The Central Market (Le marché central) in St. Helier, Jersey is an institution. It serves locals and tourists alike. This distinctive Victorian cast iron building was erected in 1883 and still bustles today with 36 market stalls. If you're heading out for a bike ride around the island, this is an excellent place to provision up. Or you can purchase your Jersey black butter here to take home as a souvenir. Of special interest to me was the Vienna Bakery inside the market. And of course the ice cream shop. Jersey ice cream is rich and creamy in the tradition of Philadelphia's famous ice cream. It is much richer and creamier than what you get on the European continent where a lighter gelato style predominates. Try it and you'll forget gelato.
The market is open Monday through Saturday but keep in mind that on Thursday afternoons by tradition, it is closed. read more
