I called in here with my husband for lunch last week (24/09/13) but we weren't very impressed, to…read moretell the truth. We sat in the nearly empty cafe upstairs and it seemed quite pleasant, with a view over the street. I didn't realise that there wasn't waitress service and a member of staff informed me rather brusquely that I had to order at the counter. Considering that we were sitting right next to the counter and she was just standing there, not to mention the fact that we were new customers, you'd think she might have taken our order anyway as we were only about five feet away! We then had a very long wait for a sandwich and a jacket potato, a coffee and a tea. At over £13 we thought it was overpriced, although I have to say it was nicely presented. The two young women who were working there that day were both offhand and could do with some lessons in how to make customers feel welcome. We did not and we shall try a different cafe the next time we're in Stonehaven.

One of the items was the Petticoat Tails - 3.45 for a package of two thick utterly gorgeous, perfectly crimped edges', shortbread petticoat tails. Liberally sprinkled with castor sugar --- and ... a hint of salt which I have always enjoyed in a shortbread. Some people don't use it - which I find lacking. This was TRUE, 100% uncomplicated shortbread, the way shortbread should taste. Definitely worth a visit! (Nice customer service as well).

They will butter your butteries or pancakes for you but I prefer mine plain as they don't always wear gloves and don't wash their hands between handling money and spreading. Their stovies are always good and come with an oatcake. They sell tomato sauce sachets to go with but no beetroot I'm afraid. I'm not a big fan of their soup as it always tastes like a cup a soup to me but I know others who enjoy it. Their sausage rolls are good both hot and cold and if they run out of hot food, they'll pop one in the micro for you which is good of them.
