It always sucks. This last trip, on our second day, we left after taking almost 3 hours for 6 holes. A ranger actually came up to us and explained how 2 groups ahead of us they were taking way too long to find lost balls. Why the @#%&# would he not insist that they limit their search time? We left after just those 6 holes. I love the courses, but I doubt I will ever play there again. Even on "good" days it's nearly 6 hours for as round. What a shame. I'm sure as long as they fill their tee sheets, they will never have their rangers do anything to speed up pace of play.

This was a Tuesday night in February, so we were able to get a very good price on a double queen suite. Room was clean, comfortable and no issues. We had planned to go skiing Tuesday evening but ended up at the pool with our kids. The main lodge has a decent size pool that starts indoors and continues outdoors. There is an indoor hot tub and an outdoor hot tub. Also there are two Saunas. The kids were enjoying themselves so much we didn't even get to go skiing! On Wednesday we got breakfast at the top of the hill. We have eaten here before and it's always been good. After breakfast we got our gear and headed to the slopes. Treetops isn't a huge hill, but for the value midweek and 3 lifts, it's was a great time. We got started right at 10am and skied until about 4pm before heading home. There was almost no traffic and it was non stop skiing. The kids loved it as well and really enjoyed the beginners terrain park they built.

We had four foursomes, with experienced golfers ranging in age from 10-77. The younger kids have all played for several years and follow proper etiquette, etc. We were given a tee time today, 45 minutes ahead of a league going out. One foursome in front of us was golfing a bit slowly. We were all golfing as quickly as possible to not hold up folks behind us. We even chose to NOT play two holes, in an effort to make sure the league wasn't held up. We were approached by the employee or owner of the course and asked to speed up. When we explained it was the foursome in front of us holding things up and told him we even skipped a few holes, we were treated with nothing but rudeness. We explained we had been coming here for years, we were told "I don't need your business." When one of us, a business owner himself asked the employee/owner what the goal of a business is, the person said, "to make money." It certainly isn't customer service! We will never return and hope the Yelp readers will heed our warning. Bad business management of tee times, blaming the customer, and rudeness are what you will receive at fairview Hills.

The Black and Blue tees are a real challenge, I think the Blacks play about 7,000 yards, Blues not far behind. The front nine is more open but long. The back has a lot of fun elevation changes and interesting holes, a bit more target golf. Taken together they are a nice complement to each other and a very interesting, enjoyable and pretty course. It was a beautiful early fall day with billowy white clouds set against brilliant blue skies. And very few golfers out midday on Wednesday, I never ran into anyone. All in all one of my favorite rounds ever, my thanks to the staff and grounds crew.

They also give you a round of golf with each night you stay and have a wonderful restaurant onsite. This was a great place to getaway from the city and recommend to all. They are also known for elk viewing ..which we havent tried yet..but if youre into elk..even more reason to come out this way!! Also- there is a lot of naturey stuff to do in the area..the biggest main city Alpena, is about 20 min away and its right on the lake. There are a lot of trails nearby, biking, swimming and kayaking.

TL/DR: Challenging beautiful course that is under-maintained from its original days -- but still…read moreperhaps inappropriately premium priced. Bring bug spray! This is an interesting and challenging golf course. I have played it several times since it opened ~25 years ago. Beautiful scenery, cut through the woods with some relatively playable holes, some target golf, and some links style holes. Carts mandatory -- this is not a course to even try to walk. Found the staff at the shop to be super friendly. BRING BUG SPRAY -- especially if you are playing in the early morning before the wind picks up. The woods are pretty generous in their donations of all manner of flying critters, and if it's calm they tend to swarm. It saddens me to say that the maintenance of the course appears to have fallen off since we last played. Several tee boxes were shoddy and a few were obviously unmowed, fairways were in rough shape in some places, bunkers weren't dragged in the morning so they were full of footprints and hard pack wet and difficult to play, and greens pockmarked with all manner of unrepaired ball marks. The last two are signs of inexperienced (or rude) golfers who aren't cleaning up after themselves...but for $90+ per round I'd hope that the crew would take better care of the course. Having played most of the nearby courses, I'd say that Red Hawk is absolutely worth playing at least once...and offer my hope that they keep the course in better shape. This course, bunkers, and greens were disappointing this time around...and there are a few other very nice and more attractively priced rounds of golf within a 30 minutes drive of East Tawas.
