Two weeks ago, I received a call from Chase Bank at 10pm on a Wednesday night. The representative tells me there is some suspicious activity on my account and asked me where was the last place I used my card. Then she asked me if I spent $85 at a Shell station, and then another $12 at the same Shell station. I replied "no" to both as it was not me. The Rep tells me not to worry the card is canceled and I would not be held responsible for these charges. I thanked her for the call.
A week later I noticed that the charges were reversed...in other words, I was charged the $89 and the $12. I called Chase...after being transferred a few times, because I would not accept their reasoning for the decision, I finally spoke with a Rep in the "escalations" department. This Rep informs me that Chase investigation has determined that the charges could had been made by me. Of course, I got a bit upset. The Rep wanted me to prove it wasn't me, I asked how? The Rep tells me, you will need to prove you were somewhere else when these charges occurred. Again, I asked how? I was in bed.
We went on for a while longer, but here is Chase Banks' reasoning for basically accusing me of trying to defraud them out of $97. I asked a few questions: keep in mind that I never lost my card, it was always in my possession.
1. Was my card swiped?
Reply: No, the number was inputted and ran for approval. (which means the thief had to go inside)
2. Was the security chip used?
Reply: No
3. Was my pin used?
Reply: No
4. Are these not your security measures to make sure things like this do not happen?
Reply: Yes
5. However, Chase is assuming I made the charges based on what?
Reply: Based on your spending habits and your frequency of shopping at this Shell Station in your local area.
As it stands, I am out $97! Chase Bank apparently doesn't hold its vendors responsible for not doing their due diligence of checking for an ID and the millions Chase Bank spends on the Chipped cards and security procedures is worthless, but Chase Bank has no problem accusing their own customers of fraud.
Thank you, Chase Bank, for supporting our local thief's! read more
