HANDS DOWN the best Korean food I've had so far in life! The hottest chicken had this beautiful sweetness and spiciness as well - somehow they managed to fold in so many flavors. The tuna avocado bimibap was so fresh and the chicken ribs were AMAZING - how they fried them so well I will never know. Kimchi and miso soup was a perfect complement to it all! Will be dreaming about this place even when I leave Melbourne Loved the music they played and it was in such a cute little lame way. Have been told that this was one of the few places in Australia which serve a tex-mex Korean fusion dish (originating from Austin) known as Kimchi fries. Finally the time came to try it out. Did it live up to the expectations? Sortof - I guess I've been spoilt by the real thing at Chilantros and Vatos Urban tacos. I guess extra points for being one of the first in Australia to do so. It probably could have used a bit more of a spicy kick (I like my spicy food to be spicy), and probably the price was a bit high to what I'm used to paying therefore raising my expectations. Return factor though? I probably would try other stuff such as the Korean fried chicken which this place seems to be famous for and I do like how they accept cards which means less digging for change or worrying about whether there is a nearby ATM or not. read more

Came here before a gig as I was craving korean fried chicken and this place did not disappoint. It is easy to miss if you don't pay attention as it is down an alley and rather nondescript. The kimchi fries were nice, a bit meat heavy for my liking but my partner enjoyed them. I devoured the fried chicken and whilst not explosively hot it had a nice kick which built up as I ate more. I loved the mix of the rice cake and potato wedges. The side salad of cabbage was helpful in breaking up the flavour. I felt like I needed to be rolled out as the portions were generous. My only gripe is the stools aren't that comfortable and jars are not proper beer drinking containers. I get the whole hipster/trendy beverage containers but I want a nice normal boring glass read more

It's in a laneway, it's tiny - blink and you'll miss it, and its got an ultra cool vibe from the wall decor, to the communal tables and the easy listening pop/rnb tunes playing over lunch. It totally had me from hello. The lunch specials looked good, so I ordered a chicken schnitzel with soy sauce and rice for $10. The wait time was under 10 minutes, thumbs up to that! But while I was waiting, I wanted to take a photo of the menu, and the waitress told me that was not allowed. Strange? It's just a menu, not the secret recipe with 22 herbs and spices... The portion was decent in size, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. However, the bread crumbed part of the schnitzel kinda distracted me for some reason, rather than being a complimentary ingredient, it tasted like burnt chalk.. or something. The cabbage with mayonaise was a nice addition to the meal but I guess I fancy the pickled cabbage more (in traditonal Korean restaurants where you get this as a side dish). The other dishes may be worth coming back to try... but I can't remember what they were now since I don't have a pic of the menu! read more

Korean is always pretty good so Chick-In is already ahead. It's kinda quirky so that also brought brownie points. I love a bargain so a lunch specials menu through till 5pm made for an enormous lunner (lunch/dinner...see what I did there?) with lots of variety in the plate of spicy Asian deliciousness. The service was rather shite. It didn't help that it was just one girl in front of house but her poor hospitality training sees her clearing tables ahead of taking orders, not getting drinks sorted while waiting for food (she didn't offer at all and I asked for a glass of water literally 4 times. Not sure why she would deprioritise such a quick, golden rule task below restocking napkins!). It was kinda baffling and a bit annoying but she was friendly and polite at least. The food was tasty but I probably wouldn't pay what they charge as dinner prices. It's quite small with communal tables only, and the decoration provides distraction while waiting for food. It was pretty fast though really. They have a selection of interesting drinks it seems - part hipster part Asian. Anyhow I'd go here again for lunch if I'm in the hood but it wouldn't exactly be a destination. Really I'd give it 3.5 stars but you know....who really pays that much attention anyway? read more

Chick-in has been my go-to place for my periodic fried chicken fix, and it hasnt disappointed once. Located in a tiny (and slightly filthy) 'am I gonna get robbed/stabbed tonight' alley that is very close to Southern Cross station. The place is clean, well-lit and with a nice wooden decor and lots 'Korean Chicken and Beer' posters all over. There is a bathroom located next to the place which they have the key to. Let's just say that it wont be winning any seven stars soon, but will do the job. If, like me, you use your hands to attack the chicken, take with you lots of napkins and some wipes just in case. The menu is quite varied and has everything you'd expect - different flavoured/spiced chicken with bones on and off, potato wedges, rice cakes, beer, etc... To be honest, I have never had anything other than a whole and boneless fried chicken with sweet and sour and chilli sauce (half each) and wedges, and I have never been happier. If only the rest of the world could be breaded, fried and covered in delicious sauce, there would be no more wars. Or slim people. read more

Tucked down a tiny alley at the "Beirut End" of Collins St, Chick-in & Beer offers exactly what the name suggests, Korean chicken dishes with a variety of beers to match. The space is very small, but efficiently used with three long communal tables, industrial stools and a big mural of chicken propaganda (is that a genre?) posters on the back wall. The menu is short, cheap and well done. Mainly varieties of fried chicken (breast, thighs, wings, schnitzel) and sides (rice, chips, Korean inspired coleslaw?) There are also some rice based dishes that look fresh, tasty and filling. Food is freshly cooked, arrives fast and tastes great. Service is friendly. Due to the small size and high turnover, this is not a place to linger. You'll be in and out and have your KFC fix met in under $15 and an hour. read more

This cute, dark little place down a laneway near Southern Cross is a sweet surprise: It was Monday arvo in Melbourne but felt like a Saturday night in Seoul or Tokyo (or at least a Wednesday night). Menu is simple: Pick your chicken and pick your style. You can have honey soy braised chicken on rice with salad, fried chicken wings with potato wedges and coleslaw, or a delish fried chicken sammich on brioche with ranch dressing. Plenty of beer if you feel that way inclined, and lord knows fried chicken is smashing with a brew. I had a very tasty, sweet lemon iced tea for a reasonable three dollars. Chick-In really brought me back to my time in Seoul while also reminding me of the trashy treats of my American youth ("Haaay ranch dressing, how you doin?"). Good times. read more

Extend your Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) repertoire past Gami's and hit up this place. Chic-in's KFC tastes a little better in my opinion, and I still love Gami's. It's a small place and the kitchen was a little slow but there's still a lot to love about this almost-hole in the wall serving up classic beer & fried food goodness, Korean style. read more
