Cheryl's been doing my hair now for about six years or seven now ... I've followed her round town! Why have I bothered to do this rather than just stay local? Well, for quite a few reasons. I go into her Marchmont salon after a long hard day and sink into the chair with a sigh of relief. It's a wee oasis of peace - lovely calm surroundings, no stress or drama. Very relaxing. And she's great to chat to, really friendly and welcoming, and the time absolutely flies past. You can actually have a really interesting conversation with her instead of having some bored stylist sigh loudly and chant "so whereya gaun on yer holidays then?" into your left ear whilst frying your right ear with the hairdryer. Cheryl's very good company which is kind of important if you're in there for a couple of hours getting a colour done. And the way she does colour ... She gets it absolutely right EVERY SINGLE TIME. Even when I don't know myself what colour I want, she makes great suggestions, applies her magic, and hey presto, great results. When I do know what colour I want? She does that absolutely right too. Oh, and she also uses clipmeche instead of foils, so your highlights last way longer - happy days! The way she does cuts ... They're always exactly what you want. Which is unsurprising I guess seeing as she did her training at Cheynes. So you always get the feeling she absolutely knows what she's doing, and sure enough, the cuts always look great. And if I don't know exactly what I want done, she often knows better than I do what would look good - and then she does it. The icing on the cake for me though is the appointment times - she does evening appointments. This is soooo handy! Not having to take time off work during the week or away from the family at weekends is something I really value. Why oh why don't other hairdressers do evenings? They're really missing a trick. Cheryl Irvine Hairdressing opened about a year ago. The premises used to be a wedding dress boutique. When the boutique was closing I wondered what would open in its place. I live very close by and I was hoping that the new occupant would benefit me more than the previous resident. Luckily Cheryl opened her salon and I've been getting my hair cut by Cheryl since. The first time I visited I was walking by and noticed that Cheryl accepted walk-ins. It was about 7pm and I was on my way home from the gym. My hair needed a trim so I asked it was too late to make an appointment. Cheryl insisted that she would trim my hair that night. After I had a quick shower I came by and Cheryl listened to what I wanted. I was very happy with my trim and impressed that she stayed open for me. I've visited a few times since and I have always found Cheryl to be very accommodating. I always see her working late which really helps the busy 9-5ers (and those who want to save their Saturdays for other things). I've always received compliments on my hair cuts. I don't feel awkward or like I have to make small talk when I'm there. Cheryl charges 35 pounds for a hair cut and I think it's great value. If you are student it's only 25 pounds! I met Cheryl through Gumtree when I had finally had enough of my roots and wanted my hair done at the last minute before a work event. The next morning, she was at my house and completely revamped my hair. On top of doing a great job, she was also really friendly and great fun to be around which is a major plus for me. A lot of people dread going to the hairdressers for fear of boring conversation, but Cheryl is a real pleasure to spend time with. I went to see her at her new salon in Marchmont yesterday and the place looks great. Cheryl is a hairdresser who I find really understands what I'm looking for and does a fantastic job - at a very reasonable price. As a tricky blonde-haired customer, Cheryl is a perfectionist when it comes to making my highlights look natural and she completely avoids the banes of my life: yellow, brassy and stripy locks. Like Jennie S, I first met Cheryl at Cheynes Newhaven harbour. That was 13 years ago & she has been doing my cuts & colour ever since! She has also cut my youngest girls's hair since she was a toddler & last year did a superb teen makeover, from girly long hair to short & sassy, which my daughter loved! I cannot recommend Cheryl highly enough for her highly professional service and - very important! - her keen pricing. Cheryl's experience in high end salons and as a lecturer with Edinburgh College mean you will get a real quality cut/colour at reasonable cost. Her new salon in Marchmont is bright & welcoming - as is Cheryl herself! She is very flexible re appointments day & evening, to suit you. There is plenty of low cost metered parking immediately opposite/nearby residential streets or take the bus to the Meadows/Sick Kids area. Where would I be without Cheryl to give me my signature copper locks? Usually you're talking £120 to get your barnet cut and coloured by a senior stylist - Cheryl will charge nearly half that! You'll have your wee hair-pampering session in her peaceful wee salon in Marchmont. Nice chilled out music and a wee cup of tea. She doesn't rush you and always gives a a good chat! You can pay by card which also means not having to plan your appointment around a trip to the bank. The salon is very central and easily accessible by bus. Very handy for an after work appointment. She's so flexible that she's probably do your hair at 1am if you so wanted! She works all days of the week and will do her best to accommodate the best time for you. I can't highly recommend her more. I've never trusted any hairdressers before due to bad experiences but I've been seeing Cheryl for over three years now so that says a hell of a lot! read more

A couple of years ago I moved from Leith up to the Meadows. I used to get my hair done at Cheynes in Newhaven but I had the senior stylist and it would be up £125 a visit. So when I moved flat I wanted to move hairdressers. I asked on the Great Little Place Edinburgh Facebook page and they asked their fans. One of the results was a freelance hairdresser, Cheryl, who was trained by Cheynes but is much cheaper because she just rented a chair in a physio in Marchmont. Now she has opened up her own salon, still in Marchmont. I can't recommend Cheryl highly enough. She does an excellent job of colouring my hair and her prices are so reasonable. She is also very flexible on times which is great if you work 9-5 Mon-Fri. If you're looking for a new hairdresser or just fancy a change, give Cheryl a call. She is lovely :) read more

After my hairdresser of many years became unwell and could no longer cut my my hair, I tried over the next two years to find a hairdresser that I was happy with - without much success (and I did persevere, going back for more than one haircut to each hairdresser). That is until Cheryl was recommended to me by a friend who'd been listening to my frustration over finding a suitable hairdresser. Cheryl has endeavoured to understand the type of hair cut I wanted and has more than risen to the challenge, whilst advising and offering ideas along the way. She now knows how my hair lies and cuts my hair really well. We always have a laugh and going to visit Cheryl for a haircut is an absolute pleasure - I would thoroughly recommend her to anyone who has lost their favourite hairdresser or maybe never had one! read more

Top hairdresser. Highly recommend her, and have suggested her to my friends who are now repeat clients of hers. I am half Asian and wanted blonde, yet many hairdressers wouldn't try. I met Cheryl as she did my Ex's hair a few times, and he suggested I try her. I have always found it hard to find a hairdresser who I'd go back to, yet 8 years later, I can't recommend her highly enough. I appreciate her opinion and knowledge on products and what is suitable for my hair type. Her salon is in a great area, warm (as I've been to a few freezing ones!!), and has a boutique style as you'd not in many places in the the Burgh. Cheryl has been my hairdresser for the last 10 years in Edinburgh! I have been with her since her days at Cheynes Hairdressing and I have followed her from salon to salon as I just LOVE how she cuts and colours my hair! She has had me blonde, pink, red, purple and now copper! Everytime I have been pleased with the results. Prices good and a good range of Paul Mitchell products in stock too. Cheryl offers evening appointments which is great if you work 9 to 6 like most people. She has been on Argyle Place for over 3 years now. She was the hairdresser 2 doors down in Bodywell Therapy, but now she has opened up her own salon, a nicer and brighter space which she has done up fantastic! Highly recommend a visit! Cheryls been doing my hair for around two years now and today I visited her shiny new salon for the first time! Cheryl is very welcoming and accommodating and there is a lovely relaxed atmosphere. You can go there for a few pamppampering hours out of a busy week and come out feeling transformed! After moving to Edinburgh this year, I really had no idea where to look for a new hairdresser. I had the same hairdresser back home in Ireland for years. I seen Cheryl's hair salon one day and noticed she advertised she was a trained colour technician. My roots were in dire need of a colour. I walked in and booked an appointment. I have to say she was fantastic. She got the colour perfect for my roots, blending it in with my other hair colour and she also had a great student rate (which is always a plus). She had the perfect mix of humour, efficiency and, of course, skill. And she doesn't make a bad cup of tea either :-). Cheryl has been my hairdresser for over 10 years now and always does an amazing job. Following a serious illness, I had to have surgery on my head and when I was ready to have my hair cut again, she didn't make a big deal about it at all but instead made me feel very comfortable which is exactly what I wanted. Her new salon in Marchmont is absolutely lovely, really smart but she makes you feel very at home. Her prices are extremely reasonable and she is incredibly flexible when it comes to making appointments, she's very happy to work round you and your commitments. As there has been no male reviews on here yet i felt it important to give some insight. I am fussy with my hair cut and have always travelled miles home to get my hair done as I have never been completely satisfied with my hair cut from other hairdressers, until now. Cheryl is a great hairdresser, she listens to want you want and takes time to ensure you are happy with what she is doing throughout. The salon itself has a personal, independent and boutiquey feel to it which makes you feel much more relaxed than in larger hairdressing salons which tend to churn as many people through the doors as they can... happy that I have found a new hairdresser in Edinburgh! read more

Cheryl's been doing my hair for over 10 years now and I just wouldn't go anywhere else. I was in to see her yesterday and am so pleased she's now got her own lovely salon - what a gorgeous wee place! I may have taken more than my share of biscuits when I was in though; sorry Cheryl. The main reason I've kept going back is that she's so brilliant at getting my colour just right and always makes sure I'm happy with both my colour and cut. Now that she has her own place she's able to be really flexible so, even though she understandably gets booked up really quickly, she always tries to find a time to suit you. I have been going to Cheryl to cut my hair for 7 years now and whenever i have to get my hair cut from someone else I immediately regret it. She knows hair like nobody else and always does a fantastic job. It doesn't hurt that she is also a lovely person who makes you feel welcome in her salon (coffee and biscuits abound!). She is incredibly flexible time-wise and her prices are super cheap especially compared with most of Edinburgh's overpriced hairdressers. Plus, she does a much better job in my opinion. I discovered Cheryl's place by chance, while walking up Argyle Place last spring. I just popped in to see if I could get a haircut and have been coming back since then. I have now moved to London, but am not rushing to find a hairdresser here. Instead, whenever I need a haircut, I make sure I phone Cheryl next time I go to Edinburgh (luckily, I come to Edinburgh once a month at least!). I've had some really bad experiences trying to find a hairdresser. My friend recommended Cheryl. I phoned her a few hours before a party, begging for a last minute appointment due to an attempted self haircut going terribly wrong. She managed to fit me in, not only she fixed my hair but created a new look for me and gave me a few tips on how to style it. She listened and worked with me to achieve an amazing haircut. I chanced upon Cheryl through a KGB deal a couple of years ago and I'm very glad I did, she's a real keeper. She keeps my dark roots in check with lovely blonde shades and charges competitive prices. she also is really flexible and can work around busy schedules. There's excellent chatter in the shop and I always seem to find a great stash of biscuits or choccies. You've got to treat yourself at the hairdressers, right? Basically you get a super professional do with friendly service and as many cups of tea as your heart desires. The magazines are great too! read more
