The town is mostly known as a college town because it is home to Arizona State University. There is a lot to see and do here. I have seen Tempe grow and change so much over the years. Including damming the Salt River to form Tempe Town Lake and the addition of the Valley Metro Light Rail. Tempe is named for the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece. Arizona State University was established in 1885 and was called Territorial Normal School back then. There are a few buttes around the city like Twin Buttes, Hayden Butte and the buttes over at Papago Park (by the zoo). Hayden Butte is also known as A-Mountain and is located next to ASU. I love climbing A-Mountain in evenings when the city lights come on. I also enjoy running around Tempe Town Lake every Sunday morning with the Hundred Mile Brewing Company running group. I grew up going up to ASU football games. It is a longtime tradition of mine to grab a burger at The Chuck Box before a game. The Chuck Box has been around over fifty years and makes a really good burger. Mill Avenue is a popular hangout spot for the college crowd because of its many bars and restaurants. Back in the 1990s, it was a popular place to cruise up and down on before the cops clamped down on it. I had my first legal drink at a bar on Mill Ave when I turned twenty-one. Rula Bula Irish Pub and Coffee Plantation were my longtime hangout spots on Mill Avenue for many years before they closed up. Tempe Town Lake is a popular place for events like the Innings Festival that takes place during Spring Training. They are also the home of the 9/11 Healing Field where they set up flags for every person that died during that tragedy. There have also been a number of big events and concerts over at Sun Devil Stadium. They hosted the Super Bowl in 1996. The annual Pat's Run is the largest run in the state and takes place in Tempe and finishes inside the stadium. Tempe is home to lots of great places to eat. Four Peaks Brewing Company is another longtime Tempe favorite of mine and is a popular place to hang out during sporting events. I love going there and grabbing a Kilt Lifter or a Pumpkin Porter on occasions. Tempe has a couple of shopping malls - Tempe Marketplace and Arizona Mills. I might be biased, but I think Tempe has a lot to offer. It has its bad spots like most places. But even when I was living in other cities, I always enjoyed coming back to Tempe to visit. If you want to learn more about the city, the Tempe History Museum is free and has some great exhibits that explore Tempe's past and present.

The Tempe Lake was so much fun to visit, it's a perfect walk and you get to cross some bridges and sidewalk trails. You get a good view of Tempe's skyline. I love the shopping hub near ASU's campus. There's plenty to do and explore, I love that ASU doesn't takeover but enhances the downtown area. The sports arenas/facilities are cool to see, I got excited! There's also tons of eateries in Tempe, we passed up a ton of them on our way to the lake. You also NEED to try the coffee at Brick Road it's amazing! Parking isn't too bad in Tempe, it's a little difficult to find but fees are decent. Parks are clean and people generally have a good attitude unlike other places (I'm looking at you Scottsdale). Overall, Tempe seems like a welcoming, progressive, and friendly place to live. If you're a kind, chill person, you should be fine.

He doesn't put up just anything, so there, we do have a winner! In addition to maps, there are some three part brochures on local tourist attractions, a small (really small) selection of gifts (no vending section ie cold drinks/snacks), a few local magazines to peruse and some kiosks linked to Arizona visitor information websites. The couple times we visited here, Gloria was manning the desk and was as nice and helpful as could be. The space here is industrial and open and the picnic bench and campfire and Adirondack chairs and table are a nice touch. There is exercise equipment here? The weight machines, I tried these...and they're stiff. Somewhat and odd feature, but per Gloria, an individual in charge (I have forgotten this person's title) wanted them available to visitors, so there they are. More subjectively speaking...something's missing...what is it? Usually I'd award "five-stars" for "off the beaten path" but I think that's where you'd prefer a visitor center be located - somewhat on the beaten path. I think of other visitor's centers - Sedona, for example - and there's an energy there because you have other people coming and going more frequently. Also, the visitor's center there is in the heart of Sedona so you feel more of the energy of the place. It also has a certain vibe that this location lacks for me. This visitor center has been up here 18 months (having moved from downtown Phoenix.) It gets the job done but feels a little out of place.

When I visited Arizona it was by car driving in from Southern California. I was kind of scared because I hadn't been to a state with that much desert. Arizona is a beautiful state. I just prefer a different climate. If I return I'd fly into Phoenix. I'd feel more comfortable I'm sure.

ADOT had closed down nearby I-10 and everyone who was on the freeway was now driving all over this area and there was nobody directing traffic and no assistance from local police.
