There are 7 offices of NWCB in Litchfield county, and we are under the umbrella of CMHC Connecticut Mutual Holding Company with 2 other community banks - Litchfield Bancorp and Collinsville Savings Society. Honestly, a 100% better experience than any commercial or competitor bank, we offer generally competitive and sometimes lower rates, less fees, one-on-one NO-FEE customer service with happy customers. A much easier and hassle free way of managing personal, and business banking. The only pitfall is that we have local ATM's, and restricted locations! Great if you're settled down in the area, but we do accommodate to travel and have dedicated customers throughout the country.

I had a very disappointing experience with this bank's fraud department. After reporting what I…read morebelieved to be fraudulent DraftKings transactions, I was contacted by the fraud team and told the activity was suspicious. I was issued provisional credits while the investigation was underway. Without proper notice, those credits were later reversed after my claim was denied. The funds were removed on a Thursday before a bank closure and limited Saturday hours, leaving my family of four with very little money for food, gas, and basic necessities for the week. What was most frustrating was the lack of communication. I spent days trying to get answers, being transferred between departments and unable to speak with someone who could explain the decision. I was eventually told by a Vice President of Fraud that I should never have received the provisional credits in the first place. The entire experience left me feeling as though my concerns were not taken seriously and that my honesty was being questioned. Whether a claim is approved or denied, customers deserve timely communication, transparency, and access to support when their finances are affected. I hope the bank reviews its fraud procedures and improves the way it communicates with customers facing these situations.

When opening an account at a bank, I've always sat down with someone to go over the different types…read moreof accounts based on my needs. This didn't seem to be the case when my 20yr old son mustered up all his courage to go into Webster and open an account for himself. He has extreme social anxiety and high functioning autism. There are only certain places he's comfortable going on his own. He walked to Webster Bank a few times before going inside with $250 cash to open an account. I was so proud of him, I didn't think to look over what he signed (yes, that's my fault). Turns out, the account he opened was a checking account with a monthly fee, unless he had direct deposit. He doesn't have a job, and I know they asked him if he did because they selected unemployed in his record. The fee is $12/month... for an account with $250 in it. Then somehow another $2 was added to that for not going "paperless", and another $5 for inactivity. This bank opened an account for a kid who very clearly had no steady income, and thought it was the right choice for him? As of today, his account has been drained by Webster. What started as a courageous $250 deposit turned to $0. When I found this out, I took him to the bank to see if there was anything we could do to recover the money. I was told at most, $75 could be reimbursed....BUT only if he opened a new account since his closed from inactivity and $0 balance. I was told they no longer offer free accounts without direct deposit...the best they have is a savings account with $300 minimum. If he closes the account early, there would be a penalty. So, in order to get $75 of HIS money back, we'd have to deposit an additional $225. Not a chance. A comment was also made that even though he's unemployed and doesn't have an income for direct deposit, "he DID have a lump sum of cash to deposit". Saving $250 from Christmas and birthdays does NOT mean he wants to spend it on bank fees. I'd hoped that whoever helped my son open an account that day would have recognized his anxiety and shown some kindness in directing him. I'm sure he stumbled over questions, and can't provide his address or ss# without looking at his cards in his wallet. ANY young adult opening an account for the first time should be guided through the process so they understand. Instead, my son must have looked like a walking dollar sign. Unrelated to this incident, there was no line (I wonder why), and the teller was courteous and quick when closing out my other account as requested. However, I was hoping to sit down with someone to discuss my son's account rather than stand at the desk for everyone to hear my business. The manager was behind a door and didn't show his or her face at all. We were there at 3:30 (I called first and set up a time to come in), and at least 4 times we were reminded that they were closing soon (5pm). Whether it was because the manager was leaving at 4, or someone else was gone for the day, or talking between coworkers that "I'm with a customer so I'm done after this"... This visit fell very short of what I expect in a bank.

Recently however, helping out a friend, I have had to frequent the Simsbury, CT Hopmeadow Street branch. What an unexpected and pleasant surprise. While some lament the single teller and occasional wait in line, I beg to differ. My continued experience reminds me of the adage, "good things are worth waiting for"! Teller Frederick "Fred" Winfield is an absolute pleasure. Keeping customers engaged as he tends to their banking needs. If I could only get him to call me by my first name and not Miss Hayes, he'd still be equal the gentleman. Troops are only as good as their leader. Bank Manager Madeline Montanez, has been the gift that keeps on giving. Her professionalism, knowledge and attention to detail are a thing to marvel. I am amazed at her ability to simultaneously address multiple clients, leaving none to feel neglected. She has assisted me with the friend I help in countless ways. As a bank officer and Notary during a meeting with an attorney. As a friend walking outside coatless in the cold to get a signature so gentleman with ambulatory concerns would not have to come inside. Thank You Madeline and Fred for enlightening me, resulting in the 180° turnaround of my BOA assessment, at least its Hopmeadow Steet, Simsbury, Connecticut location.

The screen then…read moresaid Temporarily Out of Service and proceeded to make a noise like it was going to spit out my ATM card. Never gave me back my card. I called Hartford FCU just after they opened so they could go get my card. I was informed that my American Eagle FCU was a foreign card and it was shredded. They shredded my card within 12 mins of them opening at 9:00. How is another local credit union's card a foreign card? Once a Bank of America ATM ate my card and they were able to get it back to me. With no problems. Why can't this tiny CU? Thanks a lot Hartford Federal Union. Based on this experience and the personality of the person I spoke with I would never use them as a bank. DO NOT use their ATMs. This was their fault and now I have to wait 7-10 days to get a new card from my bank.
