The sore was a typical tourist trap of all the things to buy the people were not real friendly I bought some yooper coffee there the cozy cabin blend it was terrible it tased like some chemical and I would never buy the Yooper coffee again not even to try another flavor I look it up an d there is no one that comes up"cozy Cabin " the store, I would not go again just was not my thing people working there could be nicer. read more

This place just opened recently in the laid-back town of Houghton, which is like the Portland, OR of the Michigan UP. Chickadees fits right in with its character and merchandise. Outside the store, you are greeted by a giant plush moose sitting on a stool next to the entrance. The shop consists of mostly home decor items, some "Michigan UP" related clothing (not the tacky shirts) and some ornamental jewelry as well. My wife found some nice peasant-chic style bandanas and my 4 year old Stunt Boy found a giant stuffed bear that compelled him to curl up next to it and suck thumb while in the store. And any of you in the UP who remember the Wardo's (formerly Ben Franklin) in downtown Iron River will like this place. In fact, it inherited some of the merchandise from Wardo's when it closed in the past year. read more

We were in Houghton for our son's wedding and stopped into Chickadees. I really love the style of clothing and warm cozy feeling of the shop. I would give this place a better rating based on the items they have for sale however, my past visit I asked the young lady that was working if my 6 year old son could use the restroom and she told me they did not have a public restroom. My son was standing next to me dancing around because he needed to go right then or we would probably have an accident. I asked her where the nearest bathroom would be that we could use and she stated we would need to walk a block and a half to find one. I grabbed the things I was purchasing from my mom and asked her to please ring me up so I could leave to find this restroom she was talking about. She seemed as if we were bothering her and was very rude as I told her which items were mine. I paid, left the store, and went to the very next business I saw which was a very small restaurant right next door. (Remember that I have NOT purchased ANYTHING at this restaurant) I asked the lady that was behind the counter if my son could please use her restroom and she said yes, of course! My point of this hole story is: I find out that at Chickadees there is a dressing room which is their restroom also so I guess if I had tried the shirt on that I bought my son could have used the restroom then?!! I love the items in this store as does my mom. She spends a lot of money in here because we used to LOVE this little boutique and we love supporting local business every time we come to town and this is how staff treated us. I had been avoiding the downtown area for months, stopped in here prior to Christmas and I'll definitely be back. Lots of "local flavor" stuff, without the gross beer etc jokey merchandise at other places. Plus quality clothes and hand made jewelry which don't cost an arm and a leg. Very helpful salesperson "Jules" who was pleasant and engaging without being obnoxious or overbearing. The store doesn't have everything but in the same block you have three restaurants and a fudge store. No complaints! read more

Love, love, love! The women's clothing selection, albeit tiny--in one corner of the store, always has several things I have to have! Things you don't see coming and going--I love the uniqueness! Price is good too. They also carry Natural Life goodies and other fun brands. Some U.P. themed items that aren't typical of your usual tourist trap. Many scarves, socks, candles, home décor and jewelry items that are also unique--fashionable, not tacky. They also have a location 2 hours away in Marquette (haven't been to that one yet). To me, this is the best shopping in downtown Houghton. Wish there were other fun shops and less bars/restaurants. read more

I live down in the lower peninsula near the Lansing area, but whenever I travel to the UP I always make sure to set aside enough time make a trip into Chickadees. The staff is so kind and cheery, and by no means are they pushy at all. I have bought so many things from here (scarves, candles, clothes, jewelry, and so much more) and everything is great quality. Every time I wear something from Chickadees, whether it be my beautiful (and very warm!) chevron scarf or one of my many pieces of unique jewelry, I always receive a multitude of compliments. I've recently had friends who insist on me buying their birthday gifts from here because everything is to love. That is the beauty of Chickadees, there is such a great range of items and everything is so unique (but not tacky) that it keeps you coming back. This little boutique has certainly won my heart over, and it is so hard to not walk out with half of the store every time I go. They are constantly getting in new things, so even if you went once a week you would be sure to find something that you didn't see before. That is another thing that I love about Chickadees, they always seem to know "what's in" and popular. Anyone who walks in that store is bound to find a handful of things they can't put down. I really hope this charming store sticks around for a while because it sure has me coming back every time! :) read more
