one of those fancy-schmancy golf magazines. K? K!! Have you ever been to the middle of nowhere? I have... and it's pretty fun! Kinzua Hills Golf Club is about 4 hours from Portland, in rural Wheeler County. It has a long history... which you can read about on their website if you are interested. We were there for a couples' golf tournament. Some friends of ours are members, and they invited us to join them for the weekend. The course has six holes, so you play three times around. There is a clubhouse but services are limited. There is no pro shop, or club rentals. Pat can hook you up with a rental cart for the weekend if you don't bring your own. You could walk the course, but how fun is that? Accommodations? There is an adjacent campground, where you can hook up your RV (for a couple bucks a day) or set up a tent. There are also state and county parks in the surrounding area. The nearest hotel is in Fossil, about 20 minutes away. Fun? You betcha. Laid-back and affordable, Kinzua is a great weekend escape. We'll be back... soon!

Not everyone does but it's worth a try. I have had a few times in a twosome that I have been stuck behind a foursome right off the 1st tee. Not ideal. The cafe is solid and the ladies are nice. Been more than once that they didn't have a dog ready to order. I guess it could be worse. My only concern to note is that I have ran into golfers who have poor etiquette which slows down play, no Marshal on course. Sometimes these golfers don't know to let you play through. Something a Marshal could handle pretty easily. Prices are very competitive though. Twilight hour prices you can't beat. I will be back.

Every time I have been there this year the round has lasted well over 4 hours (4 hours and 50 minutes today). The course gets backed up often, and the course does not enforce a quick pace of play. We had to tee off 5 minutes after our tee time, and eventually called the club house to have a Marshall find which group is holding everybody up because it took an hour to play the first three holes. The club house then told me that they don't have a Marshall and we should just ask the group ahead of us to let us play through, which doesn't really matter if they're also being held up. The course is also wedged between a highway and an airport, so if you're looking for a quick and relaxing day of golf, you won't find it here.
