History
Established in 1889.
Chamberlain University traces its history to the Deaconess tradition of 19th-century Europe, the same tradition where Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, trained at a Deaconess facility in Germany before shaping her own nursing practice. In 1889, a St. Louis, Missouri pastor brought this Deaconess model to the United States to meet local healthcare needs, founding what became Deaconess School of Nursing and later Deaconess College of Nursing. In March 2005, Covista (NYSE: CVSA), a U.S.-based global education provider and member of the S&P MidCap 400, acquired the college and renamed it Chamberlain as part of the acquisition terms. The name comes from the Middle English chaumberlein, meaning chief steward, reflecting the nurse's role as the central coordinator of patient care. Today, that history shapes Chamberlain University's nursing and healthcare degree programs nationwide.
