There was an impressive amount of things to see and do here! There are multiple viewing areas of the dam and reservoir area. We had come around from Kinzua Point and thus encountered the parking lot along the road near the top of the dam first. The views were great, and the dam was an impressive sight. There is also a restroom facility available in this area. A short walk from the parking lot also revealed an intriguing sign that read, "Smorgasbord Forest 1/3 mile Long Trail to Nature Center," which we decided to explore. It turns out there is a lot of neat stuff on the lower dam section, as well. There were several nice overlooks down there, plus a variety of amenities including picnic tables and grills, a playground with slides, swings, and more, and the aforementioned nature center, called the Big Bend Visitor Center. Unfortunately, the visitor center was labeled closed on our visit with no indication of hours. There is additional parking available on this lower section if one would rather drive there directly, rather than take the trail from the upper section, though part of it was under construction at our visit. The huge rocks are a lot of fun to climb about but beware of rattlesnakes. I was born in the Town of Kinzua which, despite the objections of the Seneca Indian Nation, which had a treaty signed by George Washington covering their sections of land for as long as the grass grew and the sun shined, was broken, and flooded. So, as striking as the view may be, you're looking at yet another despicable act of a broken treaty with an Indian Nation. For the view, 5 Yelp Stars, for its appalling background of perfidy, I'll let you decide. By the way, the lake is commonly known as Lake Perfidy by the indigenous Seneca people.

There are a lot of large rocks and boulders that make for interesting exploration opportunities. There's a narrow staircase that cuts right through the rocks as part of the trail between the beach and the overlook. It was located right smack at the edge of the Allegheny River, perfect for city events such as our annual Rib Fest, Music in the Park and other events as well as general recreation. But then along came the developers promising all sorts of things, making fools and suckers out of the city management with pipe dreams of 24 condo units, geothermal heat and air conditioning, arts centers, new shops and restaurants along with an influx of tourists, tourist dollars and a regular downtown boom of prosperity. Well none of that happened. Only a few shoddily constructed condo units were built, the geothermal thing pretty much of a failure, no arts center, no new restaurants, no new hotels, no new shopping area, no new hotels and no influx of tourists. The result simply being the destruction of what was one of the best parks any small city ever had, gone, destroy and ruined forever. Worse yet, the people of downtown no longer have a decent venue for their events, having to seek places located well outside of what is downtown Warren.

There are pavillions, playgrounds, a learing center with educational events (not during Covid-19), a small store to buy hot prepared food (hotdogs, french fries, etc...), cold drinks and other items. We can enjoy the day without worrying about our eyes swelling shut because the people next to use wont stop smoking and just throwing the butts on the sand. Located on the banks of the Allegheny River at the corner of Hickory and Pennsylvania Avenue and complimented by a music park offering outdoor concerts it offers a taste of history and culture as well as local flavor. From the park one can see the Four Flags, being the American, the flag of the Seneca Nation, the French fleur de lis and the British Union Jack representing each of the governing bodies that now or previously claimed the area as its own. Soldiers and Sailors is indeed a magnificent little piece of green space park for a city to have.
