I am one of the newer students here just started this month I am one of the We Defy Foundation…read morescholarship sponsors. Being my first year out of the Army, I have found it hard at times fitting in. So far, I may not know everyone but all the instructors and others training here have made me feel welcome and finally a part of something bigger than myself again which I really need right now. So excited for what this year brings training in BJJ.

We enrolled our son (9) and daughter (12) at this academy a little over a year ago and it's…read morehonestly been one of the best decisions we've ever made. The entire team has been instrumental in our children's success, both on the training mat and at competitions. My wife and I were both multi-sport athletes, but neither of us ever practiced or competed in combat sports so while we weren't sure what to expect, we both understood what effective teaching/training looked like. From the first day, it was evident that the team was focused on developing comfort and confidence in the new students. They were both immediately assigned to an experienced student who made them feel relaxed and walked them through both the drills and lessons over the next few days. They quickly went from being a little scared of joining a class full of students with varied experience levels to requesting to attend class every day of the week. Of all the extracurricular activities they had tried, this was the one that ignited their passion the most. The professor, Tom Cronin, and the entire team of coaches do an excellent job of keeping the kids engaged by balancing expectations with both fun and recognition. They have a great sense of each student and how to motivate them to excel. They also steer clear of pitfalls we were warned of by friends who have children attending other academies, specifically promotions based on attendance as opposed to merit. At this gym, the children are evaluated on their skills and ability to execute the requisite moves. This encourages them to excel instead of just casually participating. Within 9 months they had developed enough confidence to compete and we were blown away at how well they performed against the competition from around the country. Most importantly, they had a coach prepare them the week before with one on one training and he was the one who attended the competition to coach both of them through all of their matches. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly for us, the academy doesn't just teach them BJJ, it reinforces core behaviors that we expect from our children - Respect, honor, and community. At the end of the day, we are all trying to raise the best humans we can and I can say with absolute confidence, that this academy is an integral part of that process for our children. I absolutely recommend Carlson Gracie, Temecula to anyone with any interest in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu.

My son has been in Jiu jitsu since he was four years old (has been training for 7 years). As soon…read moreas he turned four he was enrolled. We enrolled him @gb72escondido , he had always been with Gracie Barra. When he began he was trained by @georgekellyking and @gorilla_hands for the first two years. Then for the remainer of the time he was trained by @gorilla_hands, @_dandsd , @gn72escondido all professors ( not coaches) my son loved and still loves jiu jitsu. They did have coach @jreyes0331 on the mat. We purchased a property in Murrieta, we continued to drive him to Escondido for training... until it became too difficult because of his school schedule and traffic. We were offered for him to be picked up and brought back to and from Escondido by 2 of his trainers one being the owner. We thought about the offer but he wouldn't be home till late. We decided to take him to Gracie Barra Lake Elsinore, even though we had been warned by a trainer and a coach. We also had two other parents tell us it wasn't a good idea. We tried anyway, we figured it's a franchise... how different can it be? Let me tell you, it was very different. We made a huge mistake in taking him here. Everything we had been told turned out to be true. I am only talking about the youth class, I cant speak about the adult class... it doesn't apply to me. The facility is clean. As far as the training, things are done very different here. To start off the professor has some ladies running the place. These ladies I assume are parents that have been there a little too long (one of the 5 star reviews on here is from one of the ladies). The professor pretends to be too busy to speak to you, unless you are someone from his little circle. He has no respect for others and carries himself as if he's better than anyone else. He is a very arrogant person and I do not think he should teach. He is only on the mat about 10% or less of the time. He has only coaches on the mat for about 90% of the time. I had a concern regarding one of the coaches (older man), I tried to talk to the professor about it and when I did he smiled (like a smirk) as if making fun of me. Then proceeded to tell me "what was wrong with my child" and how he didn't like taking instructions... ¡How would the professor know this if he doesn't spend the time on the mat or getting to know the children!. The conversation didn't go well, I did tell him "you might be the professor but I am the mother". After this he would give me a look everytime I was there. Previously to this, we had never had an issue with any professor... ever. * what I spoke to him about: He has a coach on the mat who is a parent to two of the children (a girl and a boy). He is supposed to be training all of the children, not just his own (the boy). He is completely focused on his child (only on the boy). Whenever they would do take downs he would be with his child, and would get upset if his child was "loosing". He almost seemed obsessed about it, I caught him making a couple of comments under his breath to my son. When this happened both my husband and I began to pay extra attention to the situation when we would take him for training. We waited a couple of weeks just to make sure I wasn't reading the situation wrong. I wasn't, once I was sure I brought it up to the professor. Then it became like a challenge... as now purposely my son would get paired with the coaches child and the coach would be right there. The only thing we did here was waste time and money. Know that if you go here you will loose alot of time and money. The stripes have a timeline that he does not follow... if you don't believe me call franchise or research it. You will also be an outsider unless you decide to get into his little circle and be a follower. I wish things would have been different. We ended up pulling him out before our contract ended... we decided to pay even though we would no longer be taking him. We contacted his original professors and they were upset about the situation, because they do have a bond with my son. They spoke to a professor (world champ) near us, he contacted us, he is back to training, advancing and learning from the best and things are great. Why I am giving one star is because of Amber. She is also a coach. She is very nice and is good with children. She takes the time with them and is patient.

My other son has competed in some pretty big tournaments. Overall don't think on it, do it. The professors here are great, the kids have their favorites but even so they enjoy every class. Get your children in jiu-jistu, you can thank me later. I'm going to comment on the other person that made a whole review on their first visit. There are actual professors teaching. Most compete themselves. Also yes there are adult volunteers kinda like a teachers assistant. Or other teens that have time being there and they ask to help out. If you call them before just showing up, someone will be there waiting for you. They will explain everything. They will give you the 411, and how it works. This only applies for your first time. And also it's NOT a scam, yes there are promotions. They promote according to age and or experience. If the child is learning they will get promoted. Yes you will have to pay for the new belt. And yes your contract renews depending on what you signed up for. It's your job to cancel if you don't want to continue. They are also a vendor with some homeschool charters. You can use your certificates here. Your child will not stay a white belt forever.

This review is based on my first impression/ visit. Everything seems welcoming which is great. But…read morewhen I went, there was no clear delineation of when a class began and ended, so unorganized. No one helped us at the front desk. Another parent helped my daughter get onto the floor. She joined the class and it was hard to distinguish where she belonged. The website says you'll be taught by this coach with experience but in reality it's parent volunteers who are assisting. I also saw a teenager helping out. There was no warmups or jumping jacks or sitting in a circle to get to know each other as I've experienced. My 8 year daughter began to spar and you can see there's kids who take it seriously and others who play around, my daughter being more the latter, and I don't think you should put those against each other. My daughter hurt her neck for about 3-4 days and she was fine after. But I let the woman who runs the place know and she never responded. We were texting about coming for a second intro class with her and she's fast to respond, but when I mentioned these other things she left me on "read" and I never heard back. The lack of encouragement to continue to try or even ask about my little one showed me all I need to know about this place. It's a shame because I really wanted to like this place and come here. They seem friendly but are unorganized and not very helpful and like a previous review mentioned it's parent volunteers teaching Jiu-Jitsu so maybe that's why my daughter got hurt because a professional coach would have caught that she's making a bad move on her neck, not a random parent. And I'm paying money to have a professional teach her. I would seriously reconsider coming here just due to the lack of encouragement or even concern. Just my opinion.
