Deli Central - Tasty toasted wrap with chicken, cheese, sweet chilli sauce and red onions

I am in our Newcastle all week again with work so time to try out some of the new cafes hanging…read moreround and about the Central station. After strongly stating I wasn't going to subway, burger king or any other chain I eventually got the suggestion of this little gem round the back of the station in the archways. I nipped round early on lunch and scrutinised the menu which was HUGE! With a dozen sandwiches, toasted wraps, paninis and jacket potatoes it took me a while to narrow down my choice! I went for a special which was a toasted wrap loaded with chicken, cheese, red onions and lashings of sweet chilli sauce. It only took a few minutes to warm up so I used the time to peruse the small space. They had a few bar stools for those wanting to sit in with numerous leaflets for round and about Newcastle and Gateshead with events and offers on show. That is when I came across the wonderful Christmas menu whereby you can order a selection of festive sandwiches and get them delivered to the office on your selected lunchtime. At only £5.80 ahead it looked like great value. After taking my wrap and crisps back to the office (steal for the wrap at £3.10) I was definitely satisfied. The sweet chilli sauce oozed out and covered the moist chicken but without making a huge mess over my desk (extra points!) There really is something for everyone here with the addition of a breakfast menu. £2 for bacon or sausage sandwich and £3 for a breakfast wrap (including hash brown and cheese)! Definitely worth giving this place a go for a quick lunch if you are travelling or having a hectic day in the office!

Numerous award winning butchers that offer prime cuts of meat, fantastic mince and healthy plump chickens and eggs! Wonderful bakery that makes the best breads and pastry I have tried. Cheapest and most authentic pick and mix selection I have ever seen Fish monger, show repair, tea shop, cafes, clothing and boot sale, cd shops, home repair, clothing alterations ... Even a room with a scale in it! Grainger Market is magical. A must see, I consider the market a tourist attraction because of how traditional it is. The people in the booths all seem very authentic and very helpful.

I was used to markets being places with cheap tat and someone with a thick Black Country accent yelling from a van about sausages, and it's just definitely not like that here. There are still veggies, butchers (and decent cheeses to boot), but there are some seriously talented craftspeople too. It's good for a look around even if you don't feel like buying anyth8ng, odds are you probably will end up doing so.

I am not a poutine connoisseur, but the menu revealed lots of enticing sandwiches, many of which have an American deli look to them, so my husband and I ventured off to investigate for lunch one Saturday. Love the look of this new place - big menu on the wall, enticing displays of porchetta and other meats, as well as yummy homemade sweet things on display. We ordered at the front, and then our food was brought out to us at a communal table. We shared a salt beef sandwich, which tasted a lot like those back in my home country. Bread wasn't as good as a proper American deli, but the flavor of the pickle and the mustard adding a tang to the corned beef (aka salt beef) was so familiar. The meat was really tender and felt fresh, not heavy and oppressive as these big sandwiches can seem. We got a side of kracklin with apple jam - this is, of course, pork rinds (fried skin/fat). It's crunchy like a bag of crisps, but tastes like pork, which is weird, but also kind of delicious. My husband wasn't a massive fan, but I like all things salty and crispy, and thought the apple jam alongside was fantastic. We met one of my friends there by total coincidence, who got the poutine, and said it needed more cheese. She was impressed that they actually managed to find cheese curds, as they don't seem to exist in the UK, but they get them from a local dairy. Win! One of the owners said she was surprised and excited by how well the business was going, and hoping to expand the menu even more soon - right now it's just a couple of sandwiches and sides, albeit very creative ones that you can't get anywhere else. A welcome change from the usual boring sandwich shops you find everywhere, we'll be back for sure!

800th review, and pleased to give it to "mmm...." Silly name, but very fitting!…read more I'm a massive foodie, and I love to cook. I have a huge recipe collection and that includes several that very unusual ingredients. I file those recipes away in my head, thinking "if you can ever find amchur powder/palm sugar/tamarind paste/quail eggs/ancho chile powder/etc, you'll have to buy it and make this recipe!" Having just moved to Newcastle, I have already been impressed by how many ethnic ingredients and spices are just in your average Tesco, but Mmm... blows them all away! I think I spent 30 minutes in here, just scanning the shelves, trying to memorize what I saw so that I could come back when I needed a specialty ingredient. They have everything! For such a small shop, the selection is truly impressive. Lentils/grains/beans, hard-to-find spices, and my very favorite - a Mexican/Latin section with lots of different chile powders, chipotle chiles in adobo, and even Mexican cheese like queso fresco! And fresh corn tortillas! I thought I'd never ever find those things in Newcastle, and was well impressed. They also have olive oils and vinegars, some in bottles on the shelf and others to be tasted from large dispensers. You can fill an empty bottle of oil/vinegar then bring it back for a refill when it's empty and get a discounted price. Oh lord what else - hot sauces, preserves, loads of unusual condiments, beautiful dried pastas, various flours.... and yes, quail eggs! As they say on their website "Don't ask if we stock something, ask us where it is!" Right in the centre of Grainger Market, you will find this small but perfect foodie paradise. There's not a recipe in the world you can't make when you have access to everything that Mmm...has to offer! I'll probably be in here once a week.

This store was a little small and the product range in a way lacked especially compared to other stores, such as my favourite branch of Waitrose at Stratford City, near the London Stadium, now owned by West Ham United FC, and ir also in a sense struggles to compare to other stand-alone stores, in town centres and not inside malls such as Sheffield, Alderley Edge and Wilmslow. I didn't notice as many staff around the store as I'd expect from Waitrose, they didn't seem overly helpful either. The store basically seemed to follow a typical Waitrose layout, in a way the layout seemed like one would associate with a Little Waitrose store, just larger as their was so many similarities between this branch here and one of my "local" Little Waitrose stores, located at Manchester Spinningfields. This branch does use scan as you shop, but through the mobile app and not the scanners, I prefer this, but the QR code can be barely seen and is not in a great location overall. This store is okay, below average and doesn't compare to other branches of other supermarkets nearby such as Tesco Extra, which I have also reviewed today, giving their Gateshead Trinity Square branch a four star rating, sadly this Waitrose store here I only find to be worthy of a two star rating.

You'll definitely find me loitering around the hot beverages machine as I'm getting my daily freebie. You can get your free drink too by getting hold of a myWaitrose card (which is like any other supermarket loyalty card but grants you FREE drinks once a day). Located in Eldon Sqaure, this is a handy little Waitrose to shop at for your essentials that you have forgotten or want to grab on your way home (or like me, when you are waiting for you S.O. whilst he's in the loo which is right next door). Although it is quite pricey compared to other supermarkets, they have lush food on offer and things you may not easily find elsewhere (Okra anyone?), plus they are constantly reducing products that are going out-of-date. The store is simply laid out and has a deli counter located in he middle where there is always a smiling member of staff. Following the store around, you can pay by using the automated paying machines (accepts cards only though) or line-up for the numerous small tills. This store is really quite small and you can even shop with mini trolleys that can be taken from the left of the store. It's small but makes do, just don't expect to find everything.
