There was an impressive amount of things to see and do here! There are multiple viewing areas of the dam and reservoir area. We had come around from Kinzua Point and thus encountered the parking lot along the road near the top of the dam first. The views were great, and the dam was an impressive sight. There is also a restroom facility available in this area. A short walk from the parking lot also revealed an intriguing sign that read, "Smorgasbord Forest 1/3 mile Long Trail to Nature Center," which we decided to explore. It turns out there is a lot of neat stuff on the lower dam section, as well. There were several nice overlooks down there, plus a variety of amenities including picnic tables and grills, a playground with slides, swings, and more, and the aforementioned nature center, called the Big Bend Visitor Center. Unfortunately, the visitor center was labeled closed on our visit with no indication of hours. There is additional parking available on this lower section if one would rather drive there directly, rather than take the trail from the upper section, though part of it was under construction at our visit. The huge rocks are a lot of fun to climb about but beware of rattlesnakes. I was born in the Town of Kinzua which, despite the objections of the Seneca Indian Nation, which had a treaty signed by George Washington covering their sections of land for as long as the grass grew and the sun shined, was broken, and flooded. So, as striking as the view may be, you're looking at yet another despicable act of a broken treaty with an Indian Nation. For the view, 5 Yelp Stars, for its appalling background of perfidy, I'll let you decide. By the way, the lake is commonly known as Lake Perfidy by the indigenous Seneca people.

There are a lot of large rocks and boulders that make for interesting exploration opportunities. There's a narrow staircase that cuts right through the rocks as part of the trail between the beach and the overlook. Whichever option you choose, the overlook is gorgeous and worth checking out the view!

What an absolute catastrophic horrid mess! For a while the City of Warren had what was one of the…read moreloveliest parks any city could ever be blessed with having. It was located right smack at the edge of the Allegheny River, perfect for city events such as our annual Rib Fest, Music in the Park and other events as well as general recreation. But then along came the developers promising all sorts of things, making fools and suckers out of the city management with pipe dreams of 24 condo units, geothermal heat and air conditioning, arts centers, new shops and restaurants along with an influx of tourists, tourist dollars and a regular downtown boom of prosperity. Well none of that happened. Only a few shoddily constructed condo units were built, the geothermal thing pretty much of a failure, no arts center, no new restaurants, no new hotels, no new shopping area, no new hotels and no influx of tourists. The result simply being the destruction of what was one of the best parks any small city ever had, gone, destroy and ruined forever. Worse yet, the people of downtown no longer have a decent venue for their events, having to seek places located well outside of what is downtown Warren.

If you're passing through this is an awesome pit stop, but you too may regret not spending an extra…read moreday or two. If you can't stay longer, it'll be a pleasant stop at least. We had a level site, one of their many electric sites, hence got to use our AC during a heatwave. The moderate tree cover was a nice bonus, and we had a Birdseye view of the playground. Perfect! There was no firewood left on site (honor system), but it was hot anyway. Oh well. We snuck in a little hiking before heading out, noticing all the trout in the dam pond and along the boardwalk trail. Whether it was the weekday or a covid closure, we didn't get to peek inside the CCC museum or the ranger station, but interpretive signs were outside the CCC where our little one got to take the decommissioned snowmobile for a (pretend) drive. Having separate swimming ponds and fishing is nice here too. The dump station is conveniently on your way out of the camping loops. It was a great family spot, and in Autumn the foliage is probably divine. If you can, take a couple nights here! Just bring your firewood/groceries/bear spray since there's no nearby amenities.

Been to MANY state parks across the state and have definitely been to better. We arrived and the…read moreweather was not great in early June. (They were calling for a possible tornado and we left early in order to get to the park before the bad wether.) We got there an hour early before check in and our cabin wasn't ready. Fine! We drove around and explored the park. There were booked pavilions with kids birthdays and a couple of graduations. We saw one park ranger with a tactical vest on and couldnt figure out why. We've NEVER seen rangers with those types of vests on especially since he was only walking around checking in with the kids birthday parties and graduations. Seemed totally excessive for the tactile gear. We came back 15 minutes before check in to the office thinking they would give us the key since the horrible weather started and they still told us to come back at 3. It was a torrential downpour and calling for a tornado we were forced to wait in our car for the 15 minutes. Went back in at 3 and they finally gave us our keys. We stayed at a cabin and the bathrooms definitely need a HUGE remodel. Once the rain stopped the ranger in the tacticle gear made it a point to come by our cabin and creep around. We thought that was weird. We stayed 4 nights and every single night the cabin beside our played very loud church music. It started at 6pm and went on until about 10 pm. Every. Single. Night. The whole cabin colony heard it. Quiet hours were to start at 9 pm. No one from the park office ever told them to stop playing their church music. We had no peace and were forced to listen to it for our entire trip every night we were at our cabin. We will not be back to this park. There are plenty of other state parks that are WAY more welcoming than this one.

Located on the banks of the Allegheny River at the corner of Hickory and Pennsylvania Avenue and complimented by a music park offering outdoor concerts it offers a taste of history and culture as well as local flavor. From the park one can see the Four Flags, being the American, the flag of the Seneca Nation, the French fleur de lis and the British Union Jack representing each of the governing bodies that now or previously claimed the area as its own. Soldiers and Sailors is indeed a magnificent little piece of green space park for a city to have.
