And they sell Lindt 70% cocoa chocolate, which I believe to be dairy-free, and was also an essential ingredient in the aforementioned recipe mission from hell! They also have a FREE cash machine! Then we came here last Sunday at about 5 o'clock and didn't get to leave til half past because of the ridiculously incompetent staff. We only wanted bread and milk, but were queuing for twenty minutes (I sh*t you not). There were two guys on the tills, and ever single transaction seemed to require the consultation of the other till person. It was amazing to watch. Sort of like car crash TV. Everyone in the queue was huffing and puffing and tutting and tapping their feet. Including me. And that, dear reader, is why I shall go to Bargain Booze instead in future.

Johal's is a proper old-school corner shop right in the heart of the Tinshill estate - it's the…read moresort of place that has existed, doing the right things for such a long time period that it becomes part of the environment. While few corner shops still offer penny sweets and retro classics such as Wham and Vimto Bars, Johal's has it all - box after box of jellied goodness and the sort of e-number heavy treats that you expect to be outlawed. They also do important everyday groceries, alcohol and a large selection of reject DVDs from yesteryear that no-one would admit to buying. If only there were more places like Johal's still in existence, the world would be a better place.

By this I mean it still realises the importance of good literature in a corner shop, and as such it stocks all manner of newspapers and magazine, a collection that would put most other modern newsagent's to shame. But, despite the evident joy the magazine stocking brings me, it is the confectionery selection that really seals the deal for me. They do those fizzy blue and red cola bottles that are just so hard to find these days, which means I find myself at Christalya's more often than not when I'm in need of sugar.
