Hot on the heels of…read moreputting an offer in on a local property (what a beautiful area this is) the in-laws and I decamped to Hillier Garden Centre for tea, cakes and purchased a load of plants to upgrade our respective gardens. Nicely laid out, there's a good balance between mid range and the more expensive statement plants, statues, herbs, summer houses, the ubiquitous smart garden centre foodie treats (ideal for presents) and a smart open plan eatery with seating spilling outside, adjacent to a series of summer houses. Take inspiration from the £900 wisteria enveloping an unusual wooden pagoda and enjoy the very tasty food. One thing is for sure, if I move locally I'll be conducting my business meetings here. As an added bonus the staff were very friendly and helpful too

We did ask for help after not finding anything in the Watering & Irrigation section, and were pointed to a small section near the tills. We actually came away with a water mat solution from the outdoor plant section. The centre also has an air conditioned restaurant and home section.

Frosts is the large garden centre at Millet's Farm, near Abingdon. It stocks a large range of…read moreplants, from cacti and houseplants (including some lovely pitcher plants, hanging from the ceiling) to shrubs and fruit trees. They have the usual seasonal ranges of bedding plants, etc, as well as gardening tools and containers. They also stock hard landscaping items such as fence panels and paving slabs, pond liners and pumps. And fish - both for ponds and for aquariums - and animal foods for pets and wildlife. There's also a stock of conservatory furniture and large play equipment. Beyond that they also sell a large range of non-gardening products, including books and clothes, candles and homewares. They set up a special Christmas shop in the autumn and there's a new cafe on site. You can become a member of the Frosts gardening club to save money on your purchases if you're a regular customer. They also invite you to special events - exclusive shopping evenings, talks and visits.
