    Harrison Children's Center

We've had our daughter in HCC since Oct 2011 and we could not be happier. When she enrolled last…read moreautumn, she had just turned 3, was still in pull-ups and had been pulled out of a Manhattan Montessori pre-k because in my husband's and my opinion, there was no progression or growth. In just 2 weeks at Harrison Children's Center, she was potty trained and by the end of that first month her vocabulary had trebled and continues to do so. The teachers, TAs and office staff could not have been more wonderful and supportive of my daughter and me during our transition from city to suburban life. In addition to a great nurturing environment, my daughter benefited from a curriculum and staff that really challenged and stretched her developing mind and growing set of social and life skills. The staff arranges class trips and family nights and the children go out for daily walks and there is outside play in their fenced-in and fully supervised playground almost everyday except in bad / rainy weather. The school serves cold breakfasts and hot lunches prepared by an in-house cook. My daughter has learned art, science, music, sign language and so much more. It's been a year now and I can honestly say that I have absolute trust in these people with the most precious person in my life. There is nothing bad to be said about this program or the fantastic team of people who work in making it all happen. Kudos to Debbie Imperia, the Director of HCC for her unflagging support for this mom with a daughter who manages to delight those around her even while trying their patience! And a special shout-out must go to Kamala Carducci for calming my fears, taking my (many) calls and showing me the ropes of suburban daycare.

    Mohawk Day Camp

This is a review for the summer camp, only, where my seven-year-old Onondaga Chief has been going…read morefor two years in a row. Adam Wallach and Ken Barer do an incredible job of running the camp, marketing it, communicating with parents, rallying kids for weekly spirit days -- and generally rockin' it. The kids swim twice day and are given just the right amount of freedom for their age. My guy was thrilled to ride his bike around on trails independently (without a grownup following closely) in mountain biking. Picky eater though he is, he seems to eat decently well, carbo-loading every day at lunch. Kids get occasional treats like fruit sushi, which the kids get to make themselves, trips to an ice cream truck, and cold (not-too-unhealthy) popsicles in the afternoon. Our guy kept telling us about eating fresh strawberries at lunchtime that were picked, he said, from the camp's own strawberry patch. (I can't verify this claim; it did seem like it'd take an improbably long growing season and an awfully, awfully large patch of strawberries to supply all those hungry kids for the summer.) Counselors keep the kids hydrated in the heat, buses are shockingly timely (MTA should take note!). Bus counselors do a great job of communicating bus arrival times. Activities are varied and interesting, including options like "mining," water works, pottery, archery, crafts, farming(!), all manner of sports (tennis, soccer, baseball, etc..) -- and there is always something new going on. My guy was excited to go from the moment he woke up each morning. Yes, the camp is guilty of blatant cultural appropriation -- but we get that at this point, there's monetary value in the branding that makes change difficult. At least they're changing the logo in coming years. We'd be thrilled if they actually taught the kids a bit about the tribes of the Haudenosaunee / Iroquois Confederacy that the groups are named after. (Our son reports that there is some sort of small "museum" on the grounds with a few artifacts found on-site.) We did some of our own research. All in all a fabulous, fun way to spend the summer. Our guy is counting the years until he gets to be a counselor himself.

A great place for kids to spend the summer. The communication is top notch! They built their own app to share photos and for parents to talk directly with the counselors during the summer. Plus, there is a preschool during the year. What a GREAT place!

We moved to the area when our son was 20 months old, and the first thing I noticed he was not getting sick as often at his previous daycare. Gigi is very knowledgeable about child behavior and development stages, she helped us (first time parents) to go through terrible two without stress. There was no bitting, screaming and tantrum period was short and relatively easy. They are a family oriented and adjust to your personal needs. When our second son was born, Gigi taught boys what it means to be a family, and created a strong bond between them. Since this is a mixed age group, younger kids naturally develop skills faster interacting with older peers, while older kids learning to be gentle with babies. As far as academics, they follow preschool programs and teach ABCs, numbers, shapes, working on scissors and glue...you name it. We don't speak English at home, so I can definitely tell boys developed their communication skills and academics at Gigi. In addition they teach Spanish too. Overall it was a great experience and I can't be more grateful to Gigi for her help!

There are themed days where the children dress up, a summer party and almost every holiday is celebrated. My daughter has attended since she was 14 months, this is like a second home for her. The house is kept meticulously clean, there is a play area, an eating area for lunch and rooms for the kid's nap time. Gigi has a large side yard with lots of toys for the children to play in warmer weather. I would recommend this day care service to anyone, a loving friendly environment - a home away form home.
