There were a large number of First Atlantic Restoration vans parked in close proximity to the entrance. Allowed to go through security screening I was surprised to be turned away and sent to Brock Cancer Center, Turning into Brock Center from Kempsville Road I discovered a convenient side entrance with much closer parking than entering through the beautiful front lobby. The side entrance opened to the hall that has the entrance to Outpatient Check in, which included Bloodwork, Imaging & the Breast Center. There I learned that the problems at Leigh were caused by water pipe breaks. Many of the Leigh employees had been sent to Brock to handle the patients being sent there. I've been a fan of the Brock Imaging Center for some time. Since fewer people realize there's an Imaging Center there, appointments are more readily available. I've had MRI's, Catscans and Bone Density Scans done at Brock. The equipment is state of the art and the employees are friendly. I'll continue to have my Imaging done at Brock with an added benefit of having discovered the more convenient Kempsville side entrance.

I would not recommend Dr. Janson to anyone. I trusted Dr. Janson with my gastroenterological care…read morefor a few years but have recently switched to a different doctor. This is because he has missed cancer twice, the second time being this past summer. The first time he missed my thyroid cancer. He kept telling me that I had "pretty bad" acid reflux and that's why my face, throat, and neck was hurting. I was prescribed every antacid medication available but the symptoms kept getting worse. His nurse finally suggested that I see an ear, nose, and throat specialist. I took her advice and finally I had resolution to my problem. I kept seeing Dr. Janson because I gave him the benefit of the doubt. However, this past June, I went to see him because I had stomach pain and my abdominal girth was increasing rapidly. His diagnosis after an upper endoscopy was delayed gastric emptying, which he had diagnosed a few years ago. Again, he prescribed medication and sent me on my way. After a visit to the ER a couple of weeks after seeing him, for stomach pain and not being able to breathe, I was diagnosed with a stomach mass. It turns out I had a 9-1/2 lb tumor. The mass was removed in July. I know am under the care of an oncologist. I trusted Dr. Janson to thoroughly investigate my gastrointestinal symptoms, instead he missed these two life-threatening conditions. I feel that he rushed to get me out of his office (and on to the next patient) and prescribed medications without taking the time to investigate and get to the real problems. I do have to say, however, that his staff is great, from the receptionist and appointment scheduler to most of the nurses.

Dr. Gamsey, I am…read morewriting you to make you aware of a situation in your offices that greatly impacted my care, causing an extremely stressful situation and an unnecessary delay in my care plan. You performed an upper endoscopy on 12/2/2024. Immediately afterward, you let me know that you were certain you were looking at a malignant stricture. The biopsy results confirmed that. What followed was an absolute nightmare from the perspective of someone who was just told they have cancer. I set up appointments with a thoracic surgeon, Dr. Reza, on 12/19 and oncologist Dr. Naga on 12/20. I was supposed to have a CT scan scheduled by your office prior to those appointments. An appointment was scheduled for me at Chesapeake Regional on 12/11/24. I drank the barium (which was extremely difficult due to the blockage), and showed up for the procedure, only to be told it had not been approved by insurance. The hospital said your office did not provide the clinicals to United Health Care. When I called your office, they said that was the hospital's job. The hospital said it was your office's job. Your nurse in Chesapeake got involved. She told me the person doing the insurance claim in the Virginia Beach office did not submit the information and that now she was stuck cleaning up the mess in so many words. My wife and I both went back and forth trying to get your office to do what was necessary to address UNC's request for information. Meanwhile, my appointments with the surgeon and oncologists were coming up and I still had no CT. I came to your office to try and talk with someone in person. I was upset and rightly so. I was told my your staff that I had an attitude. At that point I was in tears, telling them I didn't have an attitude, I was scared. I was told to take my order and go take care of getting the test myself. I had an appointment with my Primary Care, Dr. Reniva and told him what was happening. He immediately put in an order for a CT and talked with UNC. He had everything approved as STAT and I was able to get the CT on 12/18, the day before my surgical consult. This entire time I was trying everything I could to get the test scheduled, including trying to pay for it myself. I was absolutely beside myself. I was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer. It has spread to my liver, spine, ribs, shoulder and many lymph nodes. I went to Duke Cancer Center this week and Dr. Mettu noticed the gap between the endoscopy and the CT. I told her what happened. I realize the gap in time wouldn't have changed the outcome, but this situation should have never happened. Your office also needs some training on how to handle emotional and upset patients. They also need to take accountability and follow-through to do anything they can do to provide the BEST care for your patients. I have no issue with you Dr. Gamsey, you were great. But please take this to your staff and let them know this was unacceptable and make sure they understand that taking ownership, regardless of who's error it was, and taking care of the patient is the top priority. I am still stunned that your staff in Chesapeake told me to take my orders and good luck getting my scan. It's unbelievable. To tell a patient who just found out they have cancer that they have an attitude? That is shameful. I don't expect a response, but I would truly love to hear that you have addressed this situation with your staff in both offices. Respectfully, Tim Mayfield
