I came here on New Years Day for dinner. The menu is 6 pages long, but there is a picture of every dish, which makes it really helpful to decide (I assume especially if you're not Korean). I kept it classic and went with the beef bibimbap, and boy am I glad I did! The only adjustment I made was no bean sprouts. Served in a sizzling hot stone bowl, you'll have to control yourself for a couple of minutes to let the rice continue to cook and get all crispy on the edges. The server was quite sweet and asked me if I knew how to eat it when she delivered the bowl. I sheepishly said, "um, mix it all together?" and she nodded in approval and skipped away. All of the ingredients and flavors blended together perfectly, aided by a generous helping of gochugang (sweet/spicy red sauce). I added a grapefruit soju to wash it down. Like many places, you'll self serve cutlery (chopsticks, spoons, napkins) as well as water from the counter. Someone takes your order either at the register or your table (didn't seem to be rhyme or reason to which or why), and then drops off your food when you're done. Space is tailored to groups of 2 or 4, though one group of about 6 or 7 kids came in together looking worse for wear after NYE. Prices are about $15 each for most entrees. Most of the staff are Korean and we instantly knew that this place serves authentic Korean food. We ordered a substantial amount of food, and we think that the original fried chicken is really tender. The sriracha mayo dipping sauce that came with it made it an impossible dish to dislike. The rest of the dishes were alright, they were nothing to shout about so you probably won't hate it, but also wouldn't come back for it. The fried chicken is a definite must-try if you ever happen to be at this restaurant!

It's decked out decently enough; kind of has a warehouse feel complete earthy tones. I'd recommend dining in the basement close to the front for 2 reasons: 1. The smoke that inevitably billows out in korean bbq will rise and so if you're one of those poor buggers on the top floor, you will be copping 3 levels worth of bbq fumes 2. It's very close to the kitchen so your food comes out amazingly fast. One thing I must share are the desserts at this place which are absolutely amazing. The desserts are only 6 bucks a pop and you can have everything from black sesame ice cream, green tea cakes and ice-cream, lemon sorbet with jelly and black and white chocolate mousse. You'd easily expect to pay $15 for comparable desserts elsewhere. To understand my complex voting system, this place is a 4 for food, plus 1 for the dessert and minus one for the service, which was about as interesting and engaging as a wet lettuce leaf. They are attentive enough in that they bring out the food fast, and replace your grill as soon it gets blackened like coal, but as I've stated elsewhere, to get a 5, I need an experience with friendly casual banter! I've just come back from a trip to Seoul and the food was amazing - nothing as dull as this was. Some of the dishes had some spice but no flavour. This street houses three other KBBQ spots (Donwoori, Woo Ga and Hallah). Talk about stiff competition. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 7:15pm). It wasn't too busy so everyone was sitting on the main floor but they do have an upstairs. This place is legit; the BBQ's are charcoal style. The menu had some happy hour specials (10:00pm to 1:00am) and daily specials (Monday to Thursday only). The rest of the menu consists of charcoal BBQ (beef, pork, chicken, seafood), set menus for 2/3/5-6 people, casserole (aka. hot pots), soups, main dishes and drinks. Service is great as they do all the cooking and cutting for you. They also changed our plates halfway and took out the hot charcoals when our last meats were done cooking (so that they didn't overcook). FYI: they give a 5% discount if you pay with cash. Otherwise, they charge you for using card (1.5%) and it has to be over $30.00 AUD. - Purple rice ($2.00 AUD) - oddly, you don't get any rice with the set menus so we had to order one bowl to share. - Banchan - you get three types (kimchi, bean sprouts and pasta salad) and it's unlimited refills. The kimchi actually impressed me as I'm not usually the biggest fan. Bean sprouts were good, pasta salad was boring. - Beef set B ($47.50 AUD) - beef bulgolgi, LA beef ribs and kimchi soup. They bring out a basket of lettuce wraps (the cheap kind) and pickled onions. The kimchi soup was fantastic! Great broth; again, tasty kimchi and there was a mix of tofu, enoki mushrooms, jalapeños and green onions. Bulgogi was nicely marinated and LA beef ribs were thin, satisfying bites. - Pork belly ($13.90 AUD) - this is their Tuesday charcoal BBQ special. You get three pieces of pork belly. They weren't too fatty and got crisped up on the BBQ. Another solid Korean spot. Reasonable prices, great service and tasty food.

Until now... Darac has been in my bookmarks now for some time and last night I finally got there for an early dinner. My dining companion and I shared the gyoza and then had a bibimbap each. The worst thing about this place? We waited for what seemed an eternity after ordering and I wanted to lunge myself across the table next to us to eat things from their bubbling cauldron of "stuff". It smelt amazing, btu having waited for 30 minutes for ANY food to arrive on my table meant I was about ready to chew my own arm off. Finally, the bibimbap arrived and shortly thereafter, our Gyoza (which sits under the Japanese banner rather than the Korean, but hey let's not get technical). The filling was fresh, the dough soft and not greasy and the side dish of yuzu dipping sauce was amazing and lifted the seafood filling. The bibimbap? AWESOME. I'm all for participative dining, so anything I need to mix, assemble or play with is good in my book. Bimbimbap fits the brief, needing to be mixed up (with the accompanying mild and sweet sauce or the hot chilli EVIL) being being devoured. I drowned that bad boy in chilli sauce and loved that the hot clay bowl it comes served in continued to keep the whole dish hot throughout my eating frenzy. However, Hwaro in my honest opinion goes above and beyond these basics. We had the pleasure of going here for a friend's birthday and the food was amazing. The one qualm I do have with a place like this is the cooking of the meat. I know some people think why should they pay to then cook their own meat. However, I'm of the opinion that cooking your own meat is half of the fun of it. The staff were pretty insistent that it would only be them flipping and cutting the meat. Gripe over... Nevertheless, this place would go down as my favourite Korean BBQ place in the CBD. I'd say it edges the places near Vic markets and beats Dae Jang Geum Korean BBQ in Chinatown.
