Despite its unappetizing name we found De Tripas Corazon to be a refreshing change from the old-school local bars where we usually hang out. De Tripas was well lit, upbeat, trendy and fun. We would consider this to be an ideal date night spot. Located only a few steps away from the Temple of Diana we were concerned we would be overrun with tourists like ourselves but it soon became evident that was not the case. (Perhaps because it was 2230 and most English speaking tourists were already in bed.) They have a vast inventory of liquid libations and we took this opportunity to sample liquors unknown to us. Even though the bartender was slammed she took the time to guide us through our sampling and gave us recommendations (all in Spanish which made it even more adventurous for us). Our favorite was Legendario, a Cuban rum. It soon became our go-to nightcap for the rest of our trip. In retrospect our impression could have been influenced by the number of quaffs...so your number of stars may be vastly different however, we had a good time. If you wish to have food in the quieter upstairs dining room just let the bartender know and she will make the arrangements for you. If we were in Merida again you will be able to find us here.
Our new favorite rum. Ideal with coffee at the end of the day.

The food was pretty good - we loved our goat's cheese salad and the abanico de Iberico (rib) which was delicious, moist and cooked to perfection. We were treated to excellent service with the staff making excellent recommendations. They had a good wine list including many local wines and the food was well-portioned and very tasty (we recommend the octopus and the lamb). The prices were reasonable and the atmosphere certainly took into account of the Roman history as they had ruins built into their walls. We really enjoyed our visit and would recommend La Tahona to anyone visiting Merida. This restaurant was also rated as the #1 restaurant to eat in Merida on Trip Advisor.
