Food options were limited and underwhelming. Rides were decent. Will give it one more shot next year.

The highlight of our summer in Traverse City! Thank you Michael Moore for bringing…read morethought-provoking documentaries, independent films, and foreign films to our great small town! Hands down, the Film Festival blows the National Cherry Festival out of the water. Just Great Films!!

Every summer, I look forward to the Traverse City Film Festival (often referred to fondly as TCFF…read morein my family). Without a doubt, this is one of the most amazing events of the year in an already beautiful city. Even though Michael Moore is one of the founders, this film festival has proven to be incredibly diverse in its selection. The movies range from comedy to drama, action to horror. There are documentaries that will open your eyes to a whole new walk of life, there are moves that make you think about where your life is going. Some movies will make you laugh one minute, and have you in tears the next. Some might think, so why TCFF over Cannes or Sundance? Traverse City is just a normal town, with normal people. You don't need to be a celebrity to get tickets, or even to see other celebrities. There are events all over town, including places for children to go while the adults attend movies. There are panels, consisting of some of the directors, producers and actors in the movies, helping answer some pressing questions. The first year of the film festival, there was a fear that it would have the theme of "Bowling for Columbine" or "Farenheit 911", but I have gone for 5 years and never seen a political film (by choice). Between the FREE movies at the Open Space (including the Dark Knight and Mrs. Doubtfire), and the vast array of movies, this festival is definitely a family fun vacation and an educational experience! Five stars isn't enough!

What a ride! Seriously, Zoo-de-Mac is a bike ride that starts at Zoo Bar in Boyne Highlands,…read moreMichigan and ends at Mackinaw City, Michigan. From start to finish the ride is 51 scenic miles along the coast of Lake Michigan and through the beautiful countryside. Before this ride I had not ridden more than 15 miles at a time, so needless to say, I kicked the day off on a nervous foot. Rolling up on my bike, I quickly scoped out my riding companions. The age ranges were all over the board and it appeared that bikers from all expert levels were on deck. The beginning of the ride is the most challenging. Be warned that there are several consecutive hills. After about the first 10-15 miles the road levels out and you are riding alongside the lake. The route offers several stops to use the restroom and grab a drink. Given the leisurely nature of the ride, you'll often see participants stopping along the route to fix a bike, take a break, or have a beer. The ride is very relaxing and there is no competition to get to the finish line first. This is great experience for all riders and the feeling of accomplishment at the end cannot be beaten!

First time doing the 50 mile zoo de Mac ride and I was not impressed at all. $68 for registration…read moreand $28 for the shuttle back. I was very disappointed that lunch was a cold turkey and cheese sandwich or PB&J, chips a banana and granola bar. Did not expect a cold sandwich on a 50 degree day with 22 mph winds. What about a warm lunch instead? Not enough pit stops or safety patrols on staff. They did give out free water at the 26 mile mark which was ok, could of had more pit stops. I was hoping for a more scenic view with water but that didn't last long since it was basically woods and wind tunnels. Basically paid for the city cops to block off the road. I probably will no do this ride again, learned from then older veterans that you can just actually park your car somewhere and ride right in. Such a disappointment.
