David is retiring from his artistic venture. First found his interest from a Chihuly exhibit in Seattle and wanted to see if he could create something. He could and it's on full display in his shop. We have been around for a day or so and we're not sure when it was open. So glad we saw that it was open and visited and learned that he is retiring. Sad to learn this but completely understand at the same time. He has some beautiful art that is affordable for all price ranges. The selection is huge and if you like glass work don't pass this up. He was very helpful, takes credit cards and helped pack our purchase in enough protection for travel. A true artist in Sutter Creek and in my opinion someone worth supporting. Glass artists are not growing in their field they are shrinking. I would rather buy from a living artist than a dead one. This is an A+ glass works. Have this amazing hand created glass globe that I got to remember my husband. My husband's passions were astronomy and physics. It's the most magnificent blue with a few gold balls that look like shooting stars. Along with wee clear glass bubbles that reminds me of the stars within the night sky. It's nestled down a small driveway with minimal signage. The chickens running around belong to the owners, and in their own special way, these birds welcome you into the shop. You'll be met with friendly smiles, as the owners are creating one beautiful piece after another. Anything that you can think of made of glass, can be found here. Doorknobs, wine stoppers, bowls, lighting. Oh the lighting. So many wonderful items to choose from. The colors are varied, and it's like looking at a beautiful rainbow all lit up. So this place is pretty cool. Over subsequent visits, I will probably depart with a lot of money on beautiful glass pieces. I had to restrict myself to just two on this, my first visit ever. I had heard from some friends that we must go to Sutter Creek and that we must go to Chaos Glass, too. We finally did and I think now every time that we visit this area that we will be stopping in. There is a vast choice of glass pieces from decorative to vases to artwork. On the occasion that we visited, there was a guest doing some glasswork. She was incredibly friendly and helpful to answer many questions from me and my kids. read more

This place is unbelievable! We were warmly greeted by - - - two very feathery chickens. The clucked a welcome and I think they were trying to herd us toward the chicken food dispenser. We were also greeted by a very large chocolate lab. Wow! that set the "this place is quirky" stage. I was amazed by the huge output of glass work put out by this small operation. From little trinkets and jewelry to HUGE vases and bowls, everything was masterfully​ crafted. Most of the work was decorative, but there were some pieces that were functional. I really liked the book ends and paperweights. There were also a variety of glass vases, bowls, ​and plates that were designed for holding things. There were also some very intriguing​ art pieces that took the classic​ glass plate and deconstructed it. There were also arrangements of large bowls with balls and assorted glass and ceramic items. Prices seemed reasonable for handcrafted glasswork. No two items were alike so each one is a unique piece of art. They do have an online store for ordering and will ship items. HMMM. Would be a great source for a one-of-a-kind gift. The staff were friendly and answered questions. It looks like they do demonstrations which would be fun to watch. Looking forward to coming back on our next trip to Sutter Creek. read more

Controlled chaos can be a beautiful thing. That's what I found at Chaos Glassworks, or what I like to call "David Hopman's Wonder Emporium." It's a cozy, converted barn set back from the main street in Sutter Creek. Gorgeous, abstract glass creations populate every corner of the unique shop/store space. These aren't cheap pieces of art, but the price is justified when you consider the uniqueness of the craftsmanship. Best of all, Mr. Hopman himself can often be found hand blowing glass creations from wind chimes to paperweights in a corner glass oven. I am continually awed by his craftsmanship and amazing displays. He is happy to occasionally stop what he is doing and school visitors on his craft. If you're planning a visit, be sure to call ahead of time as his hours may vary. He is open for special appointments for serious buyers. read more

Dude, there's a frickin' pet chicken! That alone should be worth a stop for any sightseeing tour in Sutter Creek. My mom's a fan of this gallery and I can now say that I am too. She's a bit more excited about the large blown glass than I am, but I found a number of pieces that caught my eye. I was especially interested in their glass pumpkins and glass beads. We left the shop without making a purchase this time, but I'm still in love with the clown fish piece my mom purchased a few years ago and added to a necklace she made that I get complimented on all the time. Another cool tidbit about this open air art shop is that you can come in for demonstrations and classes. How cool is that!? Almost as cool as the chicken. read more

This place is a must-stop if you are heading through the foothills! Just don't miss the steep driveway. :) The art/glasswork is outstanding, and there are even a couple of chickens running through the gallery to make you feel at home! When I walk into this place I wish I were rich because there are so many things I want to buy. The glass work is both made and sold at this studio shop. Just some of what you will find is large plates, lots of bowls, paperweights, and incredible pendants in animal shapes that are very detailed and beautiful, some realistic and some that are fanciful. What a find! This is glass manufacturing and sales at it's best. The owners make all of their creations on-site and if you don't find exactly what you're looking for, they'll make it for you. David is a master glass-blower. I found a hanging lamp in his shop, but wanted one a little larger. He made it for me on-the-spot. I told Dave that it was "worth the price of admission just to see the look on my husband's face", while he was blowing the glass. Obviously, it doesn't cost anything to look; by the "price of admission", I was referring to what I was about to pay for the custom made lamp. You definately get what you pay for. The workmanship is top-notch. Go by for a look at all the beautiful work Dave and his wife, Heather, have on display. You'll be glad you did. read more

This is a fabulous place to learn about glass blowing and purchase beautiful pieces of art! My 8 year old boy and 10 year old girl were absolutely spellbound watching Heather make a piece of abstract art on one day and two days later, watching David make a small round vase. They liked it so much that they made us go back to get the first piece they saw made. The Hopmans were so happy to explain to my kids exactly what they were doing as they blew the glass and created the pieces. It was really a great experience for them! The pieces they make are truly beautiful and one-of-a-kind. They have a wide variety of colors and styles available. I highly recommend visiting them if you are in Sutter Creek. read more

This place is really cool! Bring your kids to come watch this guy make glass sculptures....and come feed their chicken. Yes they have a pet chicken that hangs out just like a dog or cat, but you should see the very unique things they have made. Very cool glass blowing shop in Sutter Creek. The atmosphere is slightly industrial, open air building with exposed frame and girders, and super cute pet chickens running around. Feed them and now you have new best friends. The artwork is simply amazing. From small glass figures and paper weights, to huge glass plates and hanging lamps. I regret not rating them previously. On our twice yearly visits to Sutter Creek, I always come in to see, touch, browse and buy. The Hopmans create amazing glass works that mesmerize the eye and fulfill the soul's need for meaningful beauty. It's magic to take basically sand, add color and create art. Each time I wonder in, I buy. Their glass makes amazing presents and where else can you find individual hand crafted pieces of alchemy for such a reasonable price? My fiancé and I stopped into chaos glass over the weekend. Not only did the owner not even say hi to us he had short answers to our questions. When I asked about using the bathroom he said he didn't have a public restroom which is understandable, and went on to say that the gas station doesn't have a bathroom either. He didn't have any suggestions he just went back to what he was doing. He had an apprentice working in the shop and I overheard a conversation about a person who wanted to pay him to make a glass light fixture for them and he was trying to talk them out of it so he didn't have to do it. He just seemed like a pompous asshole to me. Then when we left and said thank you he didn't say anything. He seemed like a pompous Ashlie to me. The guy at the gas station was nice enough to tell me about the public restroom at the nearby park. I will never go in there again. read more
