If you want to learn suicide first aid, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is the program to take. They do not mess around. This is an intensive, two day course that involves exposure to very personal disclosure from participants (who may have had thoughts of or attempted suicide), serious reflection of your own attitudes about suicide, education about current language used, appropriate intervention steps, etc. You even have to practice talking about it and engage in role play situations in front of a group.
This may sound scary and exhausting, but I promise you will be significantly more confident in your skills, know where you stand in your beliefs and be more prepared than you ever would have expected should you encounter an individual contemplating or attempting suicide.
I was mentally drained but walked out of there with amazing materials, resource info and a serious skills upgrade. read more
