Just two stories tall, it was built in 1969. Bradford County was renamed in December 1861 from New River County. It is named for Captain Richard G. Bradford, who was the first Confederate officer from Florida to die in the Civil War. He was killed on October 9, 1861 in the Battle of Santa Rosa Island near Pensacola. Matthews Bradford County Historical Museum (which was closed today). It was built in the Romanesque Revival style, characterized by the red brick exterior walls with limestone trim. It features a prominent clock tower, arched windows and a steep green-colored roof. It faces south and the south front has a projecting arched porch and dormer windows for the third floor. Located on a main highway between Jacksonville and Gainesville, the town of Starke (and…read moreneighboring Hamilton) has a well deserved reputation for being extremely aggressive in certain types of law enforcement. A very cogent argument can be made that a large part of the income of these sleepy little north Florida towns comes from issuing speeding tickets to 'out of towners.' (Cough cough SPEED TRAP cough.) Now I'm not condoning speeding, particularly in a residential area, but these folks have made speeding tickets a business. Speed limits go from 65 to 55 in the blink of an eye. The always waiting cops (and their radar) never blink. There is no 5 mph 'grace' speed. 56 mph gets you a ticket. Two stars because they probably have other duties, too. Beware, the towns of Waldo And Lawtey are equally notorious for fleecing travelers.
