Reading has been a passion since I was young. I used to read with a flashlight after "lights out." This library is awesome. You can register for a card, no matter where you live in the DMV. There are lots of online choices (classes, etc) available. The library is cheerful, roomy and easy to find. You can even choose what color card you want. There are activities for kids (and adults). Make sure you use the card at least once a year, to maintain your account.

Also, this library is right by a fenced in playground and a sprayground that is super fun in the summer. A one stop shop! There is a kids section here with some toys for the kids to play and plenty of books. Also, they have crayons and paper available and several kid size tables and even a tiny couch- very cute. There is one designated kids computer as well with headphones! Ms. Karen does the children's programming and hosts a great story time on Thursday mornings from 10:30-11. If you have a little one you should check it out! Stories and songs for kids. Best for the preschool and under crowd. The librarians here are all kind and very helpful. Stop by the front desk for a stamp on your kid's hand! Don't forget about summer reading too. There is a bathroom located in the lobby as well as a vending machine. Highly recommend you check out the Aurora Hills Library if you are in town!

This library closed in March 2020 and never reopened. The only emails we've received from the county library director have been about her favorite Christmas songs and her pet political causes, so she doesn't seem to know or care that people in the community want access to books. The hours for this closed location should be removed because anyone showing up and expecting to use a library will be disappointed. It's just an abandoned building where the county keeps a large container to drop off glass for recycling. (Arlington discontinued curbside recycling pickup of glass in April 2019, so the abandoned library is being used as one of the dropoff sites. Recyclable glass of any color can be dropped off 24/7 in the dumpster-sized bin.)

I really like this little library! If you're familiar with the area, the new site of this library…read morewill be the open field on Beulah/Silver Lake Blvd, but this review is for the current operation. My kids and I come here a few times a week at least, and they are able to find new books every time. We generally check out about 20 items each time, so this is impressive for a smaller library! I'm not familiar with any sections other than reference (that I needed for school work) and YA fiction, but there seems to be a great variety in all genres. They have a lot of study/quiet areas and quiet rooms, and everyone is respectful of others, giving this place a great atmosphere. They regularly display artwork from the local elementary school, which is cool for the kids to see when they go (especially when their own artwork is featured, haha). And there are lots of monthly events, including activities for kids of all ages like book readings and arts and crafts. Overall, a solid choice in Kingstowne.

I've had two uncomfortable incidents at Kingstowne Library, and I'm writing this because I want…read moreother parents to know what to expect -- and because I hope management actually addresses it. The first was at a children's event where staff were taking pictures of the kids. I went to Ms. K to express my concern, and she was dismissive, telling me "it's a public place, pictures can be taken" -- then, in the same breath, said "just talk to the manager, I'm not dealing with this." The manager told me she could try to ask marketing to remove the photos of my child, but made no guarantee. I understand it's a public place, but when a parent asks to have their child's photo removed, especially in the world we live in today, that request should be granted -- not treated as optional. Today (Oct 1), there was a bilingual preschooler storytime. My child isn't a preschooler, but I've brought them to similar events at other libraries with no issue. Just as the event was starting, a staff member came up to me and told me my child couldn't attend because of their age. I don't see the harm in having them there -- it was for exposure. The registration process does list ages, but nowhere does it say you won't be allowed to enter if your child is outside that range -- that was never communicated in advance. Meanwhile, another parent was there with three children, two of whom were clearly under preschool age,and he wasn't told anything. If there's an age limit that will be enforced, it should be stated clearly when you register -- not applied selectively at the door, and not to some families but not others. Two incidents, two dismissals, and inconsistent treatment. I'm left feeling that this library doesn't take parents' concerns seriously -- and I can't help but wonder whether race played a role in how I was treated. I hope Kingstowne Library does better, because families deserve better than this.

I moved to VA from the West Coast; I was at the library for a Toast Masters meeting event. I received a library card at that time. I could not remember how to thread a machine it's been years they gave me the step-by-step information they saw me struggling, because they could not find my card one girl behaved as though I had committed a crime for not having a library card the other was helpful they stood around talking doing nothing while they watched me struggle. I don't know if it's the generation, racism or my high expectation for human kindness. I left without sewing a seam a small tear in my kimono. I came home sewed it by hand and purchased a machine on Amazon so I can teach myself once again. That experienced made me realized I have little patience for superior attitudes and a reminder in my daily activities to be kinder whenever possible it cost us nothing you don't need a card or help just the willingness to be a kind human being.
