When I became pregnant with #3, I knew I wanted to have a water birth. I toured UVA's L&D asking the nurses about the tub. They told me the policy was I could only labor in the tub, when it came time to push I'd have to get out. That sounded awful to me. The nurse could tell I wasn't ok with that so she recommended I use the midwife "we all use- Kelly Sicoli" I was immediately interested that the nurses (& later I found out physicians) at a top hospital use Kelly. Both my husband & I are in healthcare ourselves & we were concerned because "what if something goes wrong at home?" the first time I spoke with Kelly on the phone she calmed all my fears. She brings everything from IV fluids, meds, suction, etc with her to the delivery. We were on board! The prenatal visits were wonderful! I was never rushed out of the room for the next patient, Kelly was never late because she was busy with another patient. My appointments lasted longer because we went over more things in more details. I suffer from terrible migraines, Kelly helped make sure those were staying controlled during the pregnancy. I was very appreciative how detailed our birth plan was because then there was no room for error or surprise. (such as making sure I had a facet connector for my water hose because I sure wouldn't have thought about that!) Kelly even had me print my medical chart in case we had to go to UVA so that we could hand it right over & the team would have all the information they needed. It was wonderful being able to directly contact Kelly whenever I had questions or concerns, not calling an office & leaving messages for a nurse who doesn't even know me to call me back. Even late at night, Kelly would text me back when I started having braxton hicks & gave me suggestions on how to relieve them. The day my water broke, I wasn't having any contractions. We didn't rush anything. Kelly gave me suggestions on how to get contractions started but didn't come to my house until things were in full swing which was nice being able to walk my neighborhood & do what I wanted to do during the slow period. Once my contractions were regular & closer together, Kelly & Sara came to my house & immediately got the pool set up & checked my baby & me. They made sure I was eating & drinking (which was so wonderful since in the hospital they don't want you to in case you have a c-section). While Kelly & Sara were setting up, I got to labor in my bed, in my clothes, snuggle up to my pillows, it was much better experience being in my own home with my things (plus who wants to be in a hospital during covid?) Once I got into the pool, Kelly continued to check my baby's heart but never checked to see how dilated I was (because all women know how uncomfortable that is!) it was wonderful being able to just let my body do what was natural & felt right to me. I was able to get in whatever position I wanted, Kelly & Sara respected whatever I requested. After he was born, they cleaned up everything, I didn't have to worry about anything! Sara helped me get in the shower, Kelly started a medical chart for my son which was great to be able to hand to the pediatrician. The pediatrician was impressed with the details in my son's medical chart. Kelly checked on me a lot in the following days which was very nice. After a hospital birth, you're basically forgotten about. She checked on my bleeding, how breastfeeding was going, and my mood. I believe the water truly helped during delivery. I delivered on a Monday, by Wednesday/Thursday I felt like nothing had happened down there. Yes, I was still bleeding like a normal period but there was no swelling, soreness, tenderness, nothing. I was back to my normal self & out walking the dog that same week. While at this moment I don't plan on having more children, but if I do, I 1000% would use Kelly again. read more

I gave birth at home this summer with Kelly Sicoli and her assistant midwife Sara by my side. I transitioned to Charlottesville Midwifery when I was around 20 weeks along, mostly due to fears around COVID and birthing in a hospital at that time. The experience that Kelly provided was so much more than I could have imagined. Having given birth in a hospital previously with my first baby, and having been to two different practices in Charlottesville before transitioning to her care with this pregnancy, I can confidently say that what Kelly offers is so much more personalized and empowering than any care that I found elsewhere. In all three of the OB practices I previously attended, I was rotated through a stream of practitioners who would not have recognized me on the street and who I typically only spent 10-15 minutes with during my visits. In comparison, Kelly provided extremely personalized care. Appointments were typically an hour + of 1:1 time and individualized care and attention to the specific needs of me and my baby. She was always available via phone or text if I had any questions or concerns. She provided holistic support in addition to medical guidance, providing me with information about diet, supplements, and stretches to support my baby's growth and positioning, as well as personal support around the complicated emotions of birthing during a pandemic. The beauty of Kelly's practice is that I did not feel like I had to compromise safety or medical expertise in order to birth at home or have individualized care. She has a gentle, confident presence with medical expertise to match. I hemorrhaged following my birth, and Kelly acted decisively in providing me with multiple different lines of defense to stop the bleeding, which allowed me to safely avoid transfer to the hospital. She is also able to write prescriptions and to communicate directly with other medical providers, which came in handy at multiple points. I had fears around having a large baby at home (since my first was over 9lbs), and I was able to deliver a 9lb8oz baby (in the middle of an incredible storm with a confirmed tornado touch down minutes from my house...) safely with her guidance. Despite all of this, I healed much, much faster than I did with my first baby, both physically and mentally. If you are considering a home birth, I cannot recommend Kelly enough. read more

Kelly is an exceptional midwife and my homebirth with her is one of the best experiences of my life. I had always imagined giving birth in hospital, but when I became pregnant, a little part of me was curious about doing it at home. A friend of mine had worked with Kelly and spoke of her very highly, so my partner and I decided to meet her. In that first meeting I was struck by how personal the experience seemed. Where the OB I had met with had taken a bunch of tests and rattled quickly through how everything would work (including the fact that I would see a different Dr at every appointment and may give birth with someone I had never met before), Kelly took a lot of time, not only talking us through everything, but also getting to know us. I just felt calm and safe with her, which was exactly how I wanted to feel when it eventually came time to give birth. I knew in my bones that Kelly was the right choice. Throughout the pregnancy, I was struck by her warmth and patience. As first time parents both my partner and I valued the space she made in appointments for us to discuss anything we were feeling unsure of. By the time I went into labour, I felt prepared and confident, even excited. Yes, labour was hard! But it was also wonderful. Kelly and her assistant Sara were with me all the way. I was able to labour in my own space, moving around the house and even out onto the porch for a while to watch the rain pouring down and get some fresh air. My daughter came into the world in a pool in our living room at 2 in the morning. I came out of her birth with a new confidence in myself, my body and my child which made for a great start to parenthood. I am so glad that I decided to do it at home: something I would only have done with someone I trusted as deeply as Kelly. I recommend her to anyone interested in home birth. read more

We had a fantastic experience working with Kelly from start to finish! We sought her out because she is so experienced and well integrated into the medical community, and so many friends had recommended her. We had excellent prenatal care and I felt so much more relaxed and comfortable having my appointments in Kelly's home office- particularly in the age of covid. She has great partnerships with other local providers so that our anatomy screening with another OB was seamless; she dealt with all the lab work and tests and clearly explained results to us. She is a great listener and has a great deal of evidence-based information to share about nutrition, various screenings and choices we needed to make, home birthing supplies, postpartum care and breastfeeding support. I felt really empowered by the information and grateful for her time in explaining and listening to concerns. Our homebirth was an incredible experience. Our son came quickly after a brief and intense labor. Kelly and her birth assistant Adelaide were fantastic support. Both were really intuitive and able to offer suggestions and hands-on support, and to give me space as needed. They were so calm and efficient and helped me stay steady, present, and focused through the delivery. Once our son was born they did a wonderful job of checking both him and me while helping us maintain as much skin to skin contact as possible. I felt so incredibly cared for. They checked us, cleaned everything up, stayed with us until we got settled, and then came back for several postpartum visits so that we could just stay home and rest before needing to venture out to the pediatrician's office. Kelly and her assistant Sara are the home birth dream team! Thanks to them, my husband and I had the perfect home birth experience with our baby boy. I'm a first-time mom and everyone I know had a hospital birth, and I am so happy I had a home birth with Kelly. It was important to us that she is a nurse midwife and brings that extra skill set and experience to the birth. Both Kelly and Sara simply know what they are doing and I felt I could trust them completely. My prenatal appointments with Kelly were great - she's very competent and educated and answered all my questions. I felt very cared for in way that I could not imagine a hospital with their much greater numbers of pregnant women could even offer. Throughout the labor, they were very supportive, considerate, and sensitive. I was impressed with their "birth choreography" - when it was time to eat/drink, rest, switch positions to progress labor, encourage me etc. - they were very attentive and just knew what I was going to need before I even knew. When it came time for the delivery, Kelly and Sara went from kind and supportive to razor-sharp attention, and acting quickly and confidently with surgical precision. They didn't talk to each other much because they had the entire process down pat. My husband says that seeing them in action right at the end cemented for him that we had gone with the right midwifery team. I worked with Kelly for my prenatal care and the delivery of my first baby and couldn't be more happy with the whole experience and would be eager to work with her again during my next pregnancy! As a new mother and the first in my family to be interested in home birth there was some uncertainty and nervousness around opting out of the conventional medical way to give birth. Kelly, being a skilled nurse practitioner brought some ease the the "what ifs." She was able to do all my blood work, testing, carry medications during labor and she handled it all with ease. She has a real expertise and very sensitive touch. One of the things I like most about Kelly is she won't easily tell you her opinion on things. She gives you the facts and tells you different options, then encourages you to make your own decisions without judgment. This is huge for me. Also the strong knowing she has cultivated, after years of experience, in the body's ability to birth naturally really attracted me. As a chiropractor myself, sharing this principle was something I was looking for. Right when I met Kelly, my husband and I knew we wanted to work with her. If I could give 10 stars, I would. Kelly is amazing. Although this was my second birth, it was my first home birth and it was hard. I say "hard" because my expectations were that it would be easier than my first. It wasn't. But despite this and despite my mindset, I was able to have an amazing home birth experience and this was mostly due to Kelly's guidance and care during labor. Something as intimate as giving birth requires a special kind of person. The situation requires a calm and knowledgeable presence and a tender touch. It requires being completely in tune with the situation but also allowing space for the laboring mom. Kelly provided it ALL. I would be remiss if I don't mention the pre and post natal care which is also quite important. Every interaction I have had with Kelly proves that she is not only a knowledgeable midwife but also a very patient one. She answered all my questions, addressed all my concerns, and treated me and my baby with the utmost respect and care. Without hesitation, if i were to have a third, I would without a doubt want Kelly there to help me. read more

After an unmedicated hospital birth with my first baby, I decided to switch to a home birth with Kelly for my second baby at 30 weeks pregnant and it was the best decision I could have made. As a nurse practitioner myself, it was really important to me to have the skill set and medical privileges of a nurse-midwife attend the birth. We welcomed our sixth child into the world at our home on Jan 11, 2022 under the provision and guidance of Kelly. I felt so cared for, safe, and secure with the calm, professional presence that Kelly brought to the labor and the birth. As I am labor and delivery nurse, I appreciated Kelly's competent, educated, and assertive approach to my birth process. The equipment she brought and had prepared in case of any unexpected events was present but, thankfully, not needed- having it readily available added to the secure environment. I am so glad that I found Kelly to attend my birth. I was seven months pregnant and my hospital-based midwife recommended Kelly when I finally decided that I wanted a home birth. In two brief months, Kelly showed me her competence, empathy and confidence in my ability to have the birth I wanted. She addressed all of my physical and emotional worries in those most difficult months of pregnancy. During my labor, Kelly and Sara emanated calm which allowed me to trust myself and let my body do what it needed to do. They spoke up and assisted only at the perfect times. Our first son was born at home with another midwife (didn't know about Kelly) she moved across country right before I found out I was pregnant again. When you go through the whole pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum care there is a special bond formed. Upon meeting Kelly, she did not compare to my first midwife because we had not gone through the process yet. Each visit I liked Kelly more and more. She went above and beyond. One time we got an outrageous bill for blood work and as self pay patients we opted to find cheaper options going forward. Kelly went ahead and researched and found another place to send the blood work so I could still have the blood work done at my appts and not have to follow up elsewhere (not adding extra things to the to do list is always a major plus). Kelly supported us through two pregnancies and two homebirths, and we could not have dreamed of better experiences. We never considered ourselves "homebirth" people. We delivered our first baby in the hospital, but our second son was due during the height of the first wave of Covid and we just weren't comfortable delivering under the protocols or being in the hospital at that time. Kelly answered all of our (many) questions about the homebirth experience, heard our fears and concerns, and educated us fully on what to expect. Kelly is a wonderful midwife and has been such a blessing to our family. We worked with her for the birth of our second child (firstborn was also a homebirth but not in Cville) and are so grateful for her excellent care. It was the peaceful, private, reassuring, even joyful experience we were desiring (despite being aware of a variation of normal with my placenta and the cord insertion, both of which turned out absolutely fine.) My experience with Kelly was wonderful - she has all my respect and trust. Kelly was my midwife for my fifth baby, and I had previously experienced varying degrees of care with former midwives. My husband and I were delighted to find Kelly because she fulfilled our expectations and more. She is warm, thorough, respectful, informed, and experienced. As my husband and I made choices for our home birth, I really appreciated that Kelly didn't shy away from discussing hard subjects with us.
