It gets really busy with ramblers and cyclists but the atmosphere is really nice and happy. The staff are dead friendly and chatty. They serve a really nice pint of Harvey's in here and usually have the odd guest beer on the go. I had a fantastic roast beef for lunch, it didn't cost the earth and was so tender and juicy. Do beware though, you may have a bit of a wait on a sunny weekend day but I promise its worth every minute!

I have experienced both, hence a slightly average three star review... As others have mentioned, this is a beautiful traditional pub with crocked walls, wonky ceilings and lots of dark wood. It's situated in the beautiful village of Kingston, nestled right at the bottom of the Downs. It is your typical British country pub. As well as a bar and restaurant area inside, there is plenty of outdoor seating and a small playground around the back to keep the kiddies entertained. They are a Shepherd Neame pub so have all the typical ales plus a good selection of wines available by the glass. The food menu is pretty standard, but they do have a very extensive daily specials list with plenty of fresh fish dishes. I went for the chicken and chorizo skewers to starts, unfortunately the meat was quite dry but the Thai chili sauce served as an accompaniment was very tasty (although probably out of a bottle). For main course I had the dressed crab served with salad, bread and new potatoes, which to be quite honest was completely tasteless. The crab didn't appear to be that fresh, the salad needed a dressing (iceberg lettuce, really, can you not come up with something a little more exciting??), and the bread was one of those mass produced part-bake things you can pick up in any cheap supermarket. So disappointing. My friend seemed to fair better with her red snapper which she said was tasty. They redeemed themselves with the dessert menu. Although some were clearly bought in, it did feature a homemade banoffee pie and a lemon and lime ginger tart. Both were delicious and left us both needing to undo the top button on our jeans! I would definitely visit again, but maybe not for the evening menu.

Now it's just nice, having gone through several transformations on the food front, (first up and then back down-market). It's now settling back to more straightforward pub food (which we haven't yet sampled), and it still retains a good choice of real-ales. The staff seem friendly enough, but the atmosphere isn't quite what it was, with just the wrong sort of juke-box music in the background (to me, rock and historic pubs just don't gel). There are now regular gigs by live bands and other acts. Hopefully, it'll get back on its feet now that it has new landlords. It's situated on Lewes High Street, up St Anne's Hill away from the Castle area.

There is a great beer and ale selection on tap and the decor is proper good old old beams, floor boards and sturdy wooden tables. There is a dining area and they serve food at lunchtime and then again in the evening. The menu is pub food, but pub food done well and you will get a hearty portion for your pennies. There are also a number of live music events held on Thursday nights and a DJ plays away the Sunday blues from 4pm. I would recommend the roasts and a good way to feel like you have got out of Brighton and done something worthwhile with a Sunday. There is also a nice garden out back that shelters you from the high street traffic, if you are there on a good day. A very nice pub that ticks all the righht boxes.

There's a huge garden to accommodate large groups and there's plenty of room inside the place too. The staff and owners are really friendly and can't do enough to make you feel welcome. Food wise, I can't recommend the steaks enough here. They source the meat locally and you can tell the difference in the flavour. The Sirloins are fantastic and the chef really knows how to cook it to order (you'd be surprised how many don't. Perfect place to head to on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Located on the fringes of Hassocks and overlooking a beautiful stretch of Sussex countryside (great for a post Sunday roast walk to preserve the waistline!), the pub has the advantage of space that Brighton establishments sometimes lack. You would be hard pressed not to find a parking space and the same applies to seating within. The pub provides a cozy bar including a pool table if you fancy stopping by for a swift pint, the 'Keymer' bar for a more relaxed beverage and a large, yet homely dining area if you have come to eat. I will come back to the food in a minute. In the summer, the expansive secluded garden is perfect for children to bomb about, or for those summer nights when the weather is pleasant (of course, a bit hit and miss in this country!). The menu is wide ranging (check the website for a current list of dishes) and offers traditional, quality pub food. A lot of the produce is locally sourced and cooked to order. Sometimes this does mean that you wait a little longer for your meal, but the wait is worth it in such a nice environment. This is a great pub to consider for a Sunday roast, especially if you live in Brighton and have access to a car. They will happily take bookings and also cater for private parties in the dining area. I would have liked to see a wider range of ales on tap, but they do try and keep a local brew or two in rotation. Aside from that, expect your regular range of alcoholic tipples on offer. Many moons ago, in my youth we used to walk to the Thatched from Burgess Hill for our Friday drinking sessions and I would still make that walk! I guess the one negative is the location if you are without transport, but if you do make the pilgrimage from the station, I believe you will be glad that you did.

The Trevor Arms pub is at the other end of the village, just past the railway station (which has an hourly service to/from Lewes, Eastbourne and Brighton). A large Victorian building, the interior is very traditionally decorated, and very spacious - there are four rooms, including a restaurant area. It has a huge garden area, with tables and seating, as well as space for picnics, and is great for kids to run around and burn off their energy (as indeed they do). Beers include the usual Harveys range from nearby Lewes, and there's an extensive and very well regarded food menu, with the emphasis on traditional English pub grub, and there's also a special menu for children. The pub is especially popular with families, walkers (the South Down Long Distance path is a mile away) and, of course, visitors to Glyndebourne. On a week-end summer afternoon it can get very busy indeed. Deservedly popular. ************************** Photos uploaded 17-10-2007, after a very nice pint of Harvey's Sussex Bitter.

Landlord Assaults Women…read more Two female friends and I went into this pub for a drink on Friday December 1st 2023. I was posing for a picture with some inflatable penguins that were part of the Christmas decoration display. As I turned away, the landlord, a man in His mid-50s, kicked me hard in the backside. When I turned to ask him what he was doing, he told me he was the landlord and seemed proud to have kicked me. He did not apologise or seem at all sorry for kicking me. My friends and I left soon afterwards, feeling shaken. We genuinely were not expecting, having gone in for a drink and a little dance, for one of us to be kicked. We felt that if there had been a man in our group that this would not have happened. It felt misogynistic, it felt really odd and it absolutely ruined our night. We were not rowdy, drunk or destructive. The landlord seems unhinged: he is willing to physically assault paying customers. I can only wonder how long the pub will remind in his hands, as he behaves this way. Women, I advise you only go in here with a man. Or, probably best, don't go in at all. There are so many great and atmospheric pubs in Lewes, where women can go without the fear of being kicked. Avoid.

There's a large bar area at the front and similarly large room with pool table off this, and a smaller third room at the rear of the bar. There's a small outdoor patio area at the rear and a function room for hire upstairs. They serve Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter and Timothy Taylor Landlord, and at least one guest beer, and traditional real cider. They serve good pub grub: soup, a range of starters (£2.50-£3) sandwiches, filled baguettes, jacket potatoes, and around half a dozen mains with a veggie choice, for around £7. Despite being so large, the pub does get very busy, especially for major sports events. The clientele consists mainly of genial generally twenty-somethings.
