Throw a rock near Culpeper, Virginia and you'll hit a landmark of Civil War significance. Thanks to…read morea non-profit that fights to preserve the country's earliest memories, Cedar Mountain Battlefield is a place for all to visit for free. Stopping by while at a nearby cabin, here's my experience: 1) Parking: Follow the signs to free parking near the visitor center. By the picnic table in the yard, you'll see a trailhead with maps and info on the battlefield. Follow the trails to find old gravestones and places where the battle took place. 2) Points of Interest: Markers along the trail talk about the significance of the battle. Confederate General Stonewall Jackson drew his sword during this battle for the only time during the Civil War. It was also his last battle led by him. 3) Amenities: There are benches along the trails looking out over the fields. Two cannons can be seen near one field with two outhouses nearby as the only restrooms on the grounds. It is worth noting that three historic markers put up by the Culpeper Calvary Museum clearly glorify the Confederacy over the Union. Even though erected almost 100 years ago, the fact that they remain standing shows the gap between an equitable society in this country.

There are historic gravesites, markers, and memorials. Today the site was quiet, with only 1 other hiking couple that after they left the visitor center parking, I didn't cross paths with them again. The caretaker was welcoming and engaged in lively conversation and recommended other nearby points of interest as well.

There's a cool barn with a merry-go-round outside and you'll find even more delightful and fanciful decor as you walk in the door! From floating seals, and zebra heads and giraffe statues, this colorful wonderland will have your imagination flowing! Every detail from the blue bar to the light fixtures, to the bicycle water cart, to the gorgeous wallpapers, pretty mirrors, animal leg sinks in the restroom, balloons and even the tile - every single piece was carefully crafted and arranged to spark your attention!! It's one of my favorite wineries in Virginia! The outdoor seating is not only roomy, but the views are spectacular! Pet friendly, for your furry friends! We became immersed in the festive vibe and ordered a flight of wines and a charcuterie board! The food was fabulous and beautifully presented! Heavenly! The wines were refreshing , and we particularly liked the rosé, the Cabernet Franc and the Petit Verdot. Don't miss this fun fun fun and fantastical winery! A fabulous time awaits!

The atmosphere is fun and creative -- both inside and outside. You know you are in for a treat when you walk through the front door with its eclectic decor. They have seating both inside in what feels like someone's really cool living room as well as outside on their patio or on their lawn. You can order wine by the flight to sample their offerings, as well as by the glass and bottle. I recommend doing a flight to determine what you like, then order some bottles to share or take home. Their lunch menu includes salad, soup, and sandwiches -- all with a creative touch -- as well as a children's menu. They also have delicious cake by Cake Bloom and Nightingale ice cream sandwiches. Merrie Mill certainly isn't boring! The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely include Merrie Mill on your next winery tour.

(1) as previously mentioned, I've challenged myself to read the top 100 books recommended by PBS. This time, I borrowed "The Joy Luck Club" and "Catcher in the Rye." I also picked up a book recommended by my daughter, "A Place for Us". (2) Some board books, mostly holiday-themed, for our granddaughter (age 1.5 years) who will be visiting soon. One exciting find was a book intended for juveniles titled "A Dog Named Haku: A Holiday Story from Nepal". (Her grandfather is Nepali). (3) Finally, and this is so cool. The library allows you to borrow what I'll refer to as learning toys from a "toy library". We borrowed two sets, one with a basket and a variety of plastic vegetables (corn, peppers, cucumber, corn, etc.) and the other with five large dinosaurs. I can't wait for her to play with these! (For the record, the library disinfected these between borrowers). The librarians are always welcoming and helpful.

It is in a nice new building that is shared with Albemarle County. There are county ESOL offices upstairs and the county warehouse downstairs. Have kids and want to go to the Virginia Discovery Museum? You can pick up free passes here. The same is true for Va State Parks. The State Park kit includes a backpack with educational activities for kids. Interested in sewing or embroidery? Northside has maker kits that can be checked out as well. One of the services that I use are their meeting rooms. You can check out meeting spaces for 2 hours at a time. They are enclosed spaces with up to 4 people. It has an exterior monitor for presentations with multiple inputs. Don't want to come inside, no worries... they have drive up window to pick up and drop off books. Don't want to do that either? They have a great digital library where you don't have to leave your couch. If you want it, Northside has it!
