We were warmly greeted and the owner was friendly and very knowledgeable. He restored the winery/stagecoach stop himself (he even shared before pictures) and makes the wine himself from the old recipes from the area, and from the fruits of the area (except for the lemons, which come from Arizona). The wines were unique and very good. Prior to this, I had never had rhubarb wine or a wine made from multiflora roses. Both were heavenly, and neither of us tasted a wine there that we felt wasn't good. The building itself is very neat and has much of its original charm, including the original windows. There are a few nice outdoor seating areas and a nice garden, as well. Know before you go: This place only accepts cash or check. There is an ATM down the road in a local bar.

I told…read moreher I was from out of town as my son & I are here visiting William Penn college and that I would love to be better acquainted with their wines. She explained that some grapes are grown here in Iowa and the rest is brought in from elsewhere. They have a large selection of wine and a tasting allowed me to sample 5 along with a loaf of bread, cheese and dipping oil for $16. Of course I went with it! She was able to pour 3 whites (my preference) and 2 reds and brought an amazing display of cheese, oil and bread which was beyond tasty! The cheese is from a local spot down the road called Frisian farms and it was very good! The bread was warm and delicious also. I thoroughly enjoyed the wine choices and surprisingly my fav was a red called Iowa Pizzeria & pasta too. Maybe it's due to enjoying it with the warm bread and cheese. Who knows!?! This place is truly a gem, anyone visiting should check it out!

The tasting we had featured both reds and whites. Some I enjoyed, others weren't for me, but I was able to find great wines to take back for my husband and for my mother. The tasting was presented by one of the owners, and he had a vast knowledge of winemaking and also some great stories! I was not impressed by the labeling, but this seems to be very common among small local wineries. For me, the presentation of a wine bottle is important not only for gifting but when you are enjoying a bottle for yourself. The Vineyard also has a small gift shop with wine related items, some of which were rather unique. On the tour, I was surprised to see thick plastic containers for fermenting the wine rather than the traditional barrels. I learned more than I expected to about a process I know fairly well. Overall, this was a nice local vineyard with some good options. I can't say that I would necessarily drive there just to visit, but it's a nice stop on a ride through rural Iowa.
