Short version: I was a patient as a child, and what CRG did to me was abuse. These people are frauds, and you should keep your kids the hell away.
---
As I look over the other reviews here, I'm troubled by a curious absence. Where are the reviews from people who were patients as children? You see, CRG was established in 1993 -- long enough ago that many former patients as children are now adults -- and yet, I only see reviews from one adult patient and from parents. Where are the reviews of *Children's* Resource Group from former children?
This is not an easy review to write. I was a CRG patient when I was young, and for years after I ceased "treatment", the lingering confusion and shame I suffered would've made it impossible to write any account of the experience. And now, over a decade since, the thought of what they did to me still makes me tremble with anger. I can't account for the lack of reviews from other grown patients, but in my case, it's taken that long to grasp a simple, painful truth:
My treatment by Children's Resource Group was nothing less than abuse. Julie T. Steck of CRG abused me. For years.
Now, before I go on, please understand that I use the word 'abuse' advisedly. I'm not claiming that Julie or anyone else at CRG did anything illegal. Nor do I think she intends to make a living by harming children. Nevertheless, what she did was -- and is -- child abuse of the most soul-destroying sort.
If you think that's an exaggeration, I'm guessing you've never been pushed on antipsychotics in the midst of an illegal off-label drug marketing campaign by the manufacturers. You've never had your reports of side-effects dismissed and blamed on your diagnosis. You've never watched your life and academics spiral downward because the drugs leave you tired and foggy-headed -- and yet your psychologist claims they're helping and wants to increase the dosage.
It was abuse. I have never been made to feel so broken, so unheard, and so powerless, and I have often thought that it would've been better if Julie had beaten me instead. I imagine it would've hurt less, and my parents and I would've recognized the harm immediately. As it was, CRG stole my adolescence, and I'm convinced if I hadn't rejected all the drugs and labels when I went away to college, I would've remained on a slow slide to being 300 lbs. and a lifetime psych patient -- or worse, an early death.
Of course, this was a long time ago and memories are faulty -- but I have my session notes. I have in the notes where Julie (I won't dignify her with the name "Dr. Steck") dismisses my claims of fatigue from a drug known to cause fatigue. I have in the notes where she, a non-prescribing *psychologist* plays chemistry set with my brain by suggesting new drugs or an increased dosage. (for the record, Ann Adinamis was the prescriber. She has her own practice now and no longer works for CRG. Stay the hell away from Ann.) Where she tells my parents they need to lower their expectations. And I can see in the notes what she didn't write about: my hopes, dreams, feelings, any kind of empathy or understanding of my problems in terms of something other than a diagnosis.
As I said earlier, I don't think Julie Steck was trying to hurt me. Few psychologists have evil intentions, and aside from her professional activities I've no reason to think she isn't otherwise a decent person. I just don't think she can tell difference between what's helpful and harmful because she's been seduced away from humanistic psychology by a drugs-and-diagnosis approach to children's problems. She's lost the ability to listen to children as people with feelings that can be understood and make sense in context. She's forgotten that not all academic problems are manifestations of some proofless "chemical imbalance" or innate biological fault. Julie's a major figure at CRG, and while I'd like to believe she's learned something over the years, I look at the CRG website and their Youtube channel, and it's clear to me that very little has changed since my time with them. Lots of dubious yet scientific-sounding neuro explanations, arguments for drugs..
Oh, and the other doctors. Here are the drug company payments for the prescribers at CRG:

Dr. Rowland

Note the top drugs: Invega, Latuda, Seroquel, Rexulti, Abilify...
These are antipsychotics. Tranquilizers, basically, all of which have terrible, often permanent side effects. Children can't meaningfully give consent to these drugs, and I'm convinced anyone, ANYONE, who regularly prescribes these drugs to children is a child abuser.
God help any child who's subjected to CRG's "care". read more
