Chancellor hotel

Chancellor is an older hotel on union square, but inside it hides a hidden charm. A beautiful lady buddah sits on the check in desk and the lobby has an intimate small cocktail bar behind the check in desk. The people at the desk are very helpful and friendly and the rooms are crisp and clean with lots of fluffy pillows so you can rest after your long day is over. It's a must to try if you want something mysterious.

This is a solid budget hotel. The staff were friendly and accommodating for an early check in. They don't have a restaurant on premises, but I appreciated having free apples, coffee, water, and cookies. The oatmeal raisin ones were the best. The rooms were a bit dated, so it's not the type of place you would take your wife for an anniversary. Also, the bathroom is a bit small for my average male frame. The caveats aside, the room was relatively inexpensive, clean, and close to many restaurants and shops at Union Square. There's a Walgreens just next door. My room on the 3rd floor was quiet, which I appreciated. Parking was extra, but we found valet parking at the Marriott a block away for half the price.

I can't say enough good about this hotel. I just returned from a three nights stay there. I looked to find something amiss and I could not find anything. All of the amenities were there, it was super clean and I am very picky. I even called the general manager and told him personally how thankful I was for this wonderful hotel. Do yourself a favor and forget about all the hype at all the other places in Union Square and just stay here.

My wife and I recently returned to the Chancellor Hotel after 20 years. We were extremely excited to return. We arrived around 9:30 PM on a Friday night. Check-in was quick and easy. We had a room on the 14th floor facing Union Square. It was great being able to leave the window open each night and listening to the sounds from outside and the fresh air. We had a queen bed room. Hotel is over 100 years old so the rooms are not large. We did have a nice sized closet that was a walk-in and housed both of our suitcases. There was a small refrigerator too.Room was clean, bed was extremely comfortable and we had daily housekeeping while at the hotel. Chancellor has water, tea, coffee, and cookies all day. Alicia at the bar is amazing. Very friendly and knowledgeable. The hotel had a bottle of sparkling wine with an anniversary card waiting for us which was a nice treat. Location is fantastic in regards to mass transit and other key destinations. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and plan to on my next trip to San Francisco. This is a great hotel. Highly recommend.

SERVICE & TRANSITIONS -- great Staff were uniformly excellent in hospitality & concierge. The checkin flow has become much quicker since my last reservation . Public spaces are the epitome of clean with sharp attention to detail. Stairs were a nightmare unfortunately: steep, thin, tight stairwell. Stick to the elevator (in spite of its slowness). ROOM [Deluxe; Double]-- great https://youtu.be/0Rp8VYQZx0Q Remarkably clean featuring lots of amenities: functional windows, many outlets/adapters, umbrella, & dedicated workspace. This configuration was equally straightforward as the Double, with the addition of a large walk-in closet! Def worth the rate if on an extended stay. Pictures online were accurate & the dimensions work well for 1 but an intimate couple could also survive it . BED [Queen, Twin] -- good Their Queen mattresses were much better than the Twins. As far as bedding goes, A+ for everything: clean, lightly used, & soft. Specialty pillows provided enough support through the night & stack well. Satisfying sleep experience (when not in a Twin)*. BATH -- ok Small space with a cute aesthetic, thanks to the rubber duck . They don't slouch on cleanliness either. The shower & tub experiences were satisfying: great water pressure & temperatures. Theres just so many fixtures forced in here that it's cramped. The toilet installation especially wasn't comfortable. TV/ENT./ACTIVITIES -- good A 40" flatscreen smart TV with satellite programming. Not a fancy display by any means. It still gets the job done & works for drowning out convos from other rooms. WI-FI & CELL RECEPTION -- ok Free WiFi provided was unencrypted with fair speeds for a complementary tier. Cell reception was strong too. --Performance-- Video streaming - good Online gaming - good Video chatting - good --Nerd Stats-- 7-12 Mbps download 5-19 Mbps upload 0% packet loss 9 ms latency 19 ms jitter FOOD & DRINK -- good DoorDash friendly. A quaint bar operates beside the lobby, exclusively for beverage services. Despite the lack of a food offering, there's complimentary treats occasionally served in the lobby (e.g. cookies, fresh popcorn). For even more fun snacks, there's a nostalgia candy bowl in-room. in-room: microwave (mini) mini-fridge (medium) coffee/tea wet-bar mini-bar NOISE -- poor Conversations carry effortless between doors & walls. Not as bad as Axiom Hotel, but far from ideal. Some days were fine & others were insufferable. YMMV! LOCATION -- great An ideal property for touring the city on a budget or for a no-frills layover. Walkability is amazing & it's a safe space. RECOMMENDATION & RATING Final Price: $105.33/night Was it worth it? Yes Best part: cleanliness A very impressive privately owned hotel. It's seriously priced, dense with amenities, & if potential noise isn't a dealbreaker, it's the best on this block. I've booked this one numerous times & highly recommend it. 4.5/5

We had a great stay! The hotel is in a perfect location to everything. Right at union square. Easy to get all around. The staff were excellent, amenities were great. We stayed one night but would gladly stay longer our next visit. Mahalo from Hawai'i!

Our flight to SF was delayed from 11am to 10pm. We made it inside the lobby past 12am. Luckily the night manager was there to greet us and he was kind. The check-in process was smooth and we got 2 key cards for the room. I love that there's fresh lemon and ice water in the lobby. There are designated used and new cups for the water. Before the elevator, there's a station where you can make yourself coffee or tea and also a water station to fill up water bottles. There are 2 elevators and 1 staircase. The staircase is on the narrow side so beware when turning the corner. Had great sleep every night thanks to the fluffy pillow and the comfy bed. The room was warmer than I thought it would be in SF but that's just good insulation. There's a mini fan inside and a ceiling fan if you feel hot. The fridge was great for storing our leftover Little Sweet Winter Gourd drinks. The free wifi was much appreciated. The walk-in closet is big. I love the two luggage holders and the umbrella that you can borrow. If you take the umbrella, they will charge you but if you like it you can also purchase some umbrellas downstairs at the front desk. I was tempted to get one myself if I didn't have to check it in on the way home. We forgot to put the Do Not Disturb in for a day and when we came back the room was nice and tidy with all our things where they were originally. The bathroom is a little small but it's an old building. There was one night where there was a loud group of men partying in the room behind our bed on Friday. We could have called the front desk so not sure what would have happened. I guess that's a risk with any hotel on the weekend though. I don't hold it against the hotel. If I stayed in more I would have taken advantage of the Chancellor library on the floor before the lobby. I enjoyed my stay at the Chancellor and would come back in the future.

If you're looking for a place to stay in Union Square that's also center of the city, this is the place! I spent so much time looking for an affordable, safe place to stay while visiting SF and am so happy I found this one. They also don't charge a $35 per night destination fee like some hotels. The hotel is in a safe area. I always felt safe walking back to it at night from the bus stop. There was always plenty of people around at night. You don't have to worry about the noise from outside either. You don't hear any of it from your room. It was very peaceful and quiet for the most part. They have elevators which is nice but we were staying on the fourth floor so we just took the stairs unless we had our luggage. I LOVE that they have free water here! They offer free coffee, fruit infused water and they have a separate water filling station. I wish more hotels also had this. They also offer coffee and popcorn. We checked in at midnight due to our flight being delayed and there was still someone available to check us in. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Every time I would call to confirm our reservation or to let them know of our late arrival, they were always nice. They also have free Wi-Fi here. The hotel room is smaller than most which is expected for SF but I still think there was plenty of space. Our room had a walk-in closet that had enough space to change in. There was still enough room for a tv, dresser and desk. The room also had a an empty mini fridge. The restroom also had a full size tub/shower. The room was super clean. Housekeeping tidied up room and respected our belongings. Even though the hotel is old, the rooms were still really nice and had contemporary furniture. The pillows were SO FLUFFY. I'm tempted to buy the exact one for myself. I also liked that the restroom had a rubber ducky, cotton balls, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a hair dryer and shower caps. This hotel felt so cozy and was a nice place to rest after being out in the city all day. I would definitely stay here again the next time I'm in SF.

The best part of the experience here was Alicia in bar. She was terrific. Look forward to coming back sometime.

What a gem of a hotel! I am * so * happy we found this. We were already in the city and extended our stay (and needed to check out of where we were) -- so booked the Chancellor. I am definitely going to look into this hotel as our first choice on our next trip. 1) I love the fact that it's independently owned. I love unique properties that have character. 2) They have a great happy hour special and have popcorn available in the lobby during that time. 3) Cookies and apples also available in the lobby. 4) Rooms are well kept and clean. I love the old school big bathtubs. And the little Chancellor rubber ducky is adorable! You're in the heart of Union Square, which is super convenient. The cable car CAN be loud out front, but they do supply ear plugs. I personally love being right in the center of everything. The only thing that was a little frustrating: we arrived early and our room wasn't ready upon arrival. The woman at the front desk said she would call when it was. Well.. the call never came. We ended up going back to the hotel around 4:30 and yep, our room was ready. I guess that's my slight annoyance: if you say you're going to call, call. Nevertheless, HIGHLY recommend. Looking forward to staying here on our next trip next summer. 2022: 68/100

Location of this hotel is great! It's in the heart of union square so walking distance to a lot of great bars, restaurants, and shopping. They provide parking at a daily rate of $35. The room was a little old but it was clean and the bathroom had a lot of toiletries and bath salts which was nice.

Dear Shirley at reception, thanks for offering me all the insight, tricks and trades for visiting San Francisco prior to my arrival; with almost a month of planning and considering what should I do - you were there helpful, kind, and gracious with your time over the phone to guide me and get my first time visit ready for the stay. As an evening arrival I was welcomed with all the needs I requested ahead of time, storage for my medicine, top floor quiet room, extra pillow for the snooze time! Tracy at the front was so helpful, letting me know for the start of the day how to walk and maneuver through town if I started early. The bellman took my medicine and stored it safely away. LOVED the view and comfort of the room- WOW! The view is incredible, now for an original hotel 1914 , there is no AC in your room, they have fans, heater to plug in for your needs. The space AWESOME! This tub I can't wait to draw a bath and submerge the day away. They have a full bar 4-10pm come and say hi to Alicia so is fun and a mixologist of the finest! March 14-17th I found clear blue skies , soft winds and beautiful sunny days. This was a dream come true, with the cable car a few feet from the entrance to hop in and out. The chancellor is incredible- a historic gem and wonderful place to stay! Will tell everyone I know about this great place. Lyft / Uber ride is about 25-30 mins but that was coming in at 10pm

The check-in process was smooth. The front desk was very helpful in getting us in and filling out a card authorization form. We were surprised by the valet price however - $90 is definitely high. There is no self parking but the prices for the lots nearby are just as high, if not higher for overnight. We really enjoyed our room. It is definitely not the most spacious but felt quite luxurious. We booked a double queen room and were placed in Rm 920. There was limited walking space around the ends of the beds and desk. There was a beautiful view of the courtyard and city. I love that the room was very well-lit. There is ambient lighting and brighter lights you can turn on next to the beds. My friends and I loved the window that separated the bathroom from the sleeping space. It was quite comical and made getting ready for a night out very fun. There blinds for both the bathroom window and outside window were motorized which was a nice touch. The beds were pretty comfortable but nothing too special - I appreciate them having a bunch of pillows. The mini fridge and coffee bar felt pretty luxe and were much fancier than those are other hotels I've stayed at. There were plenty of outlets throughout the room and next to the beds. The whole vibe of the hotel feels very sleek and modern. The hallways are lit with a ambient blue. The inside of the elevators are themed which is super cute for pics. The gym is very nice too, loaded with more than your typical treadmill and elliptical. The lobby felt clean and had little robot things scooting around that apparently are used for room service. I would definitely stay here again so I can explore what I didn't get to see on my short stay!

They always remember that I love to have a tea kettle for my evening hot tea, So they have it sent to my room as soon as I arrive. I always get a king room and I've stayed on so many floors, The rooms are consistently clean and well maintained. I've never had a bad room experience in all of my stays. That has a lot to do with the amazing housekeeping crew. They come in daily to refresh and reset the room, So when I come in, the bed is made, the bathroom is refreshed everything is in place and reset. Not once have I ever had to ask for anything to be sent up to my room. It's all already taken care of. And let's talk about the breakfast setup! Because this is one of the best hotel breakfast I've ever had in my life. There's a hot bar with bacon, sausage and potatoes and eggs and it rotates daily. There's a yogurt bar with fresh fruit and even hard boiled eggs, there's always oatmeal with toppings. There's a center island filled with all of the carbs you can think of even tortillas. The bananas are always just ripe and that's rare. And there are two coffee stations one by the breakfast area and one by the front entry. I love the coffee! I really like the walkability of this hotel too! It's only a block from my office and very close to Oracle stadium as well as being close to the embarcadero walkway. I cannot say enough great things about this hotel and the crew. I love staying here and will always highly recommend this location. Tell them that I sent you! However, from the very beginning to end ranged from confusion, annoyance, to plain nightmare. The check in process was confusing and and cumbersome. I was given no check in information, and there was no front desk. The intercom at the front door did not even work, and I had to call their actual "front desk" who apparently said they did not have my information on file and made me go through these annoying steps just to find my hotel room key in a lock box. The most frustrating and nightmarish experience came the next day when I lost the hotel room key (a physical key). I called the "front desk" several times but received no answer then finally got one after about 10 minutes. When I told the man at the "front desk," he told that he would have to speak to the housekeeper. After waiting for another 10 minutes, he informed me that I would be getting fined $200 for the lost room key, which is plain ridiculous, since they didn't have a replacement key (other than the housekeeper's key). I understand a $25 or $50 fee for a lost key but $200 for a freaking key???! After waiting for about 40 minutes total, he finally walked over with my replacement key and begged me not to lose it since that would mean the housekeeper can't even get in (how laughable). What's worse was that the other guests were able to use their phone or a passcode to get in since all the room had e-locks. When I asked the man at the "front desk" why I needed a physical key, he said that not all of the e-locks were working--including the one for my room. What a load BS. A horribly dingy hotel that can't even get its most basic sh*t together. Stay at this incompetently run hotel at your own risk or better yet find much better options.

Amazing Service. Good Value. Butler Service…read more I came to the Bay Area for a relative's 80th birthday and booked The St. Regis because it was the only Forbes Five-Star rated hotel in San Francisco. I'm usually hesitant to stay at American hotel chains' "luxury products" because they often just feel like Marriotts with nicer tile (most new Ritz-Carltons, for example). I found the St. Regis to actually offer the kind of luxury service that is often missing in American hotels. I arrived fairly early, around 11:00 a.m., and the staff were incredibly friendly, accommodating both an early check-in and late check-out, along with a room upgrade. Prior to this stay, I didn't really understand the purpose of butler service, but they were kind enough to gift-wrap the presents for the birthday party I was attending while I booked a massage and walked around the city. The spa at the St. Regis is fairly large, with an indoor heated pool (well designed), a gender-separated steam room (out of order during my visit), and a sauna. I will say the spa could use an expansion or renovation. The "relaxation room" felt a bit like a repurposed salt room, and the men's lounge basically just had tea and snacks. The massage itself was great, and everyone there was extremely friendly. What really impressed me was the service. I casually asked whether they had bath salts available for use in my room, and within 30 minutes of leaving the spa, bath salts, bubble bath, and bottled water were delivered to my room without my needing to make a special request. Great attention to detail. I walked through the gym and it seemed large enough for a full circuit workout, with plenty of equipment. I do wish the hotel had more dedicated lobby or guest lounge areas. The check-in area, bar, and restaurant all seemed to blend together into one shared space, which felt fairly busy in the evening when non-guests came in for happy hour. The bar was nice but honestly expensive and not especially memorable. I was a bit surprised by some of the clientele (there were what I assumed to be a couple "working ladies" at the bar who I wonder if their services were less than the cost of breakfast in hindsight), though very friendly occasionally felt slightly out of sync with the otherwise polished atmosphere of the hotel. I didn't try the restaurant for dinner. The hotel does offer a complimentary car service around the local area, though unfortunately it was booked when I needed it. Breakfast was expensive, easily over $100 per person for a fairly normal order, but it was very tasty. The Eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked and included truffle, which was fantastic. The room was clean and comfortable. I do think it could have used a deeper scrub, though I admit my standards may be skewed by an exceptional housekeeper at home. There was also a slight musty odor. It was not on the level of a room at an average Belmond property or the former Mandarin Oriental Miami, but it was spacious and perfectly comfortable for one person. I'm not entirely sure whether St. Regis considers itself directly competitive with those brands. In summary, the service is what makes this hotel worthy of five stars. They seem genuinely happy to accommodate nearly anything you might need or even casually mention wanting. Personally, I find San Francisco itself dirty, stressful, expensive, and rough around the edges, so having a hotel that felt calm, polished, and attentive made a huge difference in my trip.

Sourdough muffin sandwich: If you want best value for price ($26), get this. It's seriously huge and filling. California croissant: This one is like an elevated avocado toast. It's really good. Price is $31. The mixed berry antioxidant smoothie is also meh. I can make a better smoothie at home. As part of The Edit they also give you $100 credit to use on food and drinks only at the hotel. It was SF restaurant week so we ordered the $90 3 course meal for dinner at the hotel restaurant Astra. We ordered the duck cannoli (ok tasting but the duck is cold), braised short rib (very good! Love the polenta) and the brussel sprouts (menu said it was gremoleta/garlic/parmesan flavor but it ended up being gochujang flavor and it was overly sauced). Was not a huge fan. The hotel is dog friendly. They give you a bed and bowl and treats. The pet fee is steep at $200 per stay. There is the Yerba Buena gardens across the street (5 minute walk) to take your dog out. The park is clean with lots of grass. This was one of the deciding factors of us picking this hotel because it's hard to find grass area in the city. They allowed me late check out at 5pm which is awesome!! Also, they have a chi hair dryer which is very powerful. The hotel used to be quite a few other properties, so while they may have decorated it, it's not the luxurious experience we've had at other hotels. The views are to die for, we had a room that spanned windows from Golden Gate to Bay Bridge, it was amazing being on the 45th floor and seeing the night sky and morning sunrise. The property doesn't really have a real lobby, spa, and the restaurant is average, as in the quality of the food was just not top notch, and they have access to the best ingredients. They only have two elevators and are quite slow, at a busy time this can be quite annoying. The room itself was small, no real furniture, would have been nice to have a sofa and table with two chairs. There was no dresser. The bathroom was great for one, but small for two. The shower didn't have a bench, no his or her's sinks. The bed when we got into it was super soft and not supportive, when we called they did something really odd and put a board on the mattress and then a topper. I guess they have a guest that asks for this. Why didn't the service people know they have a firm version of the mattress topper they could have switched for us. We didn't have the best sleep. Again, usually the Four Seasons beds are amazing. While this property doesn't charge regular Four Seasons prices, it also doesn't deliver the experience and it would be a shame if the brand started doing this.
