Nestling by the side of the River Axe, Forde Abbey is a lovely house and gardens situated on the…read moreSomerset-Dorset border. Founded in 1141, the Abbey survived the dissolution intact through virtue of being sold to the Crown in 1539. After a series of temporary landlords, it was sold to Thomas Prideaux, a supporter of Cromwell, in 1649. What we see now is essentially his conversion of the Abbey to a dwelling - albeit a magnificent one. Much of the original Abbey, featuring late gothic and tudor architecture, survives reasonably intact, such as the Great Hall, Cloisters and Chapter House, cleverly converted to use as a Chapel. The undercroft has frescoes from the 13th/14th century. Prideaux also commissioned a series of comfortable family rooms and bedrooms, with sumptuously decorated ceilings and rich tapestries from the 17th century. Additional furniture and paintings reflect the periods from this time to the 19th century. But Forde is more than just a house: it is famed for its landscaped grounds and gardens, developed in the 18th and 19th centuries respectively, featuring extensive use of water features such as lakes, ponds and streams. Although delightful all year round, they are at their best in high summer.

I love to go at Christmas especially as they have about a million trees decorated and it really gets you in the mood. They sell whole range of christmas decorations at reasonable prices. The cafe is good value but usually very busy. They do everything from tea and a cake to Sausage and chips. Don't forget to visit Joshua's farm shop across the road which is lovely too.

However most people love the variety, and we are talking socks to sculpture and tea pots to tea roses. You need half a day to see it all. Two hours before lunch, which you should take in the very efficient restaurant of course, and an hour after will do you nicely. Great grub to eat and your order appears very quickly, probably due to the busy supervisor who is always checking things are going well. Very refreshing to see someone doing their job properly ! To describe the garden section as 'comprehensive' does not do justice. There seems to be such variety in everything from plants to ponds that most gardeners would surely find anything they needed. Easy free parking, disabled access, most presentations are under cover, staff knowledgeable and helpful. We have watched this business grow for twenty five years and the superb presentation and facilities now are the result of some excellent business decisions by the owner manager who is frequently seen chatting to staff and customers. Congratulations.

There is a large indoor area with all sorts of gardening equipment, plants and seeds. There is everything from bird feeders to garden gnomes. St Bridgets also sell koi and other pond fish. Outside there are more plants, ornaments and accesssories. A very big bonus especially for children is the large koi pond area which is fenced off and children must be supervised but it does have a large viewing platform where children can get to appreciate these wonderful fish. There is also an area which is specifically for gravel and stones, pots and containers and pre made garden ponds. St Bridgets stock most varieties of fish food. I have found their staff always very helpful, with various 'experts' in different fields. There is also a lovely cafe on site.

I highly recommend the nursery and now my friends and children also use it. Over the years I have got to know the staff who have worked there many years and they are always so friendly, helpful and give good advice on garden queries. For the first time I had a problem with a christmas tree after previously purchasing 27 christmas trees there and the service I received to put it right was outstanding.
