I went in for a simple spark plug for my everyday toro power clear snow blower and as I left the shop attendant said..."good luck". I was wondering why he said that till I tried the spark plug and my engine wouldn't fire. Did some simple research and found that the plug he sold me was for a 2 cycle chainsaw type engine..NOT for a toro 2 cycle snow blower. Been going here forever for parts, and I'm now 84. I love this place because they don't put up with customers BS. It's fun to hang around and see how they are helpful for a person who knows nothing about anything mechanical, asking to get something repaired. Most of them want to learn and they listen to what the mechanic says. There is some cordial back and forth between the customer and the mechanic and the customer either gets it fixed or they don't. THEN, you have the hot short who comes in and wants something repaired, and he knows all about everything. Right off the bat he wants to argue with the mechanic and say that some other place told him there was a different problem. The mechanic gets fed up and asks why he didn't get it fixed with the other guy, but the hotshot said he didn't trust him. Mechanic just walks away and goes back to work. I would do the same thing, the guy is trouble no one needs. THEN you see the one who starts to complain about the hourly charge before the repair ticket is even filled out!! Well what did you expect, to get it for free. Or they EXPECT a discount for some reason or other. Well, you can ASK for one but no one OWES you one!! The problem here is not Cedar Small Engine ,but the customers with an attitude that the whole world should stop because THEY have a problem and should move to the head of the line. The arrow never points at themselves but everyone else. You always get back what you give So in ending I just want to give credit to the folks at Cedar because they have to put up with a lot of theses people and if you happen to be one of those that figure someone should bow down and give in to your whims, well don't go there. Cedar does great work and always has. If you maintain and clean your mower or whatever you have properly, you wouldn't hive to have any major repairs in the first place. Some TYL and an oil can makes a big difference. read more

I have attempted twice to have a Honda mower (mounting hardware for handle bars) repaired here. The first time they ordered the wrong hardware. Attempted to work with Cedar Small Engine to get the correct hardware (as the parts last Sadie there are 21 options) and brought my mower in so they could see exact handlebars I have. She informed me that new bars were only option. In addition, both times both employees (service and parts) were extremely rude. Honda Town is now my place. read more

Can you say, "assholes"? Or, "arrogant pricks"? I called today and asked if they worked on chainsaws. Prick Number One said, "We're the best in the business and I charge $95 an hour. Is your chainsaw worth it?" "It's an older John Deere," I said. Prick Number One said they don't work on John Deere. "We primarily work on Echo," said the head Prick. If Prick Number One really is the best in the business, he'd have known that ALL John Deere chainsaws and trimmers were made by Echo. When I gave him the model number, he said he had no way to cross reference the model number with Echo. If he was really the best, he'd learn how to use the Google. When I called back, Prick Number One's sister or mother (prob his mom) answered the phone. Told her that I needed to get a carb cleaned on an Echo 610 chainsaw. She put me on hold to look up the price of a NEW carburetor. Not a good listener, the mom. I wouldn't take a piece of torn paper into this place for repair. What a bunch of assholes. This place is a nightmare, I felt abused as a customer trying to give them money. STAY AWAY AND READ THE OTHER BAD REVIEWS I bought this Toro mower from them 5 years ago. Which after a year the bolts holding motor on the deck loosened and they made me pay for fixing back then. I was desperate to get it fixed which is where they want you as a customer. I went back for more abuse as they sold me a used recoil this May after I asked for a new one and insisted that this one was perfect. I discovered the rope was short when I got home it worked but then refused to start come August. Fast forward to today $40 down and over 3 weeks to look at it. I got a call from Mike the mechanic (no relation to the 80s band) and he tells me the coil is bad, has a oil leak and recoil rope is short and should be replaced total would be $240 for everything, I said I agree and would like a $10 credit for the used recoil I bought and the mower fixed. He then starts to argue with me and tells me his boss isn't going to pay for that credit and starts to tell me that the recoil is fine and just the rope needs to be replaced instead. I said can I speak with him? he said he's not here and asked him to start work on the mower, he says he can't do that because there is a dispute. I tell him don't worry about that as I'll work that out with the Manager. He says no I'm putting this on hold. I said this is the worst customer service and I'm done talking with him as I'm now upset. I tried calling back and spoke with another clown Derek (no relation to Eric Clapton and the Dominoes) and tell him that I want to talk with the manager on duty regarding a credit and he puts me back on hold and transfers me to knucklehead Mike. I hang up call back and get yet another tool who refuses to tell me his name and then I asked for the managers name and he says Eric Carlson. I asked what the owners name is and he says he's the owner. This morning comes and I get a call from another person (assuming he's the manager of the group of ex wanna be band members) and leaves a message that I can come pick up the mower and they will refund my $40. A brand new Toro mower costs $69 more and ensures not having to deal with repairs or this dysfunctional group. Fact - 80% of business comes from repeat business and I'll never repeat the same mistake twice with this place. read more

Not employees, not customers and when I asked the person helping she said didn't presume to know everyone's health background and that she herself had a health issue but put one on anyway as a courtesy to me, not because of the global pandemic, not because of the statewide mask mandate not because she may be spreading the virus. If you have a choice in where to purchase your snow blower, go anywhere but Cedar Small Engine (CSE). Otherwise, be prepared to face the consequences. Let me summarize my experience with them and after reading this, tell me if you would ever want to step foot in this store. Nov 6- I order a snow blower online from a big box retailer Nov 9- the snow blower is shipped from the manfacturer's location Nov 10 - snow blower arrives at Cedar Small Engine Here's where the trouble begins. 10 days after ordering the snow blower and no delivery at my house, I start to get concerned. I do online shipment tracking. Sure enough, the snow blower had been delivered to Cedar Small Engine 5 days earlier, but they hadn't called me yet to arrange delivery to my house. I decide to call them up and see what's going on. "Yeah, we've got your snow blower, but we can't deliver today becuase we got slammed with business from the snow storm yesterday. We'll try to get out to your house in the next couple of days - no promises." Huh? You sell and distribute snow blowers. Should a snow storm really catch you off guard? And if you don't have time to deliver snow blowers to people's houses, why did you agree to be a distributor for a big box retailer? OK. So I wait a few days and call back. "Yeah, we know we're behind but we'll be in your area on Tuesday next week. We'll call you when we're on our way." Sounds good, right? Tuesday arrives, by 6 p.m. they're not there and no phone call. WTF? I leave for Thanksgiving Tuesday night and am out of cell phone range. Saturday a.m. on my way home, I'm checking voice mails. Friday (day after Thanksgiving) "Yes, this is Cedar Small engine, we're at your house with the snow blower and no one seems to be home." You think?? I'm one of the millions of Americans who went out of town for Thanksgiving. And could you have called a day or two before to let me know you were finally coming out with the snow blower? FINALLY, on Saturday, I felt I had been tortured enough. I call them up and tell them I'm going to pick the thing up myself. So my Dad drives out from 45 mins away with his suburban and we drive the 30 mins to Cedar Small Engine. Are you ready for the best part of the story? We walk in. I kid you not - 4 guys standing at the counter, all working on a computer or paperwork, but no one doing brain surgery here. Not one person looks up or greets me when we walk in. I stand awkwardly at the counter for 15 seconds waiting for someone to acknowledge my presence. Finally someone looks up. I won't get into all of the details, but suffice it to say the guy was a complete jerk. Grumbled the entire time he was "helping us" load the snow blower into the suburban and filled to the brim with sarcasm, rudeness, and arrogance. The most ironic part - it snowed twice in the 3 weeks I waited for my snow blower! So, if you want to be treated like a child, demeaned, and cry in frustration at someone's ineptitude go to Cedar Small Engine. I've been in a few times over the last year for a chain saw, snow blower, and boat motor. They're a no- nonsense place that knows their business. The guy who helped me was patient with me and my complete lack of knowledge in any of that stuff. He showed me me the ins n outs of working with a chainsaw chain-- changed it for me, but showed me how to do it too. And if they can't fix it, they'll tell you why and help direct you to someone who can. That's just one example. I LOVE having a neighborhood place like this. They're small, they're local, they employ vets, they help me fix my things. :). read more

We've brought snowblowers here for years to get tune-ups. Our last snowblower had to be tuned up every single year or it was a pain to start. After a tune-up, it worked just fine. I purchased a new snow blower with an electric start this time. Despite being busy, they took the time to discuss the pluses and minuses of each model and brand. They are always helpful! They came out to my vehicle to unload the old one that I planned to trade in. I decided to keep it because they had so many used ones they were taking them only as a convenience. Then they helped me load up the old one again as well as the new one. Some of these comments make me think we are reviewing two different companies, but then I don't expect people to gush over me like like some flimflam man. read more

My father used these guys for years, I've been halfway tempted to go back because I bought a house nearby, but I remember all the problems with them. Months of holding onto snow blowers, only to find out they hadn't worked on them, but they would sell me a new one and take the other one on trade, a trade price which was offensive, seeing the blower was almost new, and only used one winter, it was also the top of the line with all the perks, really a pro-unite which was over kill for what we needed. Anyway, every time we used these guys it was a over promise and under deliver experience, we got to the point were we would make sure the damn things started before taking them home, and yes, they failed a handful of times. People, while there are very few options here for this kind of work, I's still not take it here, try a good fuel line cleaner, top off you oil, and sand the points on your spark plugs, your 100% more likely to have your item working from those efforts, than leaving it to the efforts of cedar Small engine and repair. If they aren't happy to have my business, or that of anyone else, I'd not want to burden them with my cash. Cedar Small Engine and Repair- How about you try under promising, and putting a smile on your face, and show some TLC towards customers after they have dropped off their units. While you've been in business for many years and perhaps think that nothing will bring down your house, the internet and upset customers can do just that, we are in the age of information, I'd suggest you start trying harder to keep customers. read more

My Disappeared HONDA lawn mower at Cedar Small Engine 6/25/21 Back in April 2021 I took my used HONDA lawn mower into Cedar Small Engine for a tune-up and blade sharpening. When I came back in May to pick it up employee Dave insisted that I had brought in a TORO lawn mower. He showed me paperwork that indicated a TORO lawn mower. When I insisted I knew I'd brought in a HONDA lawn mower he gas lighted that I might be demented. I doubt it; I'd just had a physical two days before. My housemate remembers using a HONDA lawnmower too. For me, the shenanigans suggest it was stolen because it's better than a TORO or it got wrecked in the shop and no one wants to take responsibility. As far as I'm concerned they affectively stole my HONDA lawn mower and gave me back something different, maybe inferior, then gas lighted me about it. The TORO starts on 8-14 pulls. It says on the machine it's guaranteed for 2-pulls. My HONDA started every time after just a few pulls. If you take you stuff there for repair first paint your mark on it and take pictures and numbers. Make sure you get back your machine. I don't know what to think. read more

I brought my mower in for a carb repair and tune up on May 5th 2010 and they said it would be 1.5 to 2 weeks for it to be fixed. I finally called on May 25th and the guy said it would be another week because they were backed up. And the kicker was he was a complete jerk about it before I could say anthing about it being longer than I was quoted. I finally picked up my mower yesterday... not even started after a month so it's still broken! And I'm out $50.00 to have a service mow my lawn twice! Never use this shop!! read more

I really wanted to have a good experience at Cedar Small Engine, despite being warned otherwise, because they're in my neighborhood. I'm really disappointed. I dropped my mower off to have a broken CCB shield replaced and the blades sharpened. I'm not a lawnmower mechanic, but even to me this looked like a fairly simple repair. I was told I'd hear from them in a "few days." I called 8 days later to check in and was told the mechanic had been out (seemingly unexpectedly) and they'd gotten behind. I was advised to check back in a few days. I gave them 4 more days before calling again. Still not done - the mower seems to be on the mechanic's bench but nobody who's there can ascertain if it's been worked on, if the part's been ordered, or when it will be done (because it's a Saturday). Call back on Monday, that's the best they can offer. The first guy I talked to quickly passed me off to a manager once I started to express my frustration. The manager barely listened to my concerns and mostly talked over me, telling me that he wasn't sure how they'd gotten behind, that he has no way of knowing what the status of my mower is, and that there's no way they have to time to call their customers whose work is running behind to give them an update. Then he told me he wasn't going to keep repeating himself to me and that I just need to call back on Monday. So: strike one for taking at least twice as long for my repair as originally estimated. Strike two for not being able to provide the service of notifying customers when repairs are taking so much longer than anticipated. And strike three for being unhelpful, unfriendly, and rude when I called to share my concern. You're out. read more

Had to return to Cedar as my snow blower did not work when I tried to use it. Two days to fix...so this is OK...$100.00 more...they fixed something that was working when I took it in ...but I will not nag on this as I can see that fixing one thing lead to another. However....Rude does not begin to describe the lady working at the front counter..If I needed to be treated the way she treated me because she could not get off the phone with a personal phone call after I waited in her eye site for over 10 minutes: Then they do not deserve my business or anyone else's I might be able to convince to go somewhere else. I've used these guys before; they're a bit far away (a place nearer to me closed up shop), and a bit expensive; I might have given them a 3 or 4 star rating. However, yesterday I did something really stupid--poured too much oil into my lawnmower (didn't have my glasses on and thought it was low!). Tried to start it--lots of smoke, then nothing. Then, I called Cedar Small Engine. A mechanic (or a male who was mechanically knowledgeable) answered the phone. I told him what happened; he said they were out three weeks (OMG, how am I going to cut my grass?!), and suggested that I simply tip the mower up and pour the extra oil out of the oil filler tube (no oil drain on these engines); and if the air filter was oily, replace it. I did as he suggested (it took me a while; I'm not very mechanically inclined!), and found that the air filter WAS oily. I drove to Cedar SE and bought a replacement for a couple of bucks. Then I went home, put the new air filter on, and pulled the rope. Presto! A lot of smoke from leftover oil, but it cleared away and the mower runs fine again! I am extremely grateful to the guy (whoever it was) who patiently explained this stuff on the phone so that I could fix it myself--and right away! read more

This place is a cast back to the good old days when competent people fixed fixable stuff and didn't charge an arm and a leg. I dropped my 30-year old Toro mower off for repair and tune up. $150 later it's like NEW! In this age of "green" it's delightful that my antique Toro didn't end up in the landfill. The only down side to Cedar repair is that they're closed on weekends. Small matter. Their competent kind skilled service makes up for it. read more

I have been a resident of SW Mpls for many years and usually enjoy supporting local business. I will not return to Cedar Small Engine. They under estimate the time it will take them to do repairs and then treat you very unfriendly when you call to inquire. The staff is not very welcoming when you enter their shop either. Waiting over 6 weeks for something estimated at 2 is not a very good business practice. We have other options in this neighborhood and I will seek them out next time. I've been going here for over 15 years. In all fairness, it's not their service department's fault if you buy a no-name machine at a big box store or can't be bothered to read your owner's manual! As for the front counter staff, I've always found them to be knowledgeable, friendly and patient. They make sure I buy the right machine for the right job, and can find parts that no one else will even talk to me about! I can"t say enough good things about them. The only negative experiences I've had have involved the crass owner, who's actually told me he doesn't need my business! I've been a frequent visitor to his store, and have yet to hear him talk to his salespeople without bullying or threatening them. I watched him twice step over an employee that had fainted without asking if she was okay or why she was on the floor. Yesterday was my last visit to them. While I was looking over used mowers for sale, their female mechanic was checking out a machine coming in for service. The owner took the machine from her and told the customer that she's not a mechanic, doesn't know what she's doing, and the customer will have to wait for one of the GUYS to look at it next week. When I got home I realized I didn't buy all the parts I needed, so I went back. When I walked up to the counter, the parts manager was trying to ring people up, but the owner was yelling in her face, "You're an ugly monster! An ugly, ugly monster! I hate you!" He was totally out of control - I don't know how she kept her poise. I was actually frightened for her! NOTHING gives a boss the right to talk to his help like that! All the employees' professionalism can't make up for the owner's ignorance. I'm not the only person that walked out without buying anything after witnessing that outburst. June 11, 2013 - FIND SOME ONE ELSE! They overcharge and pad their invoices. Went to pick up my lawn mower. It needed the blade sharpened and two drive sprockets removed. When I dropped it off, the woman and technician I spoke with, told me the repairs would be under the $40 deposit I put down. Upon pick up, I was gioven at $67 invoice. For a new blade and a simple mechanical work. Without my OK, (and I think to pad the bill) they REPLACED a blade that should have just been sharpened. Charged me for $4.50 for shop supplies and fuel oil disposal when I didn't even have an oil change. I asked about the discrepencies, but the guys working had no clue. I will never use Cedar Small Engine here again. Look elsewhere. read more

My experience is along the lines of the others here. I was told my mower would be fixed in 10 days. After 12 days I called to inquire and the person who answered the phoen told me it would be ready 'tomorrow.' I called back 2 days later and the guy sounded really annoyed and told me to call back at 11 AM. I called back at 11 AM and he said, "I TOLD you to call back at 11!" When I told him it WAS 11, he said he'd been working in the heat and to call back in another half hour. I called back 2 hours later and was then told that my engine had developed a new problem that hadn't been there in the original estimate - this would cost another 70 bucks. At this point I told them I would just pick up the mower and take it to another service. Ah, service. There's a word these people should look up in the dictionary. read more

I recently brought my snowblower in for repair. It wasn't starting even though it is only three years old and I had drained it of gasoline before storing it for the summer. I went here initially because it is a local shop and I always try to give my business to local small business. The clerk was very nice and explained the whole deal to me about the $40 non-refundable deposit and how it may take a few days to get to it since they were busy. I figured it was likely the carburetor and inquired on the price difference between a cleaning and a new one. I should have known I was in trouble when he evaded the question but I was already there so what to do, right? A few days later they call with an estimate for a carb replacement, spark plug, oil and labor costs. It came to $230 which for a $300 snowblower that is only three years old is a ridiculously high cost. I asked if the carb could simply by cleaned and serviced but they said no and I further inquired about the cost of labor. They gave me a breakdown of parts and labor time (2 hrs at $80/hr!). I had to decline their generous offer and I picked up the snowblower the next day. To make a long story shorter, I called around the Twin Cities and found a wonderful place in St. Paul on Snelling (It starts with an H and has the word hardware in it) whose mechanic was incredulous that another shop felt a new carb was appropriate for this job. They charged me $39.99 for a carb clean and service and it only took two hours from when I dropped it off to when I picked it up. Lesson learned and while it did cost me $40 to learn it, I'll make sure to spread the word about Cedar Small Engine. read more

Took my mower in for a new blade and installation; the guy at the counter helped me get it out of the car, and stopped what he'd be doing to finish the job while I was there. Great service; he even added gas to get it started, just to be sure it was working well and that the bent blade hadn't caused any other problems. Great service. read more

Worst customer service my husband and I have ever experienced. I know what you are thinking... Are these people those whiny customers who are difficult to deal with and who have unreasonable expectations? No. We always try to support the neighborhood business in our community, so after reading some poor reviews on Yelp and Google, we wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. We ordered a part for our snow blower and after being told it would arrive "in a day or two" for about a week, my husband called to speak with a service tech. He was told that he was wasting their time, he was the reason they can't get anything done, and that if she could go downstairs and "poop one out for him" she would. My husband called the following day to address how he was spoken to with another associate. After explaining how he was spoken to the previous day, he was cut off, told he was being rude, was told he didn't matter as a customer and that the associate "has forgotten more about customer service than [my husband] will ever know." The associate then hung up on my husband. We are both honestly in shock with how he was treated, not only as a customer, but simply has a human being. Both of us are experienced in customer service, myself in retail and my husband in food service and technical support. We understand the frustrations of dealing with unhappy customers, however I wouldn't treat any person, even a stranger I didn't care about, the way my husband was treated. read more

The staff are always really nice and helpful and the prices have always been reasonable. I own a few rental properties in the area and would have been hosed a few times if they were not around.
