She was given a great social, emotional and academic foundation for Kindergarten. We opted to go to the public school for Kindergarten. But, I have met many people who sent their kids to KR & K and loved it. I would recommend to practically everyone. Finally, it is a real bargain when it comes to tuition cost. We paid a considerably lower monthly fee than many other preschools in the area.

She had attended a great music program at the church and had similar high hopes for the school. The experience was fine for the first two classes. On the 3rd class the kids had a "substitute" teacher. The teacher had been told to give candy to all the kids and tell them it was from their normal teacher and that she missed them. The substitute used the candy as a reward for compliance instead. She made the kids sit with their heads down on the table and gave candy only to those that followed all the directions. Apparently, our daughter did not follow all the directions. When picked up she was upset and confused because she thought she was being bad (even though I don't think she really knew what was going on.) This is unacceptable for 3 year-olds just starting their school experience. Our daughter did not get candy and was very confused as to why not. She was still adapting to school and couldn't comprehend what the candy was for and why she didn't get any. Our daughter is normally very outgoing and isn't shy in the least. She's had no problem playing with friends, going to a music class and dancing by herself at dance class. After this incident she has had trouble sleeping. She was very clingy and upset when we tried to go to class the next day and we had to pull her from the school because of this incident. She regressed a bit in potty training having frequent accidents when she had been mostly accident free. We talked to both the teacher and the director of the school and they were apologetic that the situation was handled poorly as the teacher had not meant for the candy to be given selectively. Where they failed was maintaining that school policy be upheld and refusing to honor a refund of the tuition paid. Of $280 paid for the first and last month of school they will only refund $85. They used some crazy math and a notice policy to basically rip us off of the money we paid. I feel this is unacceptable since they created the problem as well as problems outside of school. I didn't receive service, the school created a problem (which they've admitted to and apologize for) and now they refuse to refund our tuition. I would steer clear of this school as there are other choices in Doylestown.

The Michener isn't huge, but it's a lovely museum. It's located inside a historic 19th century prison building, which sounds like it wouldn't be beautiful - but it is beautiful: stone walls, an arched entry, a courtyard. It's named for the novelist and Doylestown resident James A. Michener, who established the endowment for the museum and donated significant funds and some paintings from his private collection to the museum, which opened in 1988. As a regional art museum, it collects both historic and contemporary American works, with a focus on the art of the Delaware Valley. Its permanent collection includes nearly 4,000 artworks, including works by famous Pennsylvanian artists. I happen to love Wharton Esherick and George Nakashima and was thrilled to see their work in the museum! I wish we'd had more time so that I can could read for a bit in the Nakashima Reading Room - don't miss it. The museum also has a small outdoor sculpture garden, a small gift shop, and a little cafe if you need a coffee. And on top of all that, their staff are friendly and helpful AND they have great exhibits! We visited for an exhibit currently at the museum - "Anila Quayyum Agha: interwoven" (I had seen her work at a gallery in Houston about a decade ago and was thrilled to find another opportunity to see her work) - but really enjoyed their permanent collection as well. A small but charming and regional art museum with an impressive and unique permanent collection and great exhibits. Definitely check it out if you're in the area!

Built on the site of the inhumane Bucks County Jail, not only is the art museum diverse, the grounds are fascinating. Before entering, you'll see sculptures and an imposing stone wall -- the site of the last man hanged in Bucks County. Exhibits are on one beautifully-designed level. Most of the artists and/or subjects celebrate the creativity of the region: paintings, sculptures, works that could be called "installations." With the exception of the Mona Lisa (and a few other pieces) I'm not a fan of Renaissance or religious art. Works here span the 1800s to present -- a lot of contemporary -- which may be why I soaked in everything I saw. Doylestown isn't as well known as New Hope ... but, what a charming town with beautiful old homes and good shopping. After going through the museum -- it takes an hour or so -- you may want to walk to Main Street and enjoy a coffee or spot of lunch. We lucked out and inadvertently timed our visit on the same day as Doyletown's popular art show. A stellar afternoon!

However, she still needed to work on some of her fine motor skills. When we got there on the first day, she was EXPECTED to know how to hang up her own coat with a hanger in a closet. She was only four years old at the time, and had never done anything like that before. As the parent, I tried to show her what to do, so she would know how to hang it herself in the future. However, when I tried demonstrating, I got scolded by the teacher for showing her what to do! I let that slide, and she soon learned on how to hang her own coat etc. But, after that, the shenanigans continued on. My daughter complained that the two teachers yelled a lot, were not compassionate, and would not help her if she needed help with classwork. One time, they were doing a handwriting activity of some kind. My daughter did not understand the directions given in the book. Like any student, she decided to ask the teacher for help and to explain the directions so that she could do the assignment. The teacher yelled at her and told her to figure it out for herself, even though she had already tried to and was very confused! They told her she wasn't allowed to go out for recess until she had figured out what to do. My daughter eventually told me what had gone on and I decided to contact the school. The teachers told me that she might be "developmentally delayed" or even have special needs. Keep in mind, this was a 4 year old! This is all because she asked for directions on an assignment!! I am happy to say now, that she is going into her Junior year of High school taking all AP and Honors classes and does not have special needs. Every child learns at their own pace, and I thought that was what Montessori school promoted. I was sadly incorrect, especially about this preschool.

During my lunch hour, I felt it proper to finally give Buck's a chance. The property is quite large with an accommodating parking lot--the lot was quite packed, though luckily I was able to secure a parking space. I went in through front entrance and realized that this is not quite a restaurant in and of itself, but some kind of collective of facilities seemingly not unlike the YMCA. There were a lot of children moving around when I went into the building; it seemed like perhaps a school had brought their children here for a field trip. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to properly enjoy most of the facilities. I was impressed; near the entrance they boast a lecture hall, a set of restrooms neatly tucked away in a crevice, a lounge area, an indoor sports gymnasium, a membership/sign in booth, and what appeared to be a social services office. Beyond that, I noticed sets of public lockers just off the hallway, and series of offices in hallways dissecting the larger "avenues." I made my way to the integrated food establishment, fittingly called "Nourriture pour les Affamés." It featured semi-buffet style get-it-yourself service in an area aside the tables and chairs. I went into the area, picked up a serving tray, and picked out a chicken patty, an apple, and a box of chocolate milk. The cashier was quite rude, claiming that they wouldn't take my Discover card (just what do they think they're selling, drugs?), so I of course had to pay cash. I find myself a seat and began eating. The chicken patty was dry, lacking in any toppings or condiments whatsoever, the apple tasted like wet cardboard, and the milk was in a box. Disgusted, I knocked the remnants of my half-eaten quote unquote "food" onto the floor and attempted to exit the food establishment. Before I could even get close to the exit, a small, leathery woman began berating me about God-knows-what, something about privilege cards and detention and blah blah blah, all the while spewing saliva onto my person. I had no choice but to sit back down and wait for the bell before being allowed to leave.
