If you are wanting to get out of the normal tourist routine and spend time in a delightful country…read moreFrench restaurant, Le Caillau is the place! Beautifully situated among the vines of the Vallée du Lot, Le Callau is artfully considered, with seating under the trees or in a re-purposed barn or recently completed dining room/bar area. Chaz, his wife and their team take great pride in their 'farm to table' philosophy. Each server is well versed in the gustatory selections of the moment, and service is always warm and welcoming. Children of all ages find the interior courtyard interesting to explore, with its fountain and ever-inviting weeping willow tree. A walk along the country lane after an interesting, satisfying meal, prepare one for after dinner desserts and/or drinks. "Casual and VERY classy" is how the experience is best described. For example, I arrived with 3 elderly guests, all with some mobility issues, and Chaz immediately brought out padded chairs from the dining room as he recognized that old bodies would have a difficult time sitting for any length of time on the typical 'minimalist' patio chairs that are usually found outdoors. (We were in for a 3-hr lunch, so this was a great idea)!! Le Caillau is a 300-year-old wine domaine, and the complex includes a luxury 2-bedroom suite, including private swimming pool and garden. (NOTE: We have dine there many times, but never stayed overnight, so cannot speak to the accommodations, other than saying EVERYTHING is tastefully decorated and service at all levels is impeccable). Reservations are a must, but, in order to enjoy the experience fully, come when not pressed for time. This is a place to relax, enjoy and experiment with new epicurean delights! Attached are some photos, but photos at LeCaillau com are superior. Enjoy! This is a most memorable experience.

This impression was not improved when I entered this restaurant (situated just outside Monein) to find that it was completely empty of patrons and staff. After wandering around for a while Madame Rose appeared and thereafter the echoes of Rea's 'classic' vanished from my mind as I was thankfully distracted by this restaurant's excellent cooking. To start, I opted for duck which was skewered, cooked rare and served with a chicory salad. The salad was the key to the dish as the slightly bitter and acidic chicory was perfectly complemented by the rich duck. Matters improved further with a main course which combined morels and sweetbreads in a delicious filo parcel. It was not what I had been expecting (the dish had been described as a "cassoulet") but the combination was nevertheless wonderful. I finished the meal with the kind of cake that you only seem to find in France - delicate layers of different red fruit mouse and jelly balanced on top of one another to eye catching effect. It tasted as good as it looked - each bite was an explosion of decadent fruit. The only slight disappointment (in addition to the welcome) was the wine list which was fairly brief although it did feature a brief but good selection of wines from the region (with lots of half bottle options). However, the food was great and Auberge des Roses is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Every dish was absolutely delicious. Being the black sheep of the group, I got the Seabass while my other friends got steaks. The steaks were cooked perfectly. The seabass was simply divine. It was plated beautifully atop a bed of vegetables, inviting you to enjoy every single bite. The sauce was thoughtfully spread lengthwise across the rectangular plate, which also went wonderfully with the delicious bread. The Seabass was flaky and crisp and perfect. Our red wine paired beautifully with our meals, as per the server's recommendation. The dessert was incredibly balanced. Frozen nougat with a red berry coulli. The sweet, nutty nougat was cut perfectly by the tart berry. Everyone was asking for a taste. My friends scarfed down a Nutella creme brûlée in under 30 seconds, so it's safe to say that was delicious as well, I'd assume For only €30, for just a couple hours, this restaurant was our home. I hope you feel as welcomed to Toulouse as we did.

He quickly realized we didn't speak French and made time to come over and introduce himself, then went over the all french menu for us in English. The food is great, however he told us multiple times if we didn't like something to let him know and he would get us something we did like. At the end of the meal he even offered us an umbrella as it was raining outside. Stand up hospitality. The restaurant itself is very cozy inside. We sat in front of the window and got in some good people watching. Nice wine list and even some awesome local craft beers. Food was spectacular and at a good price. All locals here. Because of Remi and his wife though, we never felt like "tourists," or out of place. As one review mentioned, don't let the lack of reviews deter you from coming here. Truly a one of a kind experience!
