It offers daycare, preschool and grades kindergarten to eighth. There are about 100 children in K-8. One classroom per grade! It feels like a family. The teachers are kind and caring. No child feels overlooked or left out. The tuition is VERY reasonable and scholarships are available. Besides core classes the students take Spanish, Bible, computers, gym, art and music. Each day begins with prayer. Every Friday the students attend chapel. New construction and expansion is planned this year (2016) as the church adds infant care to its day care services. This will also being improvements to the school such as the addition of a band room as well as locker rooms off the gym. Recently the school's kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Brenda Heintz, was featured on a Grand Rapids TV news broadcast. She won the WGVU Cool Teacher Award. The Y has lots of group exercise classes ranging from Yoga to BodyCombat, and so far all the classes I've taken were taught by great instructors. Whether it's pickle ball, tennis, basketball, weight training, cardio exercises or swimming in the 25-yard pool, the Portage Y really shines. It is very affordable, and if finances are an issue, the Y offers lots of financial assistance.
