I've already got a fine thick slice of Compte from a stall at the market, and I'm glad I didn't go overboard buying cheese there, because rearing its lovely head as I exit The Drinks Room, is Cheeses in Warwick.
Hereford Hop and Lincolnshire Poacher are two reasons to embrace British cheese and there's the option to do that here. I buy a variety of Red Leicester ,which like Sparkenhoe is a proper example, but this one is a more creamy and less earthy tasting. (Forgive me, I've forgotten the name; I'll go back soon to make a note of it!)
French cheeses are well represented, and hello, they have Munster. This is a love or hate cheese which I dare you to try. Some say it tastes like strong and gamey meat. Others say it tastes like the smell of dog dirt. Moving on...
I don't know about you, but if I'm buying quality cheese that costs around £3 for 100 grams, then I want the full flavour of the cheese, so I eat it as is. For those that want an accompaniment in the form of a posh cracker or chunky chutney then Cheeses In Warwick will do you proud. Varieties of crackers, (chive, fennel and chilli), all sit on the counter with their neighbours chilli jam, mango chutney and onion relish, who have quaintly home-made labels on them.
The staff are happy to help and will offer you a taste before you buy, or in my case a little chunk to keep me going until I got home! read more
